Masters of the Universe (2026) - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Después de un breve y decepcionante paso por las salas de cine en el mundo, Master of the Universe llegó a Amazon Prime Video, teniendo una mejor suerte al convertirse en el film número uno en esa plataforma, y fue esa la vía para generar las buenas opiniones (que ya existían) cuando por fin muchos decidieron verla; uno de esos incrédulos fui yo, quien, a pesar de ser un fiel seguidor de la serie animada y contar con juguetes que lamentablemente ya no tengo, decidí disfrutar de este film desde la comodidad de mi hogar y arrepentirme (como muchos) de no disfrutar de una producción que demostró fidelidad al material de origen y demostró valentía al relatar las aventuras de este gran héroe de una manera diferente.

After a brief and disappointing run in theaters around the world, Master of the Universe arrived on Amazon Prime Video, where it fared better by becoming the number one movie on the platform—and that’s how it generated positive reviews (which already existed) when many people finally decided to watch it; I was one of those skeptics. Despite being a loyal fan of the animated series and having owned toys that I unfortunately no longer have, I decided to enjoy this film from the comfort of my home—and, like many others, I ended up regretting not having seen a production that remained faithful to the source material and showed courage in telling the adventures of this great hero in a different way.

"MOTU" relata una historia mucho más apegada a la serie animada de los 80', aunque teniendo como notoria diferencia que su personaje principal, "He-Man", tiene un mejor trasfondo, lo cual genera un mejor motivo para ser el héroe de Eternia. Justamente ese desarrollo del personaje muestra desde un principio la conexión entre dos mundos, la Tierra y Eternia, lo cual en esta oportunidad tiene un mejor uso que en el film de 1987 o hasta en la misma serie animada, en donde en muy pocos episodios se hace referencia a esa conexión; en ese caso me pareció excelente que la historia por completa se lleve a cabo en Eternia, un lugar con personajes fantasiosos, poderosos, mágicos, y que también tenga la oportunidad de mostrar que en ese mundo existe la ciencia ficción con la aparición de robots y naves especiales.

"MOTU" tells a story that stays much closer to the 1980s animated series, though with one notable difference: its main character, "He-Man," has a more developed backstory, which provides a stronger reason for him to be the hero of Eternia. It is precisely this character development that shows, from the very beginning, the connection between two worlds—Earth and Eternia—which is utilized more effectively here than in the 1987 film or even in the animated series itself, where that connection is referenced in only a handful of episodes; In that regard, I thought it was excellent that the entire story takes place in Eternia—a place filled with fantastical, powerful, and magical characters—and that it also has the opportunity to showcase the presence of science fiction in that world through the appearance of robots and special spacecraft.

A pesar de que el director Travis Knight cuente con pocos largometrajes dirigidos y que este sea su segundo film en versión de acción real, me atrevo a decir que hace un buen trabajo en este tipo de producciones que intentan rememorar historias que fueron muy importantes en anteriores épocas. Lo demostró con la muy divertida y recomendada "Bumblebee" (2018) y ahora nuevamente realiza un buen trabajo dando vida no solo a "Adam/He-Man", sino a todo un mundo lleno de aventuras. Las múltiples secuencias de acción son muy divertidas y con excelentes coreografías; las persecuciones, batallas y, lo mejor, la relevancia de los personajes en cada una de las escenas de acción, es algo que difícilmente se puede apreciar, pero en este caso, Travis entendió la relevancia de los muchos personajes, tanto héroes como villanos, y todos brillaron en la película.

Even though director Travis Knight has directed only a few feature films and this is his second live-action film, I’d say he does a great job with this type of production, which aims to revisit stories that were very important in earlier eras. He proved this with the highly entertaining and highly recommended Bumblebee (2018), and now he once again does a great job bringing to life not only “Adam/He-Man,” but an entire world full of adventure. The numerous action sequences are a lot of fun and feature excellent choreography; the chases, battles, and—best of all—the significance of the characters in each action scene are elements that are rarely appreciated, but in this case, Travis understood the importance of the many characters—both heroes and villains—and they all shone in the film.

La historia es sumamente simple, es la ya repetitiva "El Viaje del Héroe" y, siendo honesto, no esperaba ver este tipo de historia en He-Man, ya que en la serie animada, todo está completamente definido, todo tiene un ritmo rápido y cada quien debe aceptarlo, pero en esta oportunidad no se podía demostrar ese tipo de ritmo y se necesitaba un desarrollo para profundizar en los motivos del personaje y, en mi opinión, me agradó esa demostración de pertenencia, de la necesidad de hacer el bien, de no demostrar temor en ser tú mismo y, justamente en esos breves momentos al comienzo de la película, me hizo pensar en todos los consejos que ofreció He-Man y demás personajes al finalizar cada episodio. Creo que justamente esos detalles fueron lo que considero que hace aún mejor a este film, que supo usar de muy buena manera la nostalgia.

