Sewing a fairy tale - the star-money dress

Its Monday again and I am writing about art again and perhaps I will do this every Monday until the exhibition is set up in February :-DDD But do not fear this weeks projects still looks like a „normal“ dress as I do not have enough fabric to transform it into the artwork I have in mind (by the way, after finishing with writing I have to hurry to the shop to buy the last bit of the fabric…)

Perhaps you remember last weeks pink fluffy dress with the balaclava? Today I am working on another one of these wide dresses (for the backstory of them hop to this post ) which will get a huge hat piece in order to transform the whole outfit - hopefully, if everything works out :-D. The dress I made this time is even wider than the last one and I again could not resist to put it on although its is planned to hang in a gallery not on a body.

I started with the same pattern I drafted for the pink dress but changed the armhole of the bodice to omit the folded statement sleeves I made the last time. Which sounded like an easy thing to do I my head, but, left me with some ugly folds between the bust and armhole. I know, I know, I will never wear this, but why not make a fitting dress, nevertheless. Because the armhole for the pink dress is halfway between a raglan construction and a normal set-in sleeve, I thought I should make the curve of the armhole deeper and take away some height of the armhole to have a tighter fight and slimmer sleeve. Work fabulous sleeve-wise. I am very pleased with the fit of neckline and sleeve, but sadly some folds at my bust appeared. My considerations are either the dress now needs a dart because the armhole is shorter, or the armhole is not deep enough or the fabric is simply clingy. Sigh… I really need someone to teach me fitting.

Be greedy buy everything(70).jpg

I grumbled about these folds for some minutes but then went on to draft the huuuuuge skirt part. While browsing through the internet I stumbled about a skirt with several gathered layers, and I thought this is a perfect way to add even more volume to it and to give it some interesting lines. I started with a tiny sketch on a paper and the idea seemed very doable. What I did not thought through is, that the amount of fabric for this skirt is massive and that every part of the process besides the real sewing must be done on the floor as I do not have a huge enough table for this. Lucky me we have enough free room on the floor, poor me as my knees hurt when I was finished with pattern making and cutting.

As you can see on my very unprofessional schematic, I designed the skirt with two layers. The top layer would have the full length in the middle and the get gradually shorter to the backside. The second layer would only be inserted at the short parts of the skirt (I know my written explanation is sh**, please look at the photos)

Kopie von Kopie von old neckline(5).jpg

First step was to cut out all parts. I then sewed the top layer. Next step was gathering the second layer and attaching it to the top layer. Next, I gathered the top layer (meanwhile working with I guess 200 kilo of fabric and appr. 20 m length… and nooooooo I am not exaggerating 🤣).
Last step was to attach the skirt part onto the bodice. Sigh… all went well without major hiccups although it was in times a real fight for my sewing machine because as you can see on the photos the gathered fabric was very crumpled and thick.

After finishing the dress, I was so happy and that I put it on immediately and forced my husband to take photos. Only afterwards I noticed I do not have enough fabric left to sew the much more important headpiece… yeah, me, good at planning. 😱

With this very technical post I leave you to your week (hopefully successful and healthy) and will run to the fabric market and buy the last piece of this mint-colored fleece. Cross your fingers it did not sold out.

I get wrinkles like that unless I alter my patterns for my sloping shoulders or I use shoulder pads. My shoulders are more slanted than a standard pattern. One of my daughters has square shoulders (almost a right angle to her neck) so I have to alter her pattern the opposite of mine.

(Edited)

I never considered the shoulders as the culprit as the fit looks good there other than my previous pattern which were always too wide at the shoulders. BUt I will research this, I think you gave me this tip before, but I did not look into it in my hurry to get things done (shame on my)

Ohh I love princess dresses and I think I wasted my chance to wear one when I turned 15 hahah. Maybe if one day I get married I'll have another chance (? 😂

It's admirable how you handle such large pieces of fabric, being on your knees on the floor drawing patterns and cutting must be very exhausting, and then having to put all the pieces together... I think to avoid all that I prefer small projects.

From here that project looks very good even to use, even if it is to be at home after the exhibition? Or else what will be its fate after that? It deserves to be used 😅.

Oh yes, such a dress in lace on you would look amazing 😍. Not sure if you should wait for the dress till your wedding... hmmm perhaps we need a new needleworkmonday challenge which gives you the justification to wear a princess dress.
ANd with the size of the fabric... I honestly pondered to try out the skirt design in a tiny scale at first, but then I just dived in and forced my machine to work through all these layers. Afterwards I had to open the sewing machine to clean tons of fluff away.
And with the dress, I will have three more exhibition afterwards in March, May and June. If the dress after these exhibitions is still ok, I perhaps will wear it (in Winter, as it is soooooo warm) 😆

I just finished the headpiece, now I dare to write about it :-DDD I made a kind of hat by sewing a zipper onto sleeves of a sweater. In this way it becoms a pointy head (hard to describe). I will write next monday about this <3 If you want to have a look before: I just put a photo on my website

Hopefully you can get the rest of the fabric you are missing.

I actually understood the pictures more than the text 🙃🙂 .

I think the dress looks to be worn, it's a very spring-like dress. How your sewing machine suffers, I imagine it suffers just like your knees.

I keep crossing my fingers that you get a chance to finish.

A big hug.

I got it 🎉 I am so happy... I phoned the shop and they could remember me (perhaps because nobody buys this fabric in this big amount) and they saaved the last meters of the mint fabric.
And I also hope that I can wear this dress later... but at first it will be in three exhibions and I am not sure if it will be in a good condition afterwards.

And your crossed fingers helped: I finished the headpiece today and will write about it on Monday <3

Its finally good to have some free to see what you have here.

Maybe you can rephrase your statement here.

We all really need someone to teach us fitting.

Most times am hooked up with several inconsistencies that makes me want to give up sewing.

Too bad we have to work on the floor and end up with aching knees and back, most times I wish for a working table too.

I love the color of the fabric, but often times I avoid working with thick fabrics like this especially when am adding extra fullness.
Everything becomes very thick and one has to struggle to sew on the machine.

You did an awesome job and am glad you made a design off your head rather can copying just any style.

I hope you got the needed fabric from the store.
Good luck with the rest of the work and eat well and stay safe.

Oh yes, the "floor-working" is not the best, especially for longer periods of time. I hope we will both get a nice big table someday (and a studio, this would be so wonderful).
And I feel you with the inconsistencies... I also am often disheartenend, but when I see your creations I am always flashed. Honestly you sew so well! I love the designs you chose and the patterns and color combinations. Really you are a wonderfull designer/seamstress <3 <3

ANd with the thickness of the fabric: I could not have done it with my "normal" sewing machine. You remember, I still have a rental machine as mine is broken. The machine they gave me as a substitution is so much better ... I hope the shop forgets I have it :-DDDD

And I had luck and could buy the last 2,30 m of the fabric. I even finished the headpiece tody and hopefully I will write about this on monday.
