Inkwell Prompt |-| Sins Of My Ancestors

Once it gets dark, and the sun leaves the sky for the moon and stars, sores would start coming out from both my eyes. These sores felt like fire balls melting through my shut eye lids, the pain was unmeasurable and uncontrollable. Everybody in the neighborhood has gotten used to hearing my screams of agony during the night. While the rest of the world slept, I wallowed in pain.

I have always wondered what humans look like, I heard the sky was blue, but I want to know the exact tone of blue, and probably count how many heavenly bodies that grace the sky at night. I heard the sunrise view was the best way to start your day, got me wondering how the sun rises, does it come from beneath the earth and ascend to the sky, all this was a mystery to me. Most importantly I wanted to know the device that magically brings foreigners into our home. Most times I hear strange voices talking, sometimes they speak in foreign languages, sometimes I hear gunshots, sometimes I hear explosions that make me want to get up and run. I'm told it's all happening in the Television, what the hell is that.

Honestly those who are fortunate to see all these things are really blessed. If I was just blind, it would have been a bit bearable. My blindness came with pain and trauma. It was called the blind sore curse. It's understandable when you suffer a curse that you actually brought on yourself, it is terrible when you suffer a curse like mine passed down from my ancestors that I never even met. The story goes that one of my great ancestors was a notorious terrorist who used people's first son's as ritual. When he was finally caught, a curse was placed on all his first son's from generation to generation.

Many have died trying to break the curse. My Dad fell off a mountain as he was being taken to consult a mountain wizard. My grandfather was sailing to the far east hoping to find a cure when the ship capsized, killing all on board. It was like the curse didn't want to be broken, and would take your life if you attempt to. Many would choose death over living with such pain, but I have made up my mind to live with the pain hoping for a miracle or magic. My brother on the other hand was hell bound to break the curse.

" I finally did it brother. I have learned of the only person capable of lifting the curse."

"Ethan, I've told you to give up this quest of yours. If it was possible to break this curse, my descendant before me would have done so."

"They didn't have the will power. I believe you can do this."

"You don't seem to understand. It's not about some stupid will power, it's about then power of the curse which kills anyone who attempts to lift the curse."

"If you won't do it for yourself, do it for my Little boy. You think it's okay that you chose not to have children, because you don't want your child going through this. But we both know that doesn't end the curse, it would come for my son once you are gone."

"Then I'd advice you to allow me live a long life, that way your son will have enough time to enjoy life before the curse. If I attempt to lift the curse and end up dead, he would bear the curse as a kid, you don't want that for him."

"If there's a tiny chance at breaking the curse, I wouldn't want to miss it."

The thought of little Ben going through what I'm going through made me consider my brother's offer. Further discussion with Ethan revealed that his plan was to travel to the abandoned Ice caves. It was rumoured that the first wizard came back to life and he has been hiding in those caves. It actually made sense that he might know how to break the curse, because he was amongst those that placed the curse in the first place.

Getting to the ice caves wasn't entirely a smooth journey. Each time we encountered an obstacle, I thought it was time to die. The ice caves had the stench of death. Most magicians and wizards come to the caves to die hoping to reawaken when the melting ice drops on them. I could only imagine how disgusting it was walking amongst the dead. I couldn't see them, but I stumbled on a few as we searched for the first wizard who was having a bath in an icy pool when we found him.

"What does a wizard got to do to have a private bath in this century?" The wizard asked when he became aware of our presence.

"We are really sorry to bother you," my brother spoke up. "Please great one, we need your help in breaking the blinding sore curse."

He gave out a loud laugh which echoed repeatedly in the dead silent caves.

"Oh! What I will give to watch the agony the accursed go through at night. Do you know how many mother's your ancestor rendered childless, how many father's he gave sleepless nights."

"With respect Sir, don't you think we have suffered enough. All these years, generation after generation, haven't we paid enough for the sins of our forefathers." Ethan said.

Once again the wizard laughed, then I felt his gaze fall upon me.

"I'm curious, is the cursed one dumb as well. Why doesn't he speak for himself."

Ethan tapped me trying to get me to speak up. Actually a whole lot was going on in my head at that moment.

"Wise one, I'm not cursed to be dumb as well. I'm just wondering why I wasn't killed like the rest of my descendants who attempted to lift the curse."

"That is because they actually had a shot at lifting the curse, but you've got nothing. I didn't place the curse alone, therefore I can't lift the curse on my own. The only way to truly break the curse, without dying in the process is if all the wizards involved are reawakened and they all agree to put an end to your misery."

His words were cold as the ice in the caves. If that was the only true way if breaking the curse, then my generation and I are doomed forever. What are the odds that all eight wizards would be reawakened at the same time. Even if paraventure they do, what are the chances that they would all agree to lift the curse.

"How do we reawaken all the wizards involved." Ethan asked, it was obvious that he wasn't giving up on lifting the curse.

He sent me on my way back home with the rest of the crew that traveled with us, he stayed back to help the wizards reawaken the other wizards and hopefully convince them to lift the curse. Nobody knew how long this would take, we only hoped it would happen before I die and pass on the curse to Ethan's son.

You don't seem someone who is new to Hive even though this account is, so I will skip the welcoming.

This is an interesting story but here's some constructive feedback to help you in your writing. With a short story, even a very short one, we look for a resolution of some kind. Every good story has a conflict that is resolved in the end.

I encourage you to make use of our catalog of fiction writing tips. You will find guidance on how to build characters, integrate action and dialog, write story plots and add a story arc. Without a story arc, stories do not seem complete. So that is one of the most important skills to learn. Good luck!
