[Movie] Cuckoo - Review [ES - EN]

Cuckoo, película de terror estrenada en el 2024 que narra la historia de "Gretchen", una adolescente que, en su visita a los Alpes bávaros junto a su padre, madrastra y media hermana, se verá envuelta en extraños acontecimientos por los secretos que esconde el resort del nuevo jefe de su padre. Esta es una simple premisa que verdaderamente esconde un buen misterio a resolver, lo cual considero que fue lo más atrayente junto a la actuación de sus protagonistas.

Cuckoo, a horror film released in 2024 that tells the story of “Gretchen,” a teenager who, while visiting the Bavarian Alps with her father, stepmother, and half-sister, finds herself caught up in strange events due to the secrets hidden at the resort owned by her father’s new boss. This simple premise actually hides a compelling mystery to be solved, which I think was the most engaging aspect of the film, along with the performances of the lead actors.

Este es el segundo largometraje del director y guionista alemán Tilman Singer, quien por los momentos se enfoca en realizar proyectos de terror y que, gracias a su trabajo en este film, tendré en consideración el ver su anterior película. Al ser un director europeo y ser esta una producción de ese continente, es evidente el estilo de filmar en donde los exteriores son parte importante en el relato de la historia; a eso también sumo la necesidad de usar escenografías y tomas amplias para generar tensión y suspenso en varias escenas, eso sí con muy poco uso del "jump-scare", pero sí efectivos cuando son necesarios. El trabajo detrás de cámaras por parte de Singer me pareció bueno.

This is the second feature film by German director and screenwriter Tilman Singer, who is currently focusing on horror projects and whose work on this film has made me want to check out his previous movie. As a European director working on a European production, his filming style is evident—exterior shots play an important role in telling the story. I’d also add the use of wide shots and expansive sets to build tension and suspense in various scenes, with very few “jump scares,” though they’re effective when needed. I thought Singer’s work behind the camera was good.

El guion, escrito por Tilman, explora el instinto maternal; ese es un tema relevante que va unido al misterio del film y del cual no voy a profundizar más por no hacer spoiler. Existen otros temas también enfocados en la protagonista principal, la cual convierte la historia en un coming of age, ya que el personaje de "Gretchen" experimenta la soledad, el desapego, la necesidad de encajar en un lugar y también la independencia, lo cual es un desencadenante (por así decirlo) de lo que debe experimentar en esta historia; existe otro tema y es la imposición del hombre en la crianza y otros temas más sobre la mujer, en donde sí hay posiblemente un mensaje machista que está unido al misterio en la película y, repito, no diré más porque la narrativa es muy buena hasta que ocurre el descubrimiento de por qué suceden diferentes y extraños sucesos en ese lugar.

The screenplay, written by Tilman, explores the maternal instinct; this is a relevant theme that is intertwined with the film’s mystery, and I won’t go into further detail to avoid spoilers. There are other themes as well that focus on the main character, turning the story into a coming-of-age tale, as the character “Gretchen” experiences loneliness, detachment, the need to belong, and independence—which serves as a catalyst (so to speak) for what she must go through in this story; there’s another theme—the imposition of male authority in child-rearing and other issues concerning women—where there may indeed be a sexist message tied to the film’s mystery; and, again, I won’t say more because the narrative is very well-crafted until the moment we discover why various strange events occur in that place.

La actuación de Hunter Schafer como "Gretchen" es muy convincente; realmente se nota que no encaja en ese lugar y eso hace que la historia no decaiga porque su personaje tiene el motivo principal de irse de ese lugar y es el misterio lo que le impulsa a probar su sospecha y así validar su posición de independizarse. Es un buen desarrollo de su personaje, que es cierto que la convierte en una final girl, pero que tiene motivos válidos, principalmente el de sobrevivir, pero también uno muy unido al misterio del film. Otra gran actuación la realiza Dan Stevens, que tiene esa particularidad de ser misterioso, pero también mantener el encanto sobre demás personajes a los que se les hace difícil concebir como alguien sospechoso; eso lo hace perfecto, así como muchos otros actores que interpretan personajes muy ambiguos que hasta puedo decir que se convierten en un tipo de sátira sobre filmes de misterio.

Hunter Schafer's performance as "Gretchen" is very convincing; you can really tell she doesn't belong there, and that keeps the story from dragging because her character has a primary reason to leave—and it's the mystery that drives her to test her suspicion and thus justify her decision to break free. It’s a well-developed character arc—one that certainly makes her a “final girl,” but one with valid motivations, primarily survival, as well as a motive closely tied to the film’s mystery. Another great performance comes from Dan Stevens, who has that unique quality of being mysterious while still maintaining a charm over other characters—characters whom it’s hard to imagine as suspects; that makes him perfect, just like many other actors who play very ambiguous characters—characters I’d even go so far as to say become a kind of satire on mystery films.

Cuckoo me pareció un buen film; nunca indagué en su historia, tampoco vi algún tráiler, solo alguna que otra breve imagen y, al pasar tanto tiempo desde su estreno y mi decisión de verla, es evidente que mis expectativas eran bajas, pero de igual manera creo que así la hubiera visto hace dos años, igualmente la hubiera disfrutado; es un buen relato de misterio y suspenso, tiene un buen uso de la mayoría de sus personajes y a la vez tiene relevantes protagonistas, en especial el interpretado por Hunter, ya que la evolución de "Gretchen" es evidente gracias a sus motivos más que reales y posiblemente su personaje choque con todo lo que representa el personaje de "Herr König". Esta fue una grata sorpresa, un film muy europeo, con buen soundtrack, exteriores y demás escenografías bien filmadas y, repito, creo que el misterio de la historia es más que inesperado y su manejo con respecto a la revelación es para mí lo mejor del film.

Cuckoo struck me as a good movie; I never looked into its backstory, nor did I watch any trailers—just the occasional brief clip—and since so much time had passed between its release and my decision to watch it, it’s clear my expectations were low. Still, I think even if I’d seen it two years ago, I would have enjoyed it just the same; It’s a good mystery and suspense story; it makes good use of most of its characters while also featuring standout protagonists, especially the one played by Hunter, since “Gretchen’s” evolution is evident thanks to her very real motivations, and her character likely clashes with everything that “Herr König” represents. This was a pleasant surprise—a very European film with a great soundtrack, well-filmed outdoor scenes and other settings—and, I’ll say it again, I think the mystery of the story is truly unexpected, and the way the revelation is handled is, for me, the best part of the film.
