A wealthy family in Germany always got whatever they wanted: money, power, fame, and the approval of those around them.
They used to show the public eye that they were a perfect couple: a woman of means whose family held positions in the country's top companies, and a husband from a German family who ran a business selling extremely expensive, renowned wines throughout Germany. Everything about them screamed perfection... but they held a small, delicate secret.
This couple could not conceive. They longed to have children, but somehow the woman of the house couldn't manage to get pregnant. This frustrated them both, and no one knew about their secret—only the destitute maid, who served as the security camera in the grand mansion where they lived.
A victim of mistreatment, ridicule, and humiliation, the maid endured every single day in that degrading job because she faced deportation if caught without legal status in the country. Her employers used this vulnerable situation to manipulate her, warning that if she didn't obey, they would report her to immigration to have her sent back to her deplorable homeland.
A deep resentment grew inside her as she watched them enjoy a life she could never have. But eventually, everything shifted. The news broke that the lady of the house was suddenly pregnant, and beside the couple, the maid was the only person who knew a baby was on the way.
The couple rejoiced over the arrival of a baby girl, just as the doctors had announced. As the months passed, they kept everything strictly under wraps, fearing that going public too soon might bring bad luck.
The maid carried on with her chores while plotting her revenge, remembering every harsh word, every contemptuous gesture, and every tear she had shed within those walls—all endured just to send money back to her children, who waited in her homeland hoping to see her again someday.
She endured as best she could, waiting for the right moment to strike. One day, while serving lunch at the usual hour, she caught the master of the house pouring a fine powder into one of the kitchen glasses and stirring it rapidly, as if terrified someone might catch him in the act.
When she walked in, he offered her the glass and said, "I know we haven't been the best bosses, but things will improve very soon, and you'll have a better life too." He looked at her strangely. She took the glass and drank, despite the lingering fear that something terrible might happen to her.
After her bosses left to eat, she still felt fine, as if the liquid had no effect on her at all. Soon, however, she noticed the wife starting to feel ill. She looked unwell, though her husband insisted it was likely just pregnancy-related dizziness.
Within hours, an ambulance arrived at the house. The wife had grown severely ill, losing a substantial amount of blood and feeling extremely weak. The maid watched it all unfold until the husband approached her, frantically asking if she had drunk from the green glass.
The maid then recalled that the glass she drank from was actually deep wine-red.Something in her silence made the man turn pale. He knew everything had gone wrong; in his attempt to eliminate her, he had killed the unborn baby inside his wife's womb.
The maid remained silent and spoke to no one, nor did the man offer explanations to anyone. The doctors attributed the baby's death to a miscarriage, leaving the family completely devastated.
The maid knew she could still be in danger, but in that shared moment of silence with the master of the house, she realized that if he ever threatened her again, she could expose everything to his wife—shattering their illusion of love and happiness forever.
Sometimes you have to keep in mind that if you plan on hurting someone, you might target the wrong person—or even the wrong glass, the maid thought, feeling a faint sense of relief and satisfaction...
This is my entry for the Literatos community competition – The Weight of a Secret 🤫🔏.
