Let's Harvest Areca Nuts In My Garden!

Remember you guys with my kale garden in the hivegarden post a few weeks ago? Everything has been submerged in puddles of rain. Everything died and I failed to harvest.

This is very sad my friend. But I have a few meters of betel nut behind the house. This time I will share the experience of harvesting areca nut with all of you.

Due to the pandemic and my kangkung failed to harvest, I had to harvest the areca nut in the garden even though they were not ripe enough to be harvested, but young areca nut was also purchased at a hefty price. In my place the price of areca nut is around $0.9 per kilogram.

This is already fairly expensive compared to the previous price of around $0.6. Because the betel nut trees are old and tall, I was forced to hire the services of children who work as betel nut pickers or climbers. Perbatang they earn about $ 0.2, in a day they can earn $ 3-4 depending on the number of people who hire their services. They were very young, maybe 8-10 years old.

But they're working and independent, they're great kids. Amazingly, they climb a tall tree without using any safety equipment, with a few support ropes on their legs and a small knife.

Yesterday I harvested only eight betel nut trees, because the others did not bear fruit. I only got about two sacks. If it is peeled and ready to be sold, maybe only 10-15 kilograms, it has helped my economy which is currently declining a little.

After harvesting yesterday afternoon, that night my wife and I immediately peeled it so we could sell it immediately. Even though my wife is pregnant, she is very passionate about peeling betel nut, even though I have forbidden her to work in order to maintain the pregnancy. Today our areca nut harvest is ready to sell, may the sustenance be a blessing.

These are some photos when I harvested the areca nut yesterday, I hope you like it. And the part about the Kali Gardens in #hivegarden, yes, @riverflows seems to really like gardens. Ha ha ha...

This makes me remember my grandfather and grandmother, they used to chew it in place of cigarettes.
