Hellraiser - Film Review [ESP/ENG]
El cine de terror tiene personajes icónicos, Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Leatherface, Ghostface y Pinhead; cada quien tiene originalidad (no tanto Jason) y su marca que lo identifica o diferencia de los demás; algunos son silenciosos, otros hablan mucho, sea para burlarse de sus víctimas o para adoctrinar mientras causa un interminable dolor; esta última característica es lo que para mí representa el personaje de Pinhead, el cual siempre ve por encima a quien lo invoca. Este gran personaje lo descubrí en el film "Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth"; esta película (3.ª de esta franquicia) se estrenó en a principio de los 90' y la vi en varias oportunidades; me gustó tanto que me impulsó a ver las dos primeras películas, las cuales encontré muy diferente a lo que fue está tercera; "Hellraiser" (1987) y "Hellbound: Hellraiser II" (1988) sin ninguna duda eran más gráficas de lo que fue "Hello on Earth" y debo decir que la primera película es mucho mejor que todas las demás; con esto queda claro que me gustaba esta historia de personajes considerados ángeles y demonios, jueces que importen dolor a quienes se presentan ante ellos y es que los "Cenobites" por su diseño y por lo que representan, era imposible no considerarlos como uno de los mejores personajes en el mundo cinematográfico del terror.
Horror movies have iconic characters, Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Leatherface, Ghostface and Pinhead; each one has originality (not so much Jason) and his mark that identifies or differentiates him from the others; some are silent, others talk a lot, either to mock their victims or to indoctrinate while causing endless pain; this last characteristic is what for me represents the character of Pinhead, who always looks over the head of the one who invokes him. I discovered this great character in the film "Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth"; this movie (3rd. I liked it so much that it prompted me to watch the first two movies, which I found very different from this third one; "Hellraiser" (1987) and "Hellbound: Hellraiser II" (1988) without any doubt were more graphic than "Hello on Earth" and I must say that the first film is much better than all the others; with this it is clear that I liked this story of characters considered angels and demons, judges that matter pain to those who appear before them and is that the "Cenobites" by its design and what they represent, it was impossible not to consider them as one of the best characters in the cinematic world of horror.
La mayoría de los personajes que hice mención al comienzo de esta publicación se crearon a finales de los 70' y alcanzaron gran fama en los 80' y 40 años después (o menos), todos se convirtieron en víctimas de los remakes o las conocidas ahora como "Remakequel"; si mal no recuerdo, "Jason Voorhees" creo que fue el primero en tener un reinicio/secuela en el 2009 y le siguieron "Freddy Krueger" en el 2010, "Michael Myers" en el 2018, "Chucky" en el 2019 y "Ghostface", junto a "Leatherface" que estrenaron nuevos films en este año; algunas de estas películas son buenas, en mi opinión Halloween y SCREAM, pero las demás son malas películas; con todo esto sé que era inevitable que "Pinhead" no tuviera una nueva oportunidad en aparecer y ese día llegó en el pasado 7 de octubre cuando se estrenó por el servicio de streaming de Hulu y StarPlus para Latinoamérica. En esta nueva "Hellraiser", en el onceavo film de esta franquicia; veremos la historia de "Riley McKendry" una joven mujer que está comenzando a superar una vida llena de vicios y malas decisiones; la desconfianza de su hermano mayor, "Matt", quien piensa que su hermana está más cerca de recaer que de mantener una vida limpia, empuja a Riley a cometer equivocaciones que causarán graves problemas, uno en principal cuando se haga de un artefacto que parece ser un simple juego, pero en realidad es una vía para hacer entrar a nuestro mundo a criaturas que están listas para juzgar, castigar, enseñar desde el dolor eterno; justamente en ese momento Riley deberá hacer lo imposible para salvarse ella y sus amigos de ser víctimas de sus propios pecados, de sus propios deseos.
