The fabric dyeing which ended in jam making

Last week I (nearly) finished sewing a coat dress with a Peter Pan collar. And as it seems to be my burden it turned out lovely…. And the burden being in this case that I made it from very cheap strangely coloured fabric. I somehow see a pattern here. When I use fabric, I love the garment does not fit and when I use fabric which looks like dried vomit or makes you dizzy because of its screaming colors or pattern, then… then the garment will fit. Not sure if this happens because I am stressed and fearful when working with nicer fabric and because of this make unnecessary mistakes? Did you have similar patterns when dressmaking? But who knows, perhaps it is simply by chance that this coat dress made from brownish-beige dirt colored fabric worked out nicely fit wise.

Last week I asked you if you would dye the coat, which would be a risk as some parts of the fabric are quite dark and fabric dye cannot lighten up the pre-existing colors, only make them darker. I pondered dyeing it completely brown or being adventurous and try out a lilac or red hue. But in the end boredom common sense won, and I dyed it black. And this was a perfect choice: happppppyyyyyy!

Be greedy buy everything(48).jpg

One feature of the fabric (before dyeing it) was that the right side looked completely different than the wrong side. So, the coat was grey/white inside and for me it looked unfinished. But after dyeing it black I am now blessed with both sides in the same color: a dark anthracite which in my eyes has a kind of vintage appearance. The huge blotches of different hues of brown are gone, but the anthracite is not completely uniform, which really like.

I already wore the coat although I still have not made the buttonholes :-DDDD But I already found a simply round black button which I like… and here comes the one problem that remains: I cannot find the rest of the fabric to try out the buttonholes. I have no clue where it is. There are more then 2 m of this fabric left, but somehow, they disappeared during our studio renovation. And I am not willing to destroy the lovely coat while making buttonholes before I tested how they hold in this strange stretchy denim like fabric… I hope I find the leftover fabric soon.

Excursion in jam making (quince and raspbery)

And now something completely different just to add a splash of color to this black in black post: I made a lot of jam in the last days. Our fruit harvest was abysmal this year. All apples had a kind of fungus because of the constant rain, no pears at all and one (yes, you read it right) one tiny plum. The only tree which had some fruits was the quince (but also less than a quarter of fruits than last year). This is only the second time I cooked with quince and for all who never held such fruit in their hands: they are like rocks. Harder than rocks. Quince are like diamonds :-DDDD We have the apple-quince variety which produces fruits which weigh sometimes up to 800 grams. Huge monsters of super tough fruits which smell intensely like a kind of orange blossom.
To dominate these fruits you need an axe or even better a chainsaw or you peel and cut for hours at night like me :-DDDD.

I used a new recipe from Jessica Koslow's cookbook sqirl which was kind of time consuming because you at first cook the peeled and cored quince and then cook the peel and cores in the same water to get all the pectin and flavour. After this the quince (not the peel and cores :-D) are blended with sugar, lemon juice, raspberries, and the cooking water (which is the jelling agent).

The color of this mix looks and smells super yummy but bubbles so crazy that I had to clean the kitchen several times during the process (and had to be careful not to get burned by the thick surgery mixture).

Today I tried the jam on a bread with cream cheese and yes, it’s so tasty. But next time I would use store bought pectin, because the jam is not getting as firm as I am used to.
Hope you excused my jam excursion, but I so loved the pink hue of it, I had to show you the photos ☺️

Great job for the fabric dyeing. I didn't know there is a product like the one used. Initially when I read the title, I thought you did fabric dyeing like jam making in a big pot. I must try once :)

And also great job for the jams until garden starts next spring. I like German jam making culture.

Yeeees jam making is the best. I love the smell of strawberries cooking in a big pot. Sadly this year I did not make strawberry jam, as there were not enough in the garden and to expensive at the market.
ANd with the fabric dye: I only dyed yarn in a pot so far. For garments I use this prepacked color for dyeing in the washing machine as I think it will hold its color longer (not sure if its right).

Thank you so much, I am also very excited that the dyeing worked so fine. Sadly its getting really cold here and soon the coat will not be warm enough.

huhuuuu @aswita thank you so much for your comment and the compliment…but :-DDD I am not sure if I maybe was not precise enough in my explanations: I dyed the coat with black fabric dye (its done in the washing machine or in a pot with hot water and added salt to fixate the color). THe jam making was completely unrelated … I only was so proud that I managed to cut the super hard fruits and transformed then into something eatable.

