Chijmes

CHIJMES is the acronym for - Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School. Pronounced as ‘Chimes’, the history of the building goes way back to the 1800s. So, the Chijmes building complex is historically and architecturally rich in history.

Through a series of restorations, preservation, renovations and uplift through the years, the building was finally restored again in 1996 for commercial use as a dining, shopping and entertainment center.

Although I have to pass the place on my way to town, I have never stopped to go in and have a look. From accounts of friends who had been there, the place is very posh, and restaurants are top ends. Since I do not desire to pay a lot for a meal, I didn’t bother to go and have a look.

However, recently, after a dinner outing, a friend suggested going to Chijmes. There was a ‘Canton pop’ lounge in Chijmes which he patronizes and likes. So, off we go to check out the lounge with a live-band. Unfortunately, they have a dress code. Another friend and I, who didn’t expect to go to Chijmes, were not appropriately dressed. So, we told our friend to go on and enjoy himself while we have a look around the place.

The place was buzzing with people. All the restaurants and watering holes were busy. And it was only a Wednesday evening. I wonder what the place would be like on a weekend. The compound was quite big and there were many sections. The architecture is beautiful. I think they did a good job with the restoration.

So, my friend and I wandered about the place for a bit, snapped some pictures and then left. Interesting place to visit and have a look, but I don’t think I will be going there to spend money. I expect most places would have a dress code and places that have a dress code are not for me.
