La última semana del concurso "The Best Of Horror" ha llegado y para dar un gran cierre @wiseagent decidió dar una oportunidad a todos en Hive para que puedan participar, no importa que no hayas hecho ninguna reseña las tres anteriores semanas, ya que con hacer una publicación sobre un film de terror en la década de los 70' puedes tener la oportunidad de ganar un buen premio, si llegan a animarse les dejo el link con las reglas Best Of Horror.

The last week of "The Best Of Horror" contest has arrived and to give a great closure @wiseagent decided to give a chance to everyone on Hive so they can participate, it doesn't matter if you haven't made any review the previous three weeks, since by making a post about a horror film in the 70's' you can have the chance to win a nice prize, if you get to cheer up I leave you the link with the rules Best Of Horror.
En las semanas anteriores del concurso he hecho reseñas sobre films que había visto hace mucho tiempo atrás, pero para esta cuarta semana quise hablar sobre un film el cual no había visto, este es "Dawn of the Dead", estrenado en 1978, dirigida y escrita por nada más y nada menos que George A. Romero. Esta es la secuela de "Night of the Living Dead" y nos relata cómo se ha ido esparciendo a las grandes ciudades la infección de zombies, en donde cada vez más personas, deben buscar refugio para no terminar siendo víctimas de los muertos vivientes, un grave problema que se intensificado por una lucha de opiniones sobre cómo lidiar con esta criaturas y justamente estos inconvenientes son los que posiblemente puedan terminar completamente con la humanidad.
In the previous weeks of the contest I have reviewed films that I had seen a long time ago, but for this fourth week I wanted to talk about a film that I had not seen, this is "Dawn of the Dead ", released in 1978, directed and written by none other than George A. Romero. This is the sequel to "Night of the Living Dead" and tells us how the zombie infection has been spreading to the big cities, where more and more people must seek refuge to avoid becoming victims of the living dead, a serious problem that is intensified by a struggle of opinions on how to deal with these creatures and precisely these drawbacks are those that could possibly end completely with humanity.
El tema de los zombies siempre me ha gustado, me llama la atención las diferencias o virtudes que puede tener, por ejemplo en una historia puede existir muertos que reviven y salen de sus tumbas hambrientos de carne humana o personas que se infectan de algún virus que los transforman en estas criaturas, también podemos observar una importantes características la cual es si los zombies son lentos, rápidos, tontos o inteligentes y creo que desde esta base podemos tener una gran historia, pero hay algo importante y es el lugar en donde se desarrolla está historia, eso es vital porque te da esa posibilidad de saber cuántos podrán sobrevivir al final, por supuesto que todas estas características las sabe alguien como Romero el cual lo considero uno de los padres del género, quien usaba a estas hambrientas criaturas para hacer una crítica a cualquier tema sobre la sociedad.
En este film es muy bueno, sirve muy bien como secuela y muestra otras cosas que fueron importantes en la historia de "Day of the Dead"; mientras veía está película encontraba cosas que me parecieron fascinantes, no tanto sobre la actuación o participación de los zombies sino más que nada sobre cómo se comportan los humanos, los vivos en víspera del fin del mundo tal como se conoce, por ejemplo en esta historia existe una lucha de opiniones, diferentes pensamientos entre generaciones sobre cómo se debe lidiar con los muertos vivientes, creo que Romero busca crear un debate importante porque mientras en las grandes ciudades la infección avanza de forma muy rápida, en cambio en las zonas rurales, los militares, policías y la población se han unido para acabar con cualquier zombie que aparezca sin importar quién era antes de convertirse, esto fue algo que me gustó mucho porque a pesar de que este film fue dirigido 43 años atrás, el tema generacional, la lucha por saber quién tiene la razón y lo tardío de una respuesta para contrarrestar y detener la propagación de una infección que pueda terminar con la humanidad, esto es algo muy actual y para mí da un gran toque de terror tanto en 1978 como ahora.
The theme of zombies has always appealed to me, I am attracted by the differences or virtues that may have, for example in a story there may be dead people who revive and come out of their graves hungry for human flesh or people who are infected with a virus that transforms them into these creatures, we can also observe an important feature which is whether the zombies are slow, fast, dumb or smart and I think from this basis we can have a great story, but there is something important and that is the place where this story takes place, that is vital because it gives you the possibility to know how many can survive in the end, of course all these characteristics are known by someone like Romero which I consider him one of the fathers of the genre, who used these hungry creatures to make a criticism to any topic about the society.
