En el Estadio Centenario, en Montevideo, Uruguay, la historia del fútbol venezolano fue reescrita al momento en que la selección femenina de fútbol alcanzó la instancia de repechaje para un mundial de fútbol en su más alta categoría; el empate obtenido por La Vinotinto frente al combinado de Uruguay fue suficiente para mantener el tercer lugar en la tabla clasificatoria, lo cual le proveyó una oportunidad más para ser partícipe del Mundial de Fútbol Femenino a disputarse en Brasil el año próximo. Esta es la primera vez que un combinado del primer equipo de fútbol venezolano será parte de un encuentro de repechaje, lo cual ya por sí es un hito para el país.

At the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay, Venezuelan soccer history was rewritten when the women’s national team reached the playoff stage for a World Cup in the top division; La Vinotinto’s draw against Uruguay was enough to secure third place in the qualifying standings, giving them another chance to compete in the Women’s World Cup to be held in Brazil next year. El día de ayer se disputó la última jornada de la Liga de Naciones Femenina de Conmebol, torneo que en su primera edición funcionó como clasificatorio para el Mundial de fútbol femenino a disputarse en Brasil; las 9 selecciones sudamericanas se enfrentaron en 8 jornadas divididas en 4 en condición de local y las otras 4 restantes de visitante. Este torneo ofreció dos puestos clasificatorios de manera directa para las selecciones que ocuparon las dos primeras posiciones y otros dos puestos para el repechaje a las selecciones que quedaron tanto en la tercera como en la cuarta posición; justamente la selección de Venezuela, demostrando un nivel competitivo, hizo frente a una exigente prueba y, contra todo pronóstico, alcanzó una tercera posición que ofrece una oportunidad más.

Yesterday marked the final matchday of the CONMEBOL Women’s Nations League, a tournament that, in its inaugural edition, served as a qualifier for the Women’s World Cup to be held in Brazil; the nine South American teams faced off over eight matchdays, with four played at home and the remaining four on the road. This tournament offered two direct qualifying spots for the teams that finished in first and second place, and two additional spots in the playoff for the teams that finished in third and fourth place. The Venezuelan team, demonstrating a high level of competitiveness, rose to the challenge and, against all odds, secured third place, earning another chance to qualify.

La selección de Venezuela tuvo un transitar placentero en la primera mitad del torneo, en donde llegó a estar en la primera posición de la clasificatoria, pero lamentablemente algunos resultados como el empate ante Ecuador y las derrotas contra selecciones mejor preparadas como Colombia y Argentina, hizo que el sueño de clasificar de manera directa se terminará y es por eso que ese tercer lugar se convirtió en una meta real para este equipo que aprendió a luchar y mejor aún, a reponerse de un mal manejo por parte del anterior staff técnico que hizo retroceder de manera considerable a todo el fútbol de selecciones del país y justamente esa necesidad de poder levantarse y competir hizo tener una reacción positiva a las jugadoras aunque también las llevo a generar una gran presión y hasta sentirse dubitativas con respecto a obtener un buen resultado y creo que eso las llevó a sufrir de manera innecesaria, aunque eso sí, después de caer decidieron levantarse rápidamente, lo cual les hizo centrarse y así sumar el punto necesario para estar en una estancia relevante como lo es el repechaje mundialista.

The Venezuelan national team had a smooth run in the first half of the tournament, at one point sitting in first place in the qualifying standings. Unfortunately, however, results such as the draw against Ecuador and losses to better-prepared teams like Colombia and Argentina dashed their hopes of qualifying directly. That is why third place became a realistic goal for this team, which learned to fight and, even better, to recover from the mismanagement of the previous coaching staff, which had set the country’s national team soccer back considerably. It was precisely that need to bounce back and compete that sparked a positive reaction from the players, though it also put them under immense pressure and even made them doubt their ability to achieve a good result. I believe that led them to suffer unnecessarily; however, after falling behind, they decided to bounce back quickly, which helped them refocus and secure the point needed to reach a crucial stage like the World Cup playoffs.

Desde esa selección que consiguió un bicampeonato sudamericano sub-17 y un cuarto lugar en el Mundial de esa categoría y nos ofreció a quien consideré como una futura referente futbolística en el país, pensé que el fútbol femenino venezolano debería ser un importante representante de ese deporte en el país, que levantara a las masas y pudiera generar un apoyo incondicional, pero lamentables y denunciables hechos contra las jugadoras que destruyeron sus motivos para seguir en el deporte, el mal manejo de quienes buscan fama a costa de quien es una estrella y el equívoco y a la vez nulo apoyo al fútbol femenino, generaron que todo lo positivo se fuese apagando y eso llevó a que por fin se tomara decisiones correctas para impulsar el fútbol femenino venezolano, lo cual se demuestra en la clasificación al Mundial Sub-17 y este importante logro como lo es el clasificar al repechaje, un encuentro que se llevará a cabo en el próximo mes de febrero en suelo brasileño y en donde el rival a enfrentar todavía es desconocido. Venezuela tiene el tiempo suficiente para prepararse, para tener la convicción de poder ganar un juego más que podrá llevar por fin a una selección de mi país hacia un Mundial, y solo espero que el pueblo venezolano entienda tal exigencia y apoye de manera incondicional a este grupo de mujeres y a sus entrenadores a alcanzar el gran sueño de ser mundialistas y seguir cambiando la historia del fútbol venezolano.

Ever since that team won back-to-back South American U-17 championships and finished fourth in the U-17 World Cup—and introduced us to someone I considered a future star of Venezuelan soccer—I believed that Venezuelan women’s soccer should be a major force in the sport here, capable of inspiring the masses and generating unconditional support, but regrettable and reprehensible acts against the players that destroyed their motivation to continue in the sport, the mismanagement of those seeking fame at the expense of a star, and the misguided and, at the same time, non-existent support for women’s soccer, caused all the positivity to fade away. This ultimately led to the right decisions being made to promote Venezuelan women’s soccer, as demonstrated by the team’s qualification for the U-17 World Cup and this significant achievement of qualifying for the playoff, a match that will take place next February on Brazilian soil, where the opponent is still unknown.