Most of the characters I mentioned at the beginning of this publication were created in the late 70's and achieved great fame in the 80's and 40 years later (or less), they all became victims of remakes or what are now known as "Remakequel"; if I remember correctly, "Jason Voorhees" I think was the first to have a reboot/sequel in 2009 and was followed by "Freddy Krueger" in 2010, "Michael Myers" in 2018, "Chucky" in 2019 and "Ghostface", along with "Leatherface" which released new films this year; some of these movies are good, in my opinion Halloween and SCREAM, but the others are bad movies; with all this I know it was inevitable that "Pinhead" did not have a new opportunity to appear and that day came last October 7 when it was released by Hulu and StarPlus streaming service for Latin America. In this new "Hellraiser ", in the eleventh film of this franchise; we will see the story of "Riley McKendry" a young woman who is beginning to overcome a life full of vices and bad decisions; the distrust of her older brother, "Matt", who thinks that his sister is closer to relapse than to maintain a clean life, pushes Riley to make mistakes that will cause serious problems, one of the main ones when she gets hold of an artifact that seems to be a simple game, but in reality is a way to make creatures that are ready to judge, punish, teach from eternal pain enter our world; just at that moment Riley must do the impossible to save herself and her friends from being victims of their own sins, of their own desires.
Sorpresivamente, he visto los tres largometrajes que ha dirigido David Bruckner; los dos anteriores a esta, que es su tercer film, son: "The Ritual" (2017) película estrenada en Netflix y "The Night House" (2020); el primer film lo considero regular, más que nada por su final que no me gustó mucho; el segundo film es sumamente bueno, es una de las mejores películas que vi hace dos años y la recomiendo siempre; ahora, en este nuevo film pienso que estuvo muy atado por el presupuesto y es que este es un film pequeño, ahora con esto no digo que sea malo o se vea barato; lo que quiero decir que a causa de esto, imagino que Bruckner decidió en enfocarse en mostrar a los personajes, al desarrollo de la historia de cada uno para después si hacer lo necesario en hacer un buen trabajo mostrando lo que todos queremos ver, a los Cenobites en acción; para esto creo que no es necesario hacer tomas maravillas y a pesar de ver poco castigo hacia varios personajes, creo que imagino que no se quiso gastar tanto en repetir varias escenas.
La historia me gustó mucho porque trata muy bien el tema del dolor lo cual es en mi opinión el principal en esta historia; aunque el dolor físico que sufre cada personaje que está cerca de la caja/rompecabezas o el dolor impuesto por los Cenobites, también está el dolor que te hace sentir vivo; en eso me parece que es una mejor historia de lo que fue varias de sus películas en especial la segunda, tercera y cuarta película, ya que en esta ocasión el desarrollo de su protagonista es algo que me gustó aunque no a primer momento, sino que mientras avanza el film pude entender del porqué de varias cosas que hace y le suceden a Riley para que pueda dar un mejor sentido al final de esta película; creo que por eso me gustó el guion, es algo bien planeado por Ben Collins y Luke Piotrowski quienes se encargaron del guion.
Surprisingly, I have seen the three feature films that David Bruckner has directed; the two previous to this, which is his third film, are: "The Ritual" (2017) film released on Netflix and "The Night House" (2020); the first film I consider it regular, mostly because of its ending that I did not like very much; the second film is extremely good, it is one of the best films I saw two years ago and I always recommend it; now, in this new film I think it was very tied by the budget and is that this is a small film, now with this I am not saying that it is bad or looks cheap; what I mean is that because of this, I imagine that Bruckner decided to focus on showing the characters, the development of the story of each one to then do the necessary to do a good job showing what we all want to see, the Cenobites in action; for this I think it is not necessary to make wonderful shots and despite seeing little punishment to several characters, I think I imagine that he did not want to spend so much on repeating several scenes.

I liked the story very much because it deals very well with the theme of pain which is in my opinion the main one in this story; although the physical pain suffered by each character who is near the box / puzzle or the pain imposed by the Cenobites, there is also the pain that makes you feel alive; in that I think it is a better story than several of his films especially the second, third and fourth film, because this time the development of its protagonist is something that I liked although not at first moment, but as the film progresses I could understand why several things that happens to Riley so I can give a better sense to the end of this film; I think that's why I liked the script, it is something well planned by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski who were in charge of the screenplay.