In this film is very good, it serves very well as a sequel and shows other things that were important in the story of "Day of the Dead"; while watching this film I found things that I found fascinating, not so much about the performance or participation of the zombies but more than anything about how humans behave, the living on the eve of the end of the world as it is known, for example in this story there is a struggle of opinions, different thoughts between generations on how to deal with the living dead, I think that Romero seeks to create an important debate because while in the big cities the infection advances very quickly, on the other hand in the rural areas, the military, police and the population have united to wipe out any zombie that appears no matter who it was before becoming, this was something that I really liked because even though this film was directed 43 years ago, the generational theme, the struggle to know who is right and how late a response to counteract and stop the spread of an infection that could end humanity, this is something very current and for me gives a great feel of terror both in 1978 and now.
Como dije antes, Romero se toma su tiempo para contar esta historia de personas que primero buscan huir del comienzo del apocalipsis zombie y después sobrevivir al apocalipsis, personas que deben lidiar con un grave problema que son los zombies, pero creo que hay uno peor y ese son los vivos, aquí hay otra crítica más por parte de este director y guionista, muestra lo banal que puede ser el humano a enfocarse en lo material en vez de poder de recolectar los suficientes para sobrevivir, claro que todo esto es causado por los personajes creados para esta historia, me gusta que este film no existe el gran héroe, es más que nada un grupo de personas que se ayudan a sí mismos para sobrevivir, pero que no les importara ser egoístas si los problemas aumentan, me gusta que relate como se puede perder toda razón al momento de experimentar el fin del mundo, pero más me gusta es que cada personaje se sienta real, creo que esto era muy importante para Romero, contar con actores que tal vez no eran los mejores, pero si pudieran demostrar algo de realidad con respecto a lo que representan en la historia.
Pero si hay una crítica terrorífica de la sociedad por parte de este gran director, esa sin ninguna duda es la de los zombies y su memoria reprimida; eso de tener como única intuición el dirigirse a un centro comercial creo que es una idea sobre el consumismo, si está historia se hiciera en esta época tal vez fuera zombies mirando a sus teléfonos celulares, lo de tener a muchas de estas criaturas deambulando en lugar sin hacer más nada no se aleja de lo que hace los vivos al visitar a esos lugares, esto creo que para ese tiempo fue una idea genial, ahora no puedo dejar pasar otra de las cosas importantes y es ¿Qué tan terrorífico son los zombies? Hace días leí una opinión que decía que tan difícil es superar a personas recién convertidas en zombies, creo que es cierto, es un plus (para los zombies) enfrentar a una horda de muertos vivientes cuando no están descompuestos, lo otro es que son lentos, pero son persistentes, deambulan esperando poder conseguir a quien comer y al notar alguien vivo no se detienen, eso los hace peligrosos, pero para ser sincero no creo que sean los mejores, creo que sí reviso la etapa evolutiva de los zombies en los films de Romero, este es un paso importante que claro evoluciona mucho más en las siguientes películas.
As I said before, Romero takes his time to tell this story of people who first seek to flee from the beginning of the zombie apocalypse and then survive the apocalypse, people who must deal with a serious problem that are the zombies, but I think there is a worse one and that are the living, here is another criticism by this director and screenwriter, shows how banal the human can be to focus on the material instead of being able to collect enough to survive, of course all this is caused by the characters created for this story, I like that this film doesn't have the great hero, it's mostly a group of people who help themselves to survive, but they won't mind being selfish if the problems increase, I like that it tells how you can lose all reason when experiencing the end of the world, but more I like is that each character feels real, I think this was very important for Romero, to have actors that maybe were not the best, but if they could show some reality with respect to what they represent in the story.