@neumannsalva I liked the black color! I never thought I could say this because black is not my favorite color, but you look great. On the other hand, how is it possible that 2 meters of fabric have disappeared, hahaha surely it was the Christmas elves I'm knitting, they are playing a joke on you!!!!

You must live in a totally cozy place, with plants, trees, raspberries, pears and apples...!!!! the jam looks delicious, I hope one day I will be able to try it!

Thank you for the compliment!!! I have a strange relation to black: I kind of love it on other people, I love black clothes and think it is very easy to look stylish in them. On the other hand, black feels so sad and boring if worn too often (in my view). And in knitting and sewing I am mostly tempted by colourful fabric and yarn… and then have no clue how to style the colourful garment :-DDDDD

And with the missing fabric… I hope your elves start to sew some lovely skirts from the fabric :-D (It’s still missing by the way, a total mystery)

The nature (as far as there is some, as I live in a huge industrial area) here is very lush, lots of plants are growing well. But this comes with a tiny drawback: the weather :-DDDD Its very humid here and therefore either cold and heat feel doubly cold and warm. In summer it feels as if we are always short before a huge thunderstorm and in winter the cold crawls into your clothes. But trees and flowers seem to love this :-)

I feel the same way about black, I think it's an elegant color for certain occasions, but on a daily basis it makes me personally sad.

Hahahaha my elves took the fabric for Santa's workshop, I'm sure they are making clothes to give as gifts.

Wow so cold and so hot. I live in a tropical area, it never gets too hot or too cold. We only have rainy seasons and dry seasons! For example right now it is raining everyday!!!!

Hi @neumannsalva,

I loved how the fabric dyeing turned out, the coat looks beautiful on you, the good thing is that you have a pattern that you can work on a more expensive fabric😉. Hopefully you get the fabrics so you can practice making the buttonholes.

On another note, I didn't know quince was so hard, thanks for sharing the recipe for the jam, it just makes me want to eat it.

Happy week.

Yes, yes yes exactly. I wanted to make this coat for so long now and I am soapy the pattern worked and resulted in a wearable well fitting garment. I already started the dress version. But after trying it on yesterday, I think I should have made it smaller in the body (I already cut away some centimetres from the shoulders). But it will also be very wearable … My plan is to sew this dress/coat so often till I am able to make the collar without hiccups alone :-D
And with the quince… I am not sure all varieties are so hard. We have an old apple-quince variety, but there are a lot of new breeds which even could be eaten raw (ours are horrible eaten raw and not healthy this way). Do you have some varieties of quince?

Here I have not seen quince, I will investigate if it exists in the markets, I will let you know the results of the search.

Hello Simone, the jacket was beautiful, no one would suspect that it had that batik color before. A really great result ❤️, luckily the dye did its job well. And the fruits, I'm very sorry about the bad harvest but at least you were able to make something sweet. I once tasted quince straight from the fruit, the most horrible thing I ever ate was like chewing on a piece of wood. They really do wonders when they transform it into delicious candy 😅😅😅.

Thank youuuu (and for your advice to use black dye) <3
Its only the second time I used quince in a recipe… you find these fruits fairly often in gardens but they are seldom sold in shops. So I only use them since we have them in our garden :-DDD I just wrote @jcrochet that I saw new varieties of quince in a garden center which are bred so that you can eat them raw. I think these new breeds are less hard and less bitter…
And yes to the candy, so strange that such a hard and woody fruit can taste so nice :-DDD

I love it !!!! that's all, I urgently buy tickets and fly to you for this jam 😀 of course it's a shame that this season turned out to be so unproductive in terms of other fruits

Ohhh thank you so much!!! I am constantly wearing the coat and hope the weather will not get colder soon because than the coat will be too thin. I am already making a dress with the similar pattern 😂
And with the quince jam: would love to let you taste it <3 Do you have quince recipes you like? I still have some in a bowl and do not want to make more jam.

it's only the end of October, maybe the warmth will last a little for you. unfortunately I hardly see quince here in Israel, so there are no recipes at all. Sorry. and we don't have quince jam here either (I'm crying)
