Deja de hacerte estas preguntas 5 years my ass.png

Where would you like to be in five years? Where do you see yourself?

I must say that these were the questions that I hated the most when I had to go to interviews for corporate positions in a company and let me tell you something they are the most:

  • Silly.
  • Cliché.
  • Basic.
  • Nonsense.
  • Without creativity.
  • The list is endless.

Basically, two questions that someone asked 50 years ago and everyone else followed, or that someone on their first day as a recruiter would ask.

But let's give it a chance, let's pretend that we are 23 years old, that we have just graduated, and that we are in that first interview for our first job as recent graduates of the university.

  • Interviewer: Where would you like to be in five years? Where do you see yourself?

  • Me: Well, that's an excellent question. Well, five years from now I see myself still in this company, probably in a management position. I am training the new talent that enters the company. I am married to a wonderful man, and I have a kid who is a gift from God, the light of my eyes.

Pause to laugh at myself for 15 seconds...

Let's be incredibly honest; can anyone really know where they are going to be in 5 years?

Now, let's just go back to 2020, and remember all the plans we had for that year.

Instead, let's go back even further and remember that 2020 was the year where you wanted to be in 5 years. Okay, did you get located?

Tell me, was 2020 your year? Was that the year you really wanted to be?
I'm almost 90% sure we're not.

So, how can we be sure of where we're going to be? We can plan, save all our money, even buy air tickets, book hotels, and give an initial for a house or a car.

But what the fuck are you going to do if: we get another pandemic? if you find out tomorrow that you're sick? that you have to leave everything to take care of a family member? what if you find out your partner cheating on you? or that your kid is sick?…

We cannot live the planned life in such distant futures, where we cannot control the events that are going to happen.

Why don't we live in the here and now?

Why are we thinking about the coffee we're going to have in five years in front of the Eiffel Tower instead of enjoying that coffee we can have today at the corner cafe with a friend?

Stop asking yourself these questions, and stop making plans.

Start living day by day, do what you feel you want to do today, talk to your family, go out with your friend, get a massage, go and get a haircut.

Stop planning and start living…

The problem I have with this type of questions is that everyone knows they are going to be asked those questions and they prepare a suitable answer the interviewer wants to hear. So why ask then, when you know you most likely get a fake answer.

I understand what you mean and I didn't think of that when I chose those questions. I am one who loves to live here and now and be thankful for what I have instead of wish I had. Just asked cause I think many have Dreams and wanted to know what they wished for. 😜 I dunno. Lol

No worries, my answer was referring strictly to interviewers, not to your challenge. 😃

Have a nice day Sara.

That is true, at some point I was brutally honest and said what I wrote in the post.
I am sure many people didn't like it but I thought if this company has a recluter asking this basic question this is not the right place for me.

Stop planning and start living 😉
I couldn’t said it better myself, to live in the moment and being Surrounded by people you love and places you feel at peace at is all we need. Mabye it was stupid questions and I didn't think about it like this. We all have Dreams and ambitions and its not impossible to achieve them.
We never know what tomorrow brings so living here and now is right but some kind of planning isn't all wrong.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I agree. Have a wonderful weekend. Cheers 🌸