But if there is a terrifying critique of society by this great director, that without any doubt is that of the zombies and their repressed memory; that of having as only intuition to go to a mall I think it is an idea about consumerism, if this story was made in this time maybe it would be zombies looking at their cell phones, having many of these creatures wandering in place without doing anything else is not far from what the living do when visiting those places, this I think for that time was a great idea, now I can not miss another important thing and is how terrifying are the zombies? Days ago I read an opinion that said how hard it is to overcome people just turned into zombies, I think it is true, it is a plus (for zombies) to face a horde of undead when they are not decomposed, the other thing is that they are slow, but they are persistent, they wander around hoping to get someone to eat and when they notice someone alive they don't stop, that makes them dangerous, but to be honest I don't think they are the best, I think that if I review the evolutionary stage of the zombies in the films of Romero, this is an important step that of course evolves much more in the following films.
Dawn of the Dead clásico dentro del género de zombies es un gran film, lo extraño es que la importancia de la historia y hasta creo que el terror viene más que nada por parte de los vivos, estos son los causantes de los verdaderos problemas y su pasividad llena de excusas para resolver drásticamente un problema es lo que termina de causar el fin del mundo, claro que los zombies tienen importancia, pero creo que Romero tiene la necesidad de mostrar que no hay criatura más aterradora que los mismos humanos, esto me gustó y es claro que hace mucho más diferente la versión hecha por Snyder que aunque mantiene que el consumismo sea el desencadenante del fin del mundo a crear hambrientos zombies, también busca ser completamente todo lo contrario, zombies rápidos, agresivos, una mujer como principal protagonista, más personajes para demostrar diferentes grados de la sociedad, le da importancia compartida a la acción, vivos y claro está a muertos vivientes y con esto no digo que sea mejor, sino que celebro que ambas películas sirvan, siendo dos formas de contar una historia. Con esta entrega culminó mi participación en el concurso The Best of Horror y antes de despedirme invito a @buffalobison y @stairway2heaven para que se animen y puedan ganar buenos premios, solo me queda desear suerte a todos y espero que el año que viene se repita.
Dawn of the Dead classic within the zombie genre is a great film, the strange thing is that the importance of the story and even I think the terror comes more than anything from the living, these are the cause of the real problems and their passivity full of excuses to drastically solve a problem is what ends up causing the end of the world, of course the zombies are important, but I think that Romero has the need to show that there is no creature more terrifying than humans themselves, I liked this and it is clear that makes much more different the version made by Snyder that although it maintains that consumerism is the trigger for the end of the world to create hungry zombies, also seeks to be completely the opposite, fast zombies, aggressive, a woman as the main protagonist, more characters to demonstrate different degrees of society, gives shared importance to the action, alive and of course the living dead and with this I do not say it is better, but I celebrate that both films serve, being two ways to tell a story. This is the overall theme and it's not subtle either. Romero really did have a great way of letting his views be known. You could go in purely for the zombies or stay and analyze a little about society.
Great review, this is one of the shining films from the period and it's still a great watch today. The Dario Argento cut is another whole topic and is very interesting too in regards to his personal vision.
The Dario Argento cut I must see, I think that's the one that lasts 2 hours and 39 minutes, according to it also looks like there's a different ending than the one Romero did.
The first Romero film I saw was The Land of the Dead and I immediately knew it wasn't just a story about zombies, I like how he uses the walking dead to deal with certain themes.
La pelicula es una feroz critica a la sociedad de los años 70. Excelentes efectos especiales de Tom Savini, un maestro entre maestro que hizo un buen remake de La noche de los muertos vivientes. Durante mucho tiempo queria ver la pelicula, que aqui en Venezuela se conocio como Zombie, pero era para mayores de 21 años. La primera vez que la vi fue en Betamax, y sólo me dejaron ver pedacitos de la pelicula por lo sangrienta que resultaba para la época. Pude rescatarla nuevamente ya de adolescente en VHS, y en la actualidad la tengo en DVD como parte de mi colección de George A. Romero. Imnumerables sus imitaciones, pero nunca igualada, bueno si, tal vez por el buen remake de Zack Snyder. Me gusta tu reseña, suerte en el concurso!.
La de Snyder la tengo como una de mis favoritas, me gusta el caos de la película y sus muchos personajes, el tema de critica es mínimo y solo hay una señal al comienzo del film, pero igual es muy buena, ahora esta de Romero es una excelente evolución de esta historia de apocalipsis zombie, hay algo que me parece impresionante es las escenas de los zombies comiendo, creo que son las mejores actuaciones de la película.
