"Trust Fall" es el título del segundo episodio de Lanterns, el cual está enfocado en la línea temporal del 2016, en donde Hal y John deben seguir lidiando con su relación de tutor y aprendiz, en el momento en que deben resolver el caso de por qué un alienígena decidió inmolarse en una estación policial antes de confirmar que su estancia en la Tierra era debido a una venganza. Esta fue una decisión acertada por los guionistas de la serie, ya que pone en pausa lo que considero que es el gran caso a resolver en la temporada.

"Trust Fall" is the title of the second episode of Lanterns, which focuses on the 2016 timeline, where Hal and John must continue to navigate their mentor-apprentice relationship while trying to solve the case of why an alien chose to blow himself up at a police station before confirming that his presence on Earth was motivated by revenge. This was a wise decision by the show’s writers, as it puts on hold what I consider to be the season’s main mystery.

El segundo episodio, posiblemente para algunos no generó el impacto que sí tuvo el primero; personalmente, pienso que fue muy acertado en su aporte a la narrativa y el lore de lo que ofrece el mundo donde habitan estos personajes; no tengo ninguna duda de que cada suceso fue sumamente importante para el desarrollo de sus protagonistas porque por primera vez los vemos tener escenas individuales, lo cual fue interesante porque de una manera u otra, generaron respuestas y misterio del caso que investigaron en la línea temporal del 2016. El hecho de que en un principio del episodio, Hal y John, tomen caminos diferentes en un tiempo breve fue interesante porque descubrimos algunos aspectos de Jordan y también nos vamos generando una idea de lo que puede lograr Stewart cuando sea su momento de ser un Linterna Verde.

The second episode may not have had the same impact on some viewers as the first did; personally, I think it made a very effective contribution to the narrative and the lore of the world these characters inhabit; I have no doubt that every event was extremely important for the development of the main characters because, for the first time, we see them in individual scenes—which was interesting because, in one way or another, they provided answers and added mystery to the case they were investigating in the 2016 timeline. The fact that, early in the episode, Hal and John briefly go their separate ways was interesting because we discovered some aspects of Jordan and also began to get a sense of what Stewart is capable of when his time comes to become a Green Lantern.

En este segundo episodio, con un ritmo muy fluido, lo cual hizo ver que fuese corto, presentó un nivel adecuado de misterio, acción y una carga de humor que no se presenció tanto en el primer episodio; justamente ese humor provino en su mayoría por parte del personaje de Hal, que necesitó de su encanto para poder ir descubriendo ciertas pistas que pueden acercarlo a una resolución de un caso que puede estar muy ligado a lo que fue la elección de Jordan como Linterna. En ese aspecto, me pareció genial que este episodio pueda usar la investigación para suavizar la historia, no restando el factor adulto o haciéndola infantil, sino para hacerla entretenida por la inclusión de escenas de acción y, como señalé anteriormente, escenas de humor.

In this second episode, which had a very smooth pace—making it feel short—there was just the right amount of mystery, action, and a dose of humor that wasn’t as prominent in the first episode; that humor came mostly from Hal’s character, who had to rely on his charm to uncover certain clues that might bring him closer to solving a case that may be closely tied to Jordan’s selection as a Green Lantern. In that regard, I thought it was great that this episode used the investigation to lighten the story—not by toning down the mature elements or making it childish, but by making it entertaining through the inclusion of action scenes and, as I mentioned earlier, humorous moments.

Hay un tema muy importante en Trust Fall y es con respecto a la relación entre Hal y John, como tutor y aprendiz, lo cual es demostrado como una competencia entre ambos en donde primeramente existe la imposición de rango por parte de Hal para después ser sorprendido por el poder de Hal en generar una proyección por un largo tiempo sin la necesidad de portar el anillo; ambas experiencias o la manera de entrenar y usar lo aprendido genera más misterios a esta historia, y nos provee una idea de como será la relación entre un experimentado Linterna Verde y un joven hombre que parece descubrir o saber cuál es su potencial y sentir que está siendo retraído por alguien que posiblemente no sea digno de portar el anillo; esa idea se me hace más que fascinante y por supuesto me genera muchas expectativas porque eso puede estar muy relacionado con el futuro de la historia. Como pensamiento final con respecto a mi opinión sobre este segundo episodio, creo que fue un perfecto complemento y seguramente habrá episodios iguales, y prefiero no referirme a esos episodios como de relleno porque aporta muchas cosas, tiene un fanservice adecuado y, aunque no tenga un cliffhanger tan impactante como en el anterior, de igual manera ofrece una parte importante de la historia de Hal Jordan.

There is a very important theme in Trust Fall, and it concerns the relationship between Hal and John—as mentor and apprentice—which is portrayed as a competition between the two, where Hal initially imposes his authority, only to be later surprised by Hal’s ability to maintain a projection for an extended period without needing to wear the ring; Both of these experiences—as well as the methods of training and applying what’s been learned—add more mystery to this story and give us a glimpse of what the relationship between an experienced Green Lantern and a young man might be like. This young man seems to be discovering or realizing his potential, yet feels held back by someone who may not be worthy of wearing the ring; I find that idea absolutely fascinating, and of course it raises my expectations, as it may be closely tied to the story’s future. As a final thought regarding my opinion on this second episode, I think it was a perfect complement, and there will surely be similar episodes. I prefer not to refer to those episodes as “filler” because they contribute a lot, have just the right amount of fan service, and—even if they don’t have a cliffhanger as impactful as the previous one—they still offer an important part of Hal Jordan’s story.
