We are gradually taking baby steps into our farming exercise for this year. The first sets of crops we often plant are the tuber crops talking about potatoes and yams . Corns are often planted alongside these crops as well.

The planting of yams often take place in the months of November and December, which is towards the end of every farming season. The reason for doing this is because yams often take longer period for their growth cycle hence they are planted much earlier.

Right after making the yam Hips, the seeds gets prepared and planted then mulching takes place. Mulching has to be done for the planted seeds in order to preserve the tan seeds from harsh and extreme wether conditions until they are able to survive the heat season and stay viable to continue growing when the rain comes . This is what the process of planting yams looks like. By now everyone that wishes to grow yams this year must have planted them from last year Nov/Dec. While that is on, we equally plant whatever yam seeds that comes our way at this time.

Yam planting, growth and harvest doesn’t all happen at the same time . When harvest comes the tubers often mature independently hence more planting can be done. At harvest we start picking the natured tubers first while the other we plant late takes enough time to continue growing.

I was gifted some tubers of yam recently and have preserved the seedlings and got them ready for planting . Part of it now has germinated right here in the house and about to continue its growth process, it is important to dip this in the soil but I’m thinking of planting it at home here just like the way I had planted some sac potatoes a year ago .

Talking about potatoes the leaves we have propagated some two weeks ago have now grown and spread longer enough to give us more leaves that we can plant in the farm . Potatoes are planted using the vegetative part and when the rains started we took the single vegetative stem at home and propagated it so grow and give us some more stem for planting
