And the light went out: The Shining (1980)
Estoy casi segura de que con todo lo que voy a decir aquí, muchos me querrán caer encima, pero es algo que hasta tuve que preguntarles a varias personas: ¿qué tiene de especial este film?, ¿qué lo hace tan bueno? Me sorprendió saber que las respuestas no eran tan distintas a mi pensar. Se podría decir que, incluso, El Resplandor se convirtió en una película de culto; claro viniendo de una historia de Stephen King, ¡ustedes me dirán! Aunque realmente no sé si el director Stanley Kubrick estaría cómodo al dirigir una historia así, con todo y eso se aventuró, no obteniendo tan buenos resultados.
I'm pretty sure that with everything I'm going to say here, many will want to fall all over me, but it's something I even had to ask several people: what's so special about this film, what makes it so good? I was surprised to learn that the answers were not so different from what I thought. You could even say that The Shining became a cult film; of course coming from a Stephen King story, you tell me! Although I really don't know if director Stanley Kubrick would be comfortable directing such a story, yet he ventured in, not getting such good results.

Casualmente esa frase la mencionan en otro film que ya les conté (Ready Player One), justo haciendo mención sobre esta película, El Resplandor. Y no es mentira que el mismo King haya dicho en varias ocasiones que la película fue un total fiasco, ya que Kubrick no supo adaptar la historia, se saltó varios aspectos importantes, en fin… la crítica de King fue muy dura, como él mismo diría: “no tuvo ni pies ni cabeza”. Sentimiento que comparto.

Coincidentally that phrase is mentioned in another film that I already told you about (Ready Player One), just making mention about this film, The Shining. And it is no lie that King himself has said on several occasions that the film was a total fiasco, since Kubrick did not know how to adapt the story, skipped several important aspects, in short... King's criticism was very harsh, as he himself would say: "it had neither head nor tail". A sentiment I share.

Justo en este punto hablo desde mi ignorancia, porque simplemente no leí el libro, vi el film y me llevé el chasco. A pesar de las millones de críticas, la película tiene un gran número de adeptos que la glorifican como una de las obras maestras de Kubrick (aunque en lo personal, creo que tuvo mejores); y al mismo tiempo, tiene muchos detractores. Cual sea el caso, el punto es que estuvo, está y, quizás, El Resplandor seguirá estando en la boca del mundo. Ahora refiriéndonos a la escenografía, buscaron cuidar tanto los detalles, que realmente eran minuciosos y perfectos, pero descuidaron a los personajes.; me refiero a las posiciones de los actores ante los cambios de tomas, hubo muchísimos errores.

La historia como la presenta Kubrick (o King), tiene un inicio totalmente ambiguo. Un hotel que no trabaja en invierno y lo dejan al cuido de una familia, ya desde ahí es raro e incomprensible; el mantenimiento y resguardo de los espacios de semejante envergadura a solo dos personas, porque el niño no puede hacer nada más que buscar con qué distraerse. El detalle inicial del dueño que le dice a Jack que no entre a la habitación 237 y que los anteriores cuidadores se volvieron locos y murieron, lo vi absurdo. ¿Por qué decirle eso a alguien, que justamente también se quedará a cuidarte la parcela? y de paso ¿no le cuentas las razones? Mas absurdo fue Jack que hizo caso omiso y aceptó el trabajo. Lo otro, el niño extraño (en serio era rarito); tiene un súper don, “El Resplandor”, ¿de dónde lo sacó?, ¿por qué tiene visiones del hotel antes de saber que irán para allá?, más aún, ¿Por qué los padres no dicen nada del dichoso don? Sinceramente no tuvo sentido para mí.

The story as presented by Kubrick (or King), has a totally ambiguous beginning. A hotel that does not work in winter and is left in the care of a family, and from there it is already strange and incomprehensible; the maintenance and protection of the spaces of such size to only two people, because the child can do nothing but look for something to distract him. The initial detail of the owner telling Jack not to enter room 237 and that the previous caretakers went crazy and died, I found it absurd. Why tell that to someone who will also stay to take care of the plot? and by the way, don't you tell him the reasons? Even more absurd was Jack who ignored them and accepted the job. The other thing, the strange boy (he was really weird); he has a super gift, "The Shining", where did he get it from, why does he have visions of the hotel before knowing that they will go there, moreover, why don't the parents say anything about the gift? It honestly didn't make sense to me.