Con respecto a las actuaciones, solamente voy a referirme a las que hicieron las actrices Odessa A'zion quien interpreta a "Riley McKendry" y Jamie Clayton quien en este film es conocida como "Hell Priest"; ambas destacan sobre sus compañeros actores en este film, ya que hacen un buen trabajo en esta historia; la actuación de Odessa al hacer de una chica que a pesar de estar en un proceso de superar la adicción a las drogas, no terminan de representar una imagen de confianza, no tiene un buen empleo, no tiene dinero y a pesar de no consumir ninguna sustancia, eso no deja que sea una persona dependiente por ejemplo, ella depende de su hermano y su novio, pero al momento de no tener apoyo, eso la empuja a cometer malas decisiones; justamente esa inmadurez del personaje lo transmite muy bien está actriz y hace que Riley sea alguien molesto de ver y estoy seguro de que eso es lo que se le pidió a esta actriz, crear un personaje molesto para con todo lo que deba experimentar, vaya evolucionando y se haga mejor; ahora con respecto a Clayton como "Pinhead", vaya que aquí si se pudo crear un problema, pero creo que todo este asunto de la "inclusión forzada" el "obligatorio" cambio de género en un personaje, en esta oportunidad no fue para nada importante, creo que es primera vez que eso sucede y me pareció muy bien; ahora con el trabajo de esta actriz puedo decir que desde su aparición la película mejora y es que en su actitud, tomo voz, la manera de decir sus diálogos, en mi opinión es correcta; no supera al original y eso por los momentos también es correcto; me gusta que no sea una imitación, sino que trate de ser diferente aunque es difícil, pero me pareció genial que muestre como Pinhead disfruta su trabajo, disfrute castigar, tener poder, tener la razón, eso es lo que más me gusta de este personaje.
Regarding the performances, I am only going to refer to those of the actresses Odessa A'zion who plays "Riley McKendry" and Jamie Clayton who in this film is known as "Hell Priest"; both stand out over their fellow actors in this film, as they do a good job in this story; Odessa's performance as a girl who despite being in a process of overcoming drug addiction, does not end up representing an image of confidence, she does not have a good job, has no money and despite not using any substance, that does not let her be a dependent person for example, she depends on her brother and her boyfriend, but at the time of not having support, that pushes her to make bad decisions; just that immaturity of the character is very well transmitted by this actress and makes Riley someone annoying to watch and I'm sure that's what this actress was asked to do, to create an annoying character to evolve and become better with everything she has to experience; now with respect to Clayton as "Pinhead", well here if you could create a problem, but I think this whole issue of "forced inclusion" the "mandatory" change of gender in a character, this time was not at all important, I think it's the first time that happens and I thought it was very good; now with the work of this actress I can say that since her appearance the film improves and is that in her attitude, took voice, the way of saying her dialogues, in my opinion is correct; I like that it is not an imitation, but it tries to be different although it is difficult, but I thought it was great that it shows how Pinhead enjoys his work, enjoys punishing, having power, being right, that's what I like most about this character.
No puedo decir que Hellraiser sea un buen film, es regular y eso va debido a algo que tenía la expectativa de ver, me refiero a las escenas de terror que en mi opinión debieron ser más y mejores; la decisión de mantener todas esas escenas para la segunda hora del film, me hizo recordar a justamente la primera película que vi de esta franquicia y la que pienso que tuvo más influencia en el desarrollo de esta película; este nuevo film es igual de comercial de lo que fue ese tercer film y pienso que se perdió oportunidad de ser crudo, atroz en alguna que otra escena, que obligue a quien ve el film de mirar a un lado en vez de ver el castigo de los Cenobites; aparte de eso, no tengo otra queja más sobre este film el cual es correcto porque como dije, su guion, la historia que relata este film es perfecto para la franquicia, ya que estos personajes disfrutan dar castigo y justamente eso es lo que demuestra está película. Me pareció genial que se divida en dos partes, una para desarrollar a los personajes, en especial a Riley y la segunda para mostrar a los Cenobites que su diseño me pareció muy bien; los mismos Cenobites hablan de libertad y al verlos usar esa vestimenta de cuero negro creo que fue una gran decisión, seguramente los fans de Hellraiser que practican el sadomasoquismo estarán decepcionados, pero siendo sincero, no tuve ningún problema en ver estos nuevos diseños de estas criaturas vistas como angeles y demonios. Para cerrar mi reseña, estoy seguro que la decisión de hacer está historia sin ninguna conexión con las anteriores, teniendo a un nuevo intérprete de Pinhead, reviviendo (o tratando de revivir) todo lo que fue está franquicia me ha parecido correcto y uso está palabra porque fue así; no es un mal film, tampoco es el mejor, solamente un correcto intento de revivir a una franquicia y que espero que no se quede así, que haya una secuela más, que nos sigan mostrando a personajes consumidos por el deseo, ambición, egoísmo, poder y que sigan mostrando el castigo que se merecen.
