The Beekeeper - Movie Review [ES - EN]

La originalidad en el mundo del cine es un factor que en mi opinión existe muy poco y más cuando son films que buscan tener un impacto rápido o que solo necesitan generar una buena cantidad de dinero que primeramente cubra gastos de producción y segundo, pero igual o más importante, las ganancias; esta práctica se puede nombrar numerosos ejemplos, en dónde no importa el género del film o si son grandes o pequeñas producciones, al final lo importante es que se logre alcanzar las una o las dos características y en muchos casos eso sucede; porque al final la originalidad no importa, ya que cada vez más el público acepta una fórmula o un patrón, sin importar mucho la calidad de la producción.

"The Beekeeper", es una de las primeras producciones de acción del año que relata la historia de "Adam Clay", un hombre solitario el cual dedica su actual vida a ser un cuidador de abejas; su trabajo lo realiza en una granja perteneciente a "Eloise Parker", una mujer mayor que le tiene un gran aprecio a Clay; un día, Eloise es víctima de una estafa y se le extrae de sus cuentas una gran cantidad de dinero, ella desde su desesperación decide poner fin a su vida, eso hace que Clay, al saber las causas del porqué su amiga tomó esa decisión, active el protocolo de "The Beekeepers" la cual es una organización secreta creada para la protección de lo que ellos hacen llamar "La Colmena", una manera de hacer proteger al débil, de erradicar un mal, de hacer justicia y nada, ni nadie, detendrá a Clay de cumplir su cometido.

Esta película es dirigida por David Ayer, un director que en mi opinión no supera la mala experiencia de haber dirigido "Suicide Squad" y por eso ha mantenido un perfil bajo en sus últimos trabajos; en esta nueva oportunidad con un muy corto presupuesto, Ayer repite una fórmula que pude observar en uno de sus anteriores trabajos en dónde en mi opinión trata de recrear lo hecho en films de acción de finales de los 80' y de los 90'; eso hace que el film sea directo, rápido, con escenas en dónde el protagonista es completamente invencible y posiblemente sea algo aburrido, pero creo que funcionó muy bien para cierto público; personalmente creo que es aburrido porque las escenas son repetitivas, cortas, pero parecidas por las escenografías, las mismas tomas y lo poco impactante; las coreografías de los combates en su mayoría son simples, creo que eso es la manera de definir el trabajo de Ayer en la dirección de este film.

La historia es para nada original, seguramente que de manera inmediata se relaciona con la historia de "John Wick", pero es que existen y existirán más producciones en dónde el protagonista sea alguien tranquilo que esconde un pasado peligroso, que es alguien sumamente inteligente, entrenado y letal, el cual deberá recurrir a todo lo que sabe cuándo su vida de paz es interrumpida; está sinopsis no es solamente de la película protagonizada por Keanu Reeves, sino por muchas otras más. El guion fue escrito por Kurt Wimmer, al saber eso, no tenía esperanza con esta película porque él escribió el guion de "Expend4bles" la cual considero la peor película del 2023, pero en esta oportunidad debo decir que la historia que creó para este film es regular, transita en una delgada línea en considerar como una mal historia y otra aceptable, tiene sus pro y contras, siendo lo favorable la manera de escribir tanto a su protagonista como a los principales villanos y con respecto a lo malo, está en que fácilmente está película la puedo considerar como una sátira del género al ser tan evidentemente mala en ciertas situaciones, es risible y eso deja en evidencia que no se tomaron en serio a esta producción.

This film is directed by David Ayer, a director who in my opinion does not overcome the bad experience of having directed "Suicide Squad" and that's why he has kept a low profile in his latest works; in this new opportunity with a very short budget, Ayer repeats a formula that I could observe in one of his previous works where in my opinion he tries to recreate what was done in action films of the late 80's and 90's; that makes the film direct, fast, with scenes where the protagonist is completely invincible and possibly a little boring, but I think it worked very well for a certain audience; personally I think it's boring because the scenes are repetitive, short, but similar by the scenery, the same shots and little impact; the choreography of the fights are mostly simple, I think that's the way to define the work of Ayer in the direction of this film.

