Quedaba por disputar la última jornada de la UEFA Nations League y los ojos de Europa estaban postrados en el segundo grupo de la Liga A en dónde las selecciones de España y Portugal decidirían quien sería el cuarto y último clasificado para la Final Four de dicho torneo; la selección de Portugal que en este encuentro cumplió la función de ser local, le bastaba tan solo un punto para conformarse como líder de grupo, ya que su abultada victoria frente a la selección de República Checa junto con la sorpresiva derrota de la selección de España, parecía que dejó el camino libre para que los lusos clasifiquen a una nueva semifinal y traten de ser los primeros bicampeones de la UNL; por parte de España, era justo y necesario de que hicieran un digno papel al querer ganar a una de las favoritas y alcanzar la semifinal de manera consecutiva y demostrar (nuevamente) que son un equipo que está dispuesto a luchar todos juntos para alcanzar un nuevo objetivo.
