Este compositor Barranquillero nace en el barrio de Abajo, el 11 de marzo de 1907, iniciándose en la interpretación de la guitarra y la guacharaca, convertido en acordeonero ya en edad madura; siendo invitado permanente, a partir de 1953 a los Carnavales de su tierra; al decir de Ángel Fontanilla quien fuera su amigo, la canción fue fruto de la historia de una campesina del Plato - Magdalena, que sostenía que su hijo, estaba embrujado convertido en Caimán; de ahí tomó Peñaranda el sentido de su composición. Una de sus majestuosas composiciones fue “EL CAIMÁN”, o SE VA EL CAIMÁN, pieza que el maestro compone en el 1941, y que fuera grabada por la Orquesta de Eduardo Armani en la voz de Johnny Álvarez, al igual que lo hiciera La Billos Caracas Boys en Venezuela en la voz de Víctor Pérez; fue tal el éxito de esta canción, que fue interpretada en la película mexicana de Juan Orol “Pasiones Tormentosas”, donde trabajan los cubanos Kiko Mendive y María Antonieta Pons, donde curiosamente Mendive afirma que la composición es de su autoría (Tomémoslo como parte de la representación). Canción presentada a través del tiempo en siete idiomas.
