The Card Counter - Film Review [ESP/ENG]
El camino a la redención nunca ha sido fácil y más cuando el pasado siempre está presente... "The Card Counter"
Desde hace un tiempo he practicado algo con respecto a algunas películas que quiero ver, eso es alejarme de ver trailers y de extensas sinopsis, algunas veces solo veo un póster promocional y si despierta algún interés, entonces queda marcada para verla y así saber si es o no un buen film; no tengo ningún específico género para realizar esta práctica, aunque prefiero hacerlo con películas que no sean para las grandes masas, prefiero hacerla con historias que están lejos de lo que consume un gran número de público, ya que pienso que la mayoría de veces este tipo de films sorprenden aún más con historias crudas, reales que crean un verdadero impacto en quien las ve, justamente en esta semana estaré realizando reseñas de películas en las cuales e poco de sus historias a pesar de contar con personalidades muy reconocidas en el mundo del cine.

For a while now I have been practicing something regarding some movies I want to see, that is to stay away from watching trailers and lengthy synopses, sometimes I just see a promotional poster and if it sparks some interest, then it is marked to watch it so I know whether or not it is a good film; I have no specific genre to do this practice, although I prefer to do it with films that are not for the masses, I prefer to do it with stories that are far from what consumes a large number of public, as I think that most of the time these films surprise even more with raw, real stories that create a real impact on those who see them, just this week I will be doing reviews of films in which e little of their stories despite having very recognized personalities in the world of moivies.
En "The Card Counter" veremos la historia de "William Tell", un hombre quien ha cambiado su vida jugando cartas después de estar preso en una cárcel militar por más de ocho años; Tell es un hombre reservado, solitario, sin ninguna ambición en la vida, solo juega para ganar pequeños montos de dinero usando la táctica de contar cartas, pero un día el pasado, su verdadero pasado se presenta ante él con una oferta que no sabe si puede rechazar, una que cambiará su rutina extraña, una que lo ha mantenido a salvo por mucho tiempo.
In "The Card Counter" we will see the story of "William Tell", a man who has changed his life playing cards after being a prisoner in a military jail for more than eight years; Tell is a reserved man, lonely, without any ambition in life, he only plays to win small amounts of money using the tactic of counting cards, but one day the past, his real past presents itself to him with an offer he does not know if he can refuse, one that will change his strange routine, one that has kept him safe for a long time.
Esta película es dirigida y escrita por Paul Schrader, este guionista y director tiene un largo trayecto en el cine, escribió el guion para uno de los clásicos del cine como es Taxi Driver, también escribió el guion y dirección de "First Reformed", ambas historias protagonizadas por hombres que utilizan lo moral, afectados de alguna forma por sus creencias y el querer hacer algún bien desde su punto de vista, en esta película este tipo de historia no se aleja de las antes mencionadas, en esta película, la historia de alguien que siguió adelante con su vida después de estar en prisión, pero en realidad es alguien que no es del todo libre, es preso de una vida llena de rutinas, para no pensar en quien realidad es, en quien lo convirtieron; Schrader creó una historia llena de soledad, extraña redención, olvidó, pero en especial una historia en dónde no existe el perdón.
La dirección es excelente, es pulcra por definirla de alguna manera, me gustó cada toma tanto en los casinos como en alguna escena dentro de un bar o en una habitación de algún hotel, son muy íntimas, directas, en algún momento pareciera que pudiera suceder algo que rompe con tanta tranquilidad y concentración que hay en cada toma; la fotografía es muy buena y hay momentos que me hizo recordar a trabajos hechos por el director danés, Nicolas Winding Refn, tal vez estén mismo director ha tenido influencia de algún trabajo hecho por Schrader en el pasado; en mi humilde opinión la dirección, la pausa de cada toma, junto a la música es perfecta, disfrute mucho de esta película.
This film is directed and written by Paul Schrader, this screenwriter and director has a long trajectory in cinema, he wrote the script for one of the classics of cinema such as Taxi Driver, he also wrote the script and directed "First Reformed", both stories starring men who use the moral, affected in some way by their beliefs and wanting to do some good from their point of view, in this movie this kind of story is not far from the ones mentioned before, in this movie, the story of someone who went ahead with his life after being in prison, but in reality he is someone who is not entirely free, he is a prisoner of a life full of routines, not to think about who he really is, who they turned him into. Schrader created a story full of loneliness, strange redemption, forgetfulness, but especially a story where there is no forgiveness.
The direction is excellent, it is neat to define it somehow, I liked every shot both in the casinos and in a scene inside a bar or in a hotel room, they are very intimate, direct, at some point it seems that something could happen that breaks with so much tranquility and concentration that is in every shot; the photography is very good and there are moments that reminded me of works made by the Danish director, Nicolas Winding Refn, maybe this same director has been influenced by some work made by Schrader in the past; in my humble opinion the direction, the pause of each shot, together with the music is perfect, I enjoyed this film very much.
Sin ninguna duda de que Oscar Isaac es la estrella de este film, su actuación es impresionante, la interpretación de "William Tell" es muy buena, un hombre completamente roto, pero que no demuestra ninguna falla, alguien que dejó hace mucho tiempo de ser quién en realidad es y se convirtió en un animal dependiente de rutinas, sin importar que tan malas sean, alguien que cree que tiene la voluntad de decirle a otros que deben hacer con sus vidas cuando él está a un simple paso de revelar todo lo que ha aprendido de su pasado, es una gran actuación, una gran representación.
Without any doubt that Oscar Isaac is the star of this film, his performance is impressive, the interpretation of "William Tell" is very good, a completely broken man, but who shows no flaws, someone who long ago stopped being who he really is and became an animal dependent on routines, no matter how bad they are, someone who believes he has the will to tell others what they should do with their lives when he is just a simple step away from revealing everything he has learned from his past, it is a great performance, a great representation.
The Card Counter es un film directo, rápido, no trata de esconder nada y eso es algo que me agrado mucho, tiene la intención de mostrar cómo alguien sin ninguna ayuda, alguien triste y solo querer dar un paso nuevo en una vida rutinaria, sin embargo, se da cuenta de que nada es fácil y menos con alguien que vivió y creó traumas; está es una de las mejores películas que he visto en este año, es realmente muy buena, no pienso que tenga un recibimiento multitudinario aunque si llega a ser reconocida al recibir nominaciones en los premios del cine, seguramente obtendrá nuevos seguidores que podrán admirar el trabajo de este director, guionista y del protagonista de este film.
The Card Counter is a direct film, fast, it doesn't try to hide anything and that's something I really liked, it has the intention to show how someone without any help, someone sad and just wanting to take a new step in a routine life, however, realizes that nothing is easy and less with someone who lived and created traumas; this is one of the best films I have seen this year, it is really very good, I do not think it will have a massive reception although if it gets to be recognized by receiving nominations in the film awards, it will surely get new followers who will admire the work of this director, screenwriter and the protagonist of this film.

