Phantom Paper - 1bit Jam

(Edited)

Last week went a little bit crazy because I decided to join in 2 days late on the 1bit challenge jam.

To play the game follow this link (The html version can get a bit wonky for me but maybe it's my ancient pc that can't handle this high fidelity graphics)

Phantom Paper

I already had a plan because it was quite a while that I wanted to do a system like old Ps1 era Grand theft auto and this happened just at the right time.
The whole thing took much less time then expected but still was a big undertake and now I plan too go more easy on gamedev before feeling too burned out.

The Jam theme was to start with everything and end with nothing so the idea is to impersonate a Mailman that has to deliver all the mail. It's not the most original idea and I think I forgot about the theme by the end of the Jam but oh well the system is now up and running.

The main characther was easy enough to make with just taking in account that diagonal movement need some further step to work properly and to that to add a function to jump on veichles and jump off.

Going into the driving part was what I feared most but in the end it wasn't really impossible to implement though the brakes don't work very well and the right way to brake in the game is to release all the pedal inputs attached to Up/Down keys.

Though the time flew by and I had still to design the map for the city that took quite some time and while I was working at it I felt that only delivering mails was not super cool while it would take some good aim and a nice route to deliver all of it I wanted to add a bit more side things to it.
Traffic and people would have been so cool and I look foward to add something like that but it would have needed another whole week probably for that alone so I resorted on phantoms. Mailman hunting phantoms so I set up different clocks from different spawners that will create more and more phantoms as the clock wear down. I still think there's quite a bit of balancing to be done and maybe this could be working better in more tight levels I'm still happy because I can drive around on the Viper on the cursed highroud at full throttle( how much time I spent on the Gta demo just running around I don't know 😂)

This wrap things up as the voting ends in one month and I want to take a little breather and look at the work past and share with you guys some of the tricks and methods I found in this time
