I took a picture of this beautiful jumping spider from the banana tree next to my pond on 05/005/2026. I liked the black and white stripes on its body and the big eyes. So I thought, let's find out its real scientific name.

As expected, I uploaded the pictures to the iNaturalist app. But I was completely confused by the results of the app, it suggested several names to me, such as Megafreya sutrix, Pignus simoni, Pseudicius encarpatus, etc. But when I looked at their map, I saw that some of them are found in South America, some in Africa, and some in Europe. Where will they come from in our Bangladesh?

Then I took some time to compare the body design of the spider and the map. Finally, the real identity was found, its name is Gray Wall Jumping Spider (Menemerus bivittatus). This species listed in the app is mainly found in warm or tropical regions like our country. The black spot in the middle of the abdomen and the white border match it 100% exactly.

You see, just by looking at the black and white spots on the body, the AI was almost telling me it was a South American spider. Have any of our NatureObserver friends ever had the experience of seeing a picture of a local insect and getting a foreign name from an app?

Anyway, it's nice to finally find the right name. What do you think of our little local predator?