The story is extremely simple—it’s the now-clichéd “Hero’s Journey”—and, to be honest, I didn’t expect to see this kind of story in He-Man, since in the animated series, everything is completely defined, the pace is fast, and everyone has to accept it, but this time around, that kind of pace couldn’t be maintained, and the story needed to develop to delve deeper into the character’s motivations. In my opinion, I appreciated that sense of belonging, the need to do good, and the courage to be yourself—and it was precisely those brief moments at the beginning of the movie that reminded me of all the advice He-Man and the other characters offered at the end of each episode. I think it’s precisely those details that make this film even better—it knew how to use nostalgia very effectively.

El casting fue perfecto, comenzando con Idris Elba como "Duncan / Man-At-Arms" un hombre correcto, con la convicción de generar lo mejor para cada uno de sus alumnos y que la derrota lo destruye, pero a la vez le motiva en conseguir su redención; otro gran personaje es del "Teela" interpretado por Camila Mendes, me pareció genial, le da una gran relevancia al personaje, es valiente, heróica, es uno de los personajes que más me gustó en la película; otra gran interpretación la realiza Nicholas Galitzine como "Adam", voy a simplificar su actuación de esa manera porque ese cambio que existe en la serie animada, no existe por completo en la película, ya que Adam está presente siempre, no hay imposición de un personaje diferente, no existe dos personas en uno y eso me pareció perfecto porque funciona en la película; como dije anteriormente, aquí observamos el viaje del héroe, estamls presenciando el comienzo del viaje de Adam para ser He-Man. No puedo cerrar este párrafo sin hacer referencia a la actuación de Jared Letto como "Skeletor"; qué buen trabajo, qué buena versión del villano; su desempeño en la mitad del segundo acto y en todo el final es excelente, seguramente es una de las actuaciones que más generó opiniones positivas en los últimos años.

The casting was perfect, starting with Idris Elba as “Duncan / Man-At-Arms”—a man of integrity, driven by the conviction to bring out the best in each of his students, whose defeat destroys him but at the same time motivates him to seek redemption; another great character is “Teela,” played by Camila Mendes—I thought she was fantastic; she brings real depth to the role. She’s brave and heroic, and she’s one of my favorite characters in the movie; another standout performance comes from Nicholas Galitzine as “Adam,” I’ll describe his performance that way because the transformation that exists in the animated series isn’t fully present in the movie—since Adam is always there, there’s no imposition of a different character, no “two people in one,” and I thought that was perfect because it works in the movie; as I said earlier, here we’re following the hero’s journey—we’re witnessing the beginning of Adam’s journey to become He-Man. I can’t wrap up this paragraph without mentioning Jared Letto’s performance as “Skeletor”—what a great job, what a great take on the villain; his performance in the middle of the second act and throughout the entire finale is excellent—it’s surely one of the performances that has garnered the most positive reviews in recent years.

Master of the Universe no es para nada perfecta y eso es debido a que en momentos (breves) del segundo acto no es del todo bueno, ya que en el guion no genera el necesario aporte de drama que impulse aún más los motivos del héroe; eso para mí sería lo negativo del film y no comparto con lo supuestamente excesivo o la necesidad de generar comedia, lo cual para mí no fue un gran problema. En realidad, creo que la película busca reírse de sí misma, de lo que generó la serie animada, la cual se convirtió en objeto de muchos memes y demás burlas, y justamente esa necesidad de generar nostalgia, lo cual brindó a todo fiel fan las escenas con mejor fanservice que he visto en años; todas y cada una fueron perfectas, y esas escenas generaron en mí un gran arrepentimiento porque hubiera disfrutado mucho recordando los buenos momentos en que vi las aventuras de He-Man cuando era niño. Por eso esta película es sorprendente, es divertida, entretenida y no sé si se hará alguna secuela o algún spin-off, pero si lo llegaran a realizar con todo el equipo envuelto en este proyecto, pues que cuenten conmigo desde el primer día.

Master of the Universe is by no means perfect, and that’s because there are (brief) moments in the second act where it isn’t quite up to par—the script fails to provide the necessary dramatic depth to further drive the hero’s motivations. That, to me, is the film’s main flaw, and I don’t agree with the criticism that it’s supposedly over-the-top or that it relies too heavily on comedy, which wasn’t a major issue for me. In fact, I think the movie is trying to poke fun at itself and at what the animated series spawned—which became the subject of many memes and other jokes—and it’s precisely that desire to evoke nostalgia that gave every loyal fan the best fanservice scenes I’ve seen in years; each and every one was perfect, and those scenes made me feel a deep sense of regret because I would have really enjoyed reminiscing about the good times when I watched He-Man’s adventures as a kid. That’s why this movie is amazing—it’s funny, entertaining, and I don’t know if there will be a sequel or a spin-off, but if they ever make one with the entire team behind this project, count me in from day one.
