Eurasian Jay

The last day of 2021 was successful in terms of birding. We spend good quality time in local park and found plenty of birds. But today I will show you just one - the jay.

I saw it flying and the colour of tne wings draw my attention. I ran to see where it landed and here it was - more curious than afraid from me. Or perhaps the noise from shutter made it turn towards me.

If the colour of the wings were like the rest of the body, the bird can blend perfectly with the trees and branches. Even though it is big enough, the jay can stay unnoticed.

After these shots the jay decided to descent to the grass and it was so close, that I was ready for another burst of shots. And then, just like from nowhere, a little chihuahua came as a sudden and scared the bird. The jay took off as a jet and me again running after it, but alas, too high and too many twigs and branches hid it.

I am glad the jay is still hanging around. The first one I saw in the town, in the Sea Garden. It should not be rare and I don't know why in our local area it appeared just now, or better to say last year. But it was the first time I hear its call. Not very melodic. My hubby described it as a crow with a sore throat. Actually the jay is from the same family - Corvidae and like the rest of this family, the jay is intelegent bird, who can repeat certain sounds and even words. It would be interesting to hear that.

Another interesting fact I read about is that the jay alarms other birds with specific call about the possible danger.

Some describe the jay as shy bird, but for me it is rather curious. I hope I will have more encounters and more photos of it.

How interesting!
The jays arrived at my feeder on January 1. I was very happy. Today is January 8th. They arrive early in the morning and stay at the feeder all day. They scared away all the small birds. I'm no longer happy that they eat all the food!

They are bigger and they bully the small birds. They are clever though.
I don't know for sure, but I think the jay here is single.