Good review. I was going to see this movie last week, and didn't because I had to do something else, but I will see it soon.

Qué curioso que nunca había oído nada de esta película, pero justo hace unos días la tenían puesta en la sala de espera donde me encontraba. La película iba terminando así que no pude saber más de ella, y como sólo estaba puesta allí, tampoco pude saber el título. Creí que pasaría un tiempo hasta que supiera algo más de ella y casualmente veo ahora tu post ¡Gracias por eso!
La película se ve interesante con todo lo que mencionas, intentaré verla cuando tenga oportunidad.
Es un interesante film, buena historia que al principio puede ser algo lenta, pero antes que termine su primera hora tiene un ritmo muy rápido hasta su desenlace, espero que cuando la vea sea de su gusto.
El trasfondo psicológico del personaje fue algo que encontré interesante pero esa decisión final que toma en medio de la gran partida la encontré un poco chocante. La historia está completamente condicionada por no solo los traumas del personaje principal, sino también del muchacho que él busca ayudar y básicamente fue traumas de unas personas creando nuevos traumas o dificultades a otras personas.
Es claro que la historia de varios de los personajes esta condicionada por los traumas, cómo lidiar con esos traumas, la decisión que toma al final el personaje de Oscar Isaac, es justamente eso, su necesidad de castigar y sentir castigo lo lleva a ese lugar, también la decisión que toma el joven de no esconderse en un rutina y solo va a "enfrentar" sus problemas, le demuestra a "Tell" que debe buscar saciar sus necesidades, tal como lo intento cuando estaba en la cárcel.