Sigo con mi cuestionamiento. Nunca explican el inicio de la historia tan tétrica del hotel. Por lo poco que entendí, el film está lleno de simbología masónica o de las grandes élites, podría concebir un poco del porqué pasa todo eso, pero aun así NO LO EXPLICAN. Tal vez fue por eso mismo, para ver si alguien más lo notaba, pero ¿y si no? Tampoco nos dicen cómo es que un escritor (que no nos cuentan tampoco sobre qué escribía) consigue un trabajo de cuidador de hotel, ¡no tiene nada que ver! Desesperación por el dinero, quizás, pero aun así tampoco lo explican.
More questions than answers.
I continue with my questioning. They never explain the beginning of the hotel's very spooky story. From what little I understood, the film is full of Masonic symbolism or of the great elites, I could conceive a little of why all that happens, but still they DON'T EXPLAIN IT. Maybe that's why, to see if anyone else noticed, but what if they didn't? They also don't tell us how a writer (they don't tell us what he was writing about either) gets a job as a hotel caretaker, it has nothing to do with it! Desperation for money, maybe, but even then they don't explain it either.
Desespero total.
Lo que sí no puedo negar, es el total desespero que me generó esta película, cumplió con la parte de “horror”. Lo lento de todo, lo ilógico de tantas cosas, pero, sobre todo, Wendy… esa tipa me tenía al borde del colapso. No sé si era falta de experiencia o si de verdad así era la personalidad del personaje, pero ¡qué mujer tan desesperante! No sé si Jack la maltrataba desde antes de estar en el hotel, pero esa sumisión atontada de verdad que no era normal (incluso para una película). ¡Ni se diga de las escenas donde buscaba escapar de Jack! Simplemente sube corriendo la escalera sin ver atrás, o ¿era muy difícil empujarlo? Ver cómo corría fue peor que cualquier película de terror de adolescentes, más bien era como si estuviera haciendo caminata rápida y tratando de imitar a un helicóptero con sus brazos. Sinceramente Wendy me desesperó desde el inicio, me cayó mal.
Por otro lado, tenemos a Dick, creo que era el encargado de que todo estuviera en orden con los empleados, tampoco lo explican muy bien. El punto es que el señor, realmente era muy buena gente, pero no tan inteligente; al momento de tener la visión (porque también tiene el don de El Resplandor) y sale a ayudar a Danny y a Wendy PERSONALMENTE. Señor, sabiendo que no hay teléfonos allá, están a mitad de la nada, hay un loco con un hacha corriendo por allá y por acá, ¿por qué no llamó a la policía? Un poquito de por favor. Podrá ser uno de los films con más escenas icónicas, pero solo se queda con eso: escenas.
Total desperation.
What I can't deny is the total despair that this movie generated in me, it fulfilled the "horror" part. The slowness of everything, the illogic of so many things, but, above all, Wendy... that girl had me on the verge of collapse. I don't know if it was lack of experience or if it was really the character's personality, but what a desperate woman! I don't know if Jack was mistreating her from before she was in the hotel, but that stunned submission really wasn't normal (even for a movie), let alone the scenes where she was trying to escape from Jack! He just runs up the stairs without looking back, or was it too hard to push him? Watching him run was worse than any teen horror movie, it was more like he was speed walking and trying to mimic a helicopter with his arms. Honestly Wendy made me despair from the start, I just didn't like her.
On the other hand, we have Dick, I think he was the one in charge of making sure everything was in order with the employees, they don't explain him very well either. The point is that the gentleman, really was very good people, but not so smart; at the moment he has the vision (because he also has the gift of The Shining) and he goes out to help Danny and Wendy PERSONALLY. Sir, knowing there are no phones out there, they're in the middle of nowhere, there's a crazy guy with an axe running around over there and over here, why didn't you call the police? A little bit of please. It may be one of the films with the most iconic scenes, but that's all it is: scenes.
A veces me gusta buscar información del libro luego que vi alguna película basada en él, y así comparo medianamente si se adaptó o no a la obra original, pero en este caso se me quitaron las ganas por completo. Sentí que perdí mi tiempo al verla, no quiero volver hacerlo buscando compararla con la novela, ya King me hizo el favor con su propia crítica. Lamento mucho si herí susceptibilidades, pero realmente es una historia muy mala y ambigua, mal desarrollo, malas actuaciones (menos la de Nicholson) … en fin, mal todo. No me pidan que la recomiende, primero porque quizás ya muchos la habrán visto, pero si todavía queda alguien que no lo haya hecho, no pierda su tiempo, no la vea. Así que esta vez, no haré mi cierre como siempre.
Sometimes I like to look for information about the book after I've seen a movie based on it, so I can compare it with the original work or not, but in this case I didn't feel like it at all. I felt I wasted my time watching it, I don't want to do it again looking to compare it with the novel, King already did me the favor with his own review. I'm sorry if I hurt susceptibilities, but it really is a very bad and ambiguous story, bad development, bad performances (except Nicholson's) ... in short, bad everything. Don't ask me to recommend it, first of all because maybe many will have already seen it, but if there is still someone who hasn't, don't waste your time, don't see it.
