Maharashtra Cultural Day being Celebrated in Oman

Maharashtra is a state in India and Mumbai city is the capital of this state where I come from. 1st May is celebrated as a Maharashtra Day back home, Last evening we had a Maharashtra Day celebrations take place here in Muscat city. There must be around 200 Maharashtrian families residing in Muscat and they put up this whole Cultural program together. The show gave glimpses of the traditional culture of the state and brought back some wonderful memories of back home.

This state is also called as the Gateway of India, and is the Financial Capital of the Country. Not only that it also has some of the largest Industrial Centers. This state holds a very important place on the map of India. The famous Indian Bollywood Industry is based here for the very reason that since the olden times Theatre and Drama was very refined here. It is also very popular destination for tourists, specially Mumbai city. It is a dream of almost every youth in India to visit this City. They say, Mumbai City never sleeps.

Though I am not a Maharashtrian by religion and culture but being born and brought up in this place makes me deeply connected with this place. One of my friend was performing in the show, so when he told me if I would like to come and see the program I was immediately ready. Anything related to home, I never want to miss. Moreover attending these kind of programs, we get to meet new people, network and also it is a good entertainment.

The show started with a speech from the Ambassador of Oman in India and with a Diya Lighting ceremony.

There were a variety of performances like singing, short drama, poetry and dance. The whole show was conducted in the traditional Marathi language. I am not very fluent in this language but I can understand so it was not much of a challenge, but still some parts were going above my head. But as they say for music and dance you do not need any language, and even though I did not understand every word but I enjoyed the performances. From all age groups there were performances, that was a good thing to see that everyone was actively participating.

The Show started with the most famous Indian Kathak dance, It is not a Maharashtrian dance but it was representing the spirit of India as a whole.

This little boy performed a small skit. The character he played was of Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji was one of the brave rulers of the state in 1600s.

It was a total of 3.5 hrs event, in the beginning we felt it was too long but time just flew and we had a wonderful entertaining evening. There was a half an hour interval in between where some snacks and beverages were served. All in all it was a good way to spend the weekend evening.
