Garden Journal Bi-weekly Newsletter 19th July 2023

Things got away from me again and it's been far too long since I got a really good read through garden and homesteading posts. It's good to be back and I hope you enjoy the highlights I've selected.

Do many schools have gardening as part of the curriculum any more? I feel like in Western countries we're lucky if they do more than dabble a little with it in the early years. It's great to see that they have a big emphasis on it in the Philippines, however. This week @luckylaica couldn't resist a little tour around the school garden when she went to her son's award ceremony. They've really made it quite a stunning, colourful attraction.

Just how much fruit and veg can you grow on a balcony? If you're @momgrow, then I'd say it looks like a LOT! I swear this is more than I manage to produce in my big back garden! I feel like I need proof that this really is just grown on a balcony!!

It's been a while since I included one of @isdarmady's hydroponics updates. I'm still as impressed as ever by his knowledge, experience and produce. This week it looks like he's been harvesting lots and there are new seedlings all ready to go in and replace the harvested plants.

Earlier in the week I got to enjoy a virtual tour around @cosmictriage's healthy looking Laughing Dragon garden. It was a real pleasure to meet and interact with this lovely gardener. Her photos were positively mouth watering!

Beneficiaries go to @isdarmady and @luckylaica.

The carrot looks so huge. Seems fertiliser was applied to it?

They do, don't they! I wish I could say the same for my own garden. 😕

I love the Phillipine school garden program - it's so inspiring. Some schools have enviro science teachers who do gardens and I know some primary schools do the Stephanie Alexander program but it's not everywhere as it should be @minismallholding.

When my girls were in primary school here I think there was a brief attempt at a school garden with the youngest's class. There was absolutely nothing like that in the UK state schools, though. Even hubby had nothing like that.

I didn't farm nor do I remember. It was only a few hours at school.