The story is not original at all, surely it is immediately related to the story of "John Wick", but there are and there will be more productions where the protagonist is someone quiet who hides a dangerous past, who is someone highly intelligent, trained and lethal, which must resort to everything he knows when his life of peace is interrupted; this synopsis is not only of the film starring Keanu Reeves, but for many others. The script was written by Kurt Wimmer, knowing that, I had no hope with this movie because he wrote the script of "Expend4bles" which I consider the worst movie of 2023, but in this opportunity I must say that the story he created for this film is regular, it transits in a thin line in considering as a bad story and an acceptable one, It has its pros and cons, being the favorable the way of writing both its protagonist and the main villains and with respect to the bad, is that this film can easily be considered as a satire of the genre to be so obviously bad in certain situations, it is laughable and that leaves evidence that they did not take this production seriously.

Antes de enfocarme en sus protagonistas, esta película presenta un aspecto algo extraño y es que personajes secundarios llevan el peso de mantener largos diálogos, tienen más tiempo en escena que los personajes principales y eso no es favorable porque sus actuaciones no son las mejores, en especial la de Emmy Raver-Lampman como "Verona", para nada es convincente su trabajo como agente del FBI, con problemas de alcohol, mala actitud y la obligada necesidad de resolver el caso; es el peor personaje y actuación que he visto en este año y como dije anteriormente, es una gran equivocación que tenga más diálogos que el personaje interpretado por Josh Hutcherson, el cual es el villano principal y quién hace un buen trabajo, es convincente como el "Niño Rico" que se cree intocable y que está por encima de todos; no es exagerado en su actuación y si divertido, de los puntos positivos del film junto al trabajo de Jason Statham como "Adam Clay"; su personaje claramente tiene una deficiente estabilidad mental y eso es muy importante en la actuación de Statham; "Clay" es un soldado, alguien que necesita un motivo y al obtenerlo, nadie lo detendrá, eso me pareció aceptable al igual que se mantenga el misterio de quién es aunque existe directas revelaciones sobre su pasado, pero no sé profundiza y eso me pareció bien; lástima que no se aprovecha en realizar mejores escenas de acción y hacer una mejor película.

Before I focus on the main characters, this movie has a strange aspect and that is that secondary characters carry the burden of maintaining long dialogues, they have more time on stage than the main characters and that is not favorable because their performances are not the best, especially that of Emmy Raver-Lampman as "Verona", her work as an FBI agent is not convincing at all, with alcohol problems, bad attitude and the obligatory need to solve the case; he is the worst character and performance I have seen this year and as I said before, it is a big mistake that he has more dialogue than the character played by Josh Hutcherson, who is the main villain and who does a good job, he is convincing as the "Rich Kid" who thinks he is untouchable and above everyone else; He is not over the top in his performance and is funny, one of the positive points of the film along with the work of Jason Statham**_ as "Adam Clay"; his character is clearly mentally unstable and that is very important in Statham's performance; "Clay" is a soldier, someone who needs a motive and when he gets it, no one will stop him, I found that acceptable as well as keeping the mystery of who he is although there are direct revelations about his past, but it does not go deep and that was fine; too bad it is not used to make better action scenes and make a better movie.

The Beekeeper tuvo un costo de 40 millones de dólares y hasta el momento ha recaudado más de 130 millones de $ en taquilla, un completo éxito para un film que no ofrece nada nuevo y que tiene muchas falencias; personalmente la encuentro un film regular, no es no de cerca lo que muchos críticos comentan de ser un buen film de acción, ya que es limitado, algunas escenas son tontas y dañan a su personaje principal; creo que se puede hacer un mejor trabajo porque existe un buen potencial para convertirse en una franquicia, por lo menos hacer una "necesaria" secuela que desarrolle la historia de su protagonista, aumento los retos a afrentar y que sea mejor; deben aprovechar la suerte que obtuvieron, el dinero que han recaudado para evolucionar, mejorar para mantener o aumentar ese inesperado éxito en la taquilla; como dije, esta historia tiene potencial y espero que cuenten con las personas adecuadas para desarrollarla.

The Beekeeper cost $40 million and so far has grossed over $130 million at the box office, a complete success for a film that offers nothing new and has many shortcomings; personally I find it a regular film, it is not nearly what many critics comment of being a good action film, as it is limited, some scenes are silly and hurt its main character; I think a better job can be done because there is a good potential to become a franchise, at least make a "necessary" sequel that develops the story of its main character, increase the challenges to face and make it better; they should take advantage of the luck they got, the money they have raised to evolve, improve to maintain or increase that unexpected success at the box office; as I said, this story has potential and I hope they have the right people to develop it.
