We lost some Turkey poult -Lessons to learn from the cause of their death.

Hello Hive

I finally had a long relaxing Sunday and had remained in bed after the Sunday service. Tomorrow is a big day for us as we are preparing to start the transplanting of rice seedlings in the swamp. It is one of the activities I both love and dread at thesame time. I don't have a challenge transplanting rice in the swamp especially as it usually some sort of a fun-filled activities for us. A good number of people gather around the farm and continue to transplant rice in the swamp while gisting and pouring out the thoughts of their minds.

The only challenge I have with transplanting rice is how that one gets one get sick easily as a result of the cold swamp water. Myself especially I usually first catch a flu which then results to sepsis and then a full blown crisis, nevertheless we have to do these activities if we are going to grow any grains to eat come harvest. Anyhow it happens I often find a way to manage the situation .

Talking about the cold, we lost a recently hatch poult yesterday. After hatching the first set of poults from our mother turkey here in which they have now grown above a month, we have giving the mother some eggs from another female turkey that was unable to incubate and hatch her eggs. Remember I said it earlier that not all mother turkeys are able to hatch their eggs by themselves, they are all capable of laying eggs but not all of them can incubate and hatch eggs hence we try to recognize a mother that is consistently able to do so of whom we then give her eggs from other birds to hatch.

She was able to hatch about two poults from the eggs giving to her by another mother turkey.

Just yesterday we lost both poults and was wondering what night be the cause of their death since there are no issues or cases of bird flue in town. After much checking we soon found the cause of the death.

The poults have spent about 4days after their birth and were seriously cold, the Agric store has advised that we add some tetracycline to their feeding water maybe they had caught some infection that is coming in form of severe cold for them.
We got the drug and gave them some two doses of it but after that occasion my niece had consistently added the drug to their water without our knowledge.

Be mindful of what you feed your poults whenever they are young and healthy like this. Cleaning their feeding plates daily is also an important task that shouldn't be missed.

The overdose of the drug must have resulted in the death of the poults.
There are times we often admisiter antibiotics to bird feeds but one has to be careful and mindful of drug overdose even among farm animals. My niece is just 12years old and didn't understand much. Each time she was sent to feed the birds she add some drugs to their water hoping that she was doing them a favour. After the losses now I believe that she has learnt her lessons. We often engage our children in our farming activities. It is good for them to learn as everyone can see how profitable if can be to keep a garden or raise little as farm animals at home.
Regardless of your career or profession in life you can always enjoy these little activities. They can serve as some exercises to keep us busy and also as some form of side hustles.

Aside the loss of these two poults we have so far been successful in raising the other farm animals.
