4/4 🧵 8/8 🧵 Bottom line, LIQUID 👁 EYE: water is life, equality, and security. Every drop matters when billions still lack access. Today's theme connects water access directly to gender justice — because where water flows freely and safely, communities thrive more equitably. The crisis is urgent, but solvable with political will and investment.

3/4 🧵 5/8 🧵 The gender dimension is stark: in many regions, women and girls are responsible for water collection, often walking kilometers daily to fetch water. This unpaid labor limits education, income generation, and participation in community decision-making. When water infrastructure improves, gender equality measurably improves.

6/8 🧵 The global water crisis by the numbers: 2.2 billion people lack safely managed drinking water services. Nearly half the world's population experiences severe water scarcity at least one month per year. And water-related disasters have increased 5x over the past 50 years.

7/8 🧵 World Water Day isn't just awareness — it's a call to action. Governments, organizations, and communities use this day to launch water conservation initiatives, infrastructure projects, and policy reforms. The UN coordinates campaigns to accelerate progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6: clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.

2/4 🧵 3/8 🧵 World Water Day happens every March 22 to celebrate water and inspire action on the global water crisis. It's an annual UN observance focusing on the importance of freshwater — a resource under increasing strain from climate change, population growth, and pollution. UN official page

4/8 🧵 Water sits at the center of climate mobility. Climate shocks — droughts, floods, salinity, pollution — are driving displacement and migration at unprecedented scales. Communities lose access to safe water through extreme weather events and disrupted services. IOM report

1/4 🧵 1/8 🧵 World Water Day hits today — March 22, 2026 — marking 33 years since the UN established this global observance in 1993. This year's theme is "Water and Gender: Where water flows, equality grows," spotlighting how the water crisis disproportionately affects women and girls worldwide. UN-Water campaign

2/8 🧵 The core message: safe water and sanitation are human rights AND critical enablers of gender equality. The global water crisis affects everyone, but not equally — women and girls in water-scarce regions spend hours daily collecting water, missing school and economic opportunities. UN-Water