I can't say that Hellraiser is a good film, it's regular and that's because of something I was expecting to see, I mean the horror scenes that in my opinion should have been more and better; the decision to keep all those scenes for the second hour of the film, reminded me of the first film I saw of this franchise and the one that I think had more influence in the development of this film; this new film is just as commercial as the third film and I think it missed the opportunity to be crude, atrocious in some scenes, forcing the viewer to look aside instead of watching the punishment of the Cenobites; other than that, I have no other complaints about this film which is correct because as I said, its script, the story that this film tells is perfect for the franchise, since these characters enjoy giving punishment and that is exactly what this film shows. I thought it was great that it is divided into two parts, one to develop the characters, especially Riley and the second to show the Cenobites that their design seemed to me very well; the Cenobites themselves speak of freedom and seeing them wearing that black leather clothing I think it was a great decision, surely Hellraiser fans who practice sadomasochism will be disappointed, but to be honest, I had no problem seeing these new designs of these creatures seen as angels and demons. To close my review, I am sure that the decision to make this story without any connection with the previous ones, having a new interpreter of Pinhead, reviving (or trying to revive) everything that was this franchise has seemed right and I use this word because it was so; it is not a bad film, it is not the best, just a correct attempt to revive a franchise and I hope it does not stay that way, that there is a sequel, that continue showing us characters consumed by desire, ambition, selfishness, power and continue showing the punishment they deserve.

Sentí que se quedo corta en mostrar ms escenas aterradoras de muertes, e trabajo de arte es bueno, ero yo tenia mas ganas de escenas mas gore. las dos actrices que nombras, me gusto su trabajo. El film es regular, como reboot para las nuevas generaciones funciona. Sigo prefiriendo la primera adaptación de la década de los ochenta, porque la vi muy joven y me impacto en su momento.
Los críticos profesionales han escrito cosas positivas y si las visualizaciones son buenas, no me extraña que pronto anuncien que harán una secuela de este nuevo reinicio
Te puedes imaginar que como digo en la publicación comencé con la más comercial y después ví la primera que es brutal y por eso cuando supe del reboot pensé que se iba a recuperar eso, pero imagino que al pertenecer a un servicio de streaming seguro tuvo una versión muy sencilla.
Está película junto a "Fall" son las que peinso que si las estrena Blumhouse, hace una buena cantidad de plata.

This new Hellraiser well and I am happy the producer took their time to do justice to the franchise itself. I was also expecting to be more gore, but it still works. So it's a win win!

I think Pinhead enjoys the needles in his head and more when he uses them against his victims, for me he is a great character and in this opportunity with a new version, I think it is done justice, Jamie Clayton's work is very good and I liked that she had a lot of time in scene, actually it is not that she is in all the scenes of the second hour of the film, but she has good dialogues, especially the ones she has in the denouement.
Hopefully in the sequel she will have more graphic scenes.

Nunca me he tomado el tiempo de ver Hellraiser, pero lo que sí te puedo decir es que es uno de los personajes que siempre he querido recrear, ya que me gusta el maquillaje artístico, y buena o no la trama, el personaje está super genial. He visto personas que critican la película y la verdad no dejan muchas ganas de verla jeje... Así que agradezco tu total sinceridad en esta publicación ✨
Puedes poner en práctica el maquillaje de la nueva versión de Pinhead, los detalles en el cuello son muy buenos, también puedes revisar otros Cenobites y hacer una versión propia de esos personajes.
Si quieres ver las películas originales, recomiendo las tres primeras en dónde justamente la primera película es la mejor; ahora está no es mala, es entretenida y si deseas verla puede ser que le guste.
