Visible Invisible - sewing an artwork

It’s the month of art for me. In February and March, I have exhibitions upcoming and in Mai also. And after you all commented so supportive last week, I today dare to again write about a project I am working on. But other than the sculpture last week its still in its beginning and it cost me a lot of effort to write about this incomplete work: I am a ~~ bit of~~ perfectionist and it goes against me to present something completely out of context. But as I made some funny photos, I guess I can perhaps entertain you with this.

After this lamentation here it comes my first VISIBLE INVISIBLE dress.

pinterest steemit titelbild(32).jpg

I still work on the topic of visibility of (older) women, and I came up with an idea for an art installation which will consist of photographies, text, some digital paintings and as the main piece garish and absolutely not unobtrusive garments.
I started out with some keywords floating in my mind like cocoon, armour, softness, hiding in plain sight, warmth etc. And I then started out to browse my patterns and find a matching fabric. I ended up frankensteining designing a wide dress with ruffles and pointy shoulders made from soft neon pink fleece with a balaclava as a head piece. For me a completely obvious solution :-DDD But I feel that a tiny explanation why I made the dress as it is may be helpful. I will insert some making of and wear photos, but know that the dress is not planned to be worn but to be displayed in an exhibition, I only put it on to make you smile…

Kopie von Kopie von old neckline(4).jpg

For longer now I am obsessed with wide dresses (and wide skirts) For me they represent freedom of movement, being comfortable and being able to dress for nearly every weather from freezing cold to blistering sunshine. So, choosing a dress as a first VISIBLE INVISIBLE garment was a given. Wide dresses (in dark and muted colours) are furthermore often read as an garment to hide behind; to hide your body, to hide tools beneath it, to hide age or status.
These features of “invisibility” I enhanced buy sewing a balaclava as a head piece which can be put on and so can hide your facial features too. But on the other hand, especially this balaclava - tellingly in German it’s called “Sturmhaube” which can either refer to a garment for bad weather but also alludes to war - exaggerates the idea of hiding and alludes to face coverings worn during demonstrations which may be prone to violence. The balaclava often is used to hide one’s head while committing crimes or at least films and novels make me believe this. All in all, for me the balaclava adds a bit of brutality to the wide flowy and often feminine read dress.

Design ohne Titel(51).jpg

The next breach is the use of the fabric which is on the one hand super soft and warm and on the other hand is so garish and bright that you cannot be overlooked while wearing it (not sure the photos can show how bright it is in real life). Although being masked with the dress, the wearer is very visible. Together with the pointy shoulders - which are a feature often equated with power and masculinity, a feature often found on uniforms - the soft and cocooning dress gives opposing signals to the viewer: cheery, bright and soft but secretly an armour.

Be greedy buy everything(67).jpg

So far I am planning to sew some more of these VISIBLE INVISIBLE garments… not sure how fast I can work (sweating!!!!) as I also am working on the setup for the photos and the rest of the installation. I kind of feel the deadline breathing down my neck 😱

Thank youuuu… I just pondered if it fits so well because I had no pressure to sew a wearable garment and because the fabric was so cheap? Perhaps at other times I am so stressed out while using „better“ fabric that make mistakes. Either way, I am glad you like the idea
PS: to your answer about women and their perception on my last post. I found your answer super interesting and am amazed that there seem to be real differences between the countries (and yes, you answered exactly what I meant <3)

This suit looks like something I would wear on those cold winter days where nothing is enough to keep me warm. Incredible 💕. It amazes me how you finish projects so quickly, that's the ability to concentrate. Congratulations ♥ ️.

It is warm… really warm…. And I fear the fabric is full plastic as it was cheap. But I was drawn to this bright color :-D I guess the best of this dress is you could never get lost in the snow…
But believe me I am not fast, it is simply easier (and therefore faster) to sew with these thick fabrics I use. Sewing Dessous as you do is I guess one of the most complicated things as everything is tiny and delicate (and black :-DDD)

That looks a very comfortable dress and, doesn't it fit you perfectly? 😁
An interesting idea about disguising/illuminating. I love the pink fabric, is the dress pull on, or is there a back fastening? The balaclava is also an interesting idea, I notice that, after being out of sight for some forty years (slightly strange small boys with over-protective mothers wore balaclavas when I was in primary school), balaclavas are a big fashion trend this winter - also with knitwear designers:

Source - also PetiteKnits November Balaclava

I also love the pointy shoulders!

The dress on the form is far more forbidding than you wearing it. The ideas of something human but not human, intimated but not corporeal, is quite disturbing.

The dress is a pull on, no fastening, only good old stretchy fabric :-D I am so in love with my overlock, I only want to sew on her, so I try for stretch fabric only … ok and my fear of zippers may play a role too.
And with the balaclava, I also saw this fashion trend and it motivated me to explore this kind of garment in paintings and then I suddenly had this installation idea.
CC8FD9A0-BFC6-466D-83AC-46C86671AF7F.jpeg (one example of the new paintings)
I also think that the draped dress on the dressform looks way more weird and a bit distorted. So far I am not sure if I will present the garments on a dressform, on the wall or on a rope (the latter would be my preference, but I fear it wont be allowed).
The garments will be accompanied by a photo serial about taking selfies which are all b/w and refer to the idea that one only exist through the perception/recognition of the other. Playing with ideas of self-centredness and loosing the self in medial representation.
Both together , the garments and the photos, also were planned to visualise how much attention is a social award, that only the visible get attention and that attention (as a reward) is used as incentive to follow norms…. And again I am at the end of my English vocabulary :-DDDD
Back to knitting, I love the balaclava example you posted (I am currently knitting simpler versions as I want to get some of them done till 12th February)

Hello, @neumannsalva !
I also love my overlocker (serger), though it does struggle on thick fabrics.

I guess you don't have time to make a wirework mannequin to display your dress - the wire could be like the line drawings of your work.

Now you gave me ideas… I just dreamt of a kind of wicker woman. But honestly I still have not enough room to ensemble bigger and messier things.
And the idea with the wire is something for Silvi… she dreams for longer that someone gifts her a welding unit (no idea why we still have no rich patrons :-DDD)

With so much passion you will surely finish everything planned for the show on time. How nice that you managed to finish such a beautiful dress, besides the adorable color, the invisible dress looks great on you, so visible.

I'll keep my eyes open to see how your exhibition goes.

Hugs.

Am not a perfectionist but I try as much to make something of good quality.

I must confess that I love this dearly. The fabric, color, balaclava and just look at you in the dress like a beautiful doll.
This is very attractive.

And the concept behind the making of the dress, I love free flowing dress as well, I get a sense of freedom and comfort.

I wish you success with the preparations of your artwork and hope that you get to meet the deadline as well. 🌸🌼 🌼🌸💐

I simply love this dress and double layer.
❤❤❤💐

Sorry for answering so late. I am so happy you like the dress and color, I am already working on the next one (perhaps I will write about this tomorrow). Thank you for your well wishes for the exhibition, I really can use them: on the one hand I need to hurry to get everything done and on the other side we are hoping that we even can open the exhibition as covid is making (again) a lot of problems here.
