My Favourite Possession

I have lost many things along the way, and I've given away many too, but my favourite item will always be here at my parent's house.

I was 21 years old when I purchased a lamp at a store downtown Montego Bay, Jamaica. Upon entering the newly opened furniture and collectables store that was much a rave in town; I was dazzled by the display of art deco nude woman figure tabletop lamps with white globe lights. They were the most captivating things I'd seen, and I knew right there and then that I had to have one.

There might have been over 10 different stunning poses, which left me in a quandary not knowing which one to purchase.

In a moment of glee, I made the executive decision and purchased this lamp.

My reasoning at the time was that it was not the most elegant, picturesque, or impressive of all the poses, but at that moment, I had a flashback to my childhood. This pose displayed by the lady was my default position which I often did against the wall on my bed when I needed time out. I also recalled pondering what was the reason why I always reclined in that position.

Without any doubt or second-guessing, I left the store with this (extremely heavy) lamp and took it back to my rented flat.

A few years later, still unheard-of yoga, I moved to live at a new location that was right on a cliff directly in front of the sea at an old hotel called Eaton Hall in Runaway Bay, St. Ann, Jamaica.
Big waves came bouncing against the walls and would sometimes splash onto the pool area. There I started doing movements that seemed to come naturally out of nowhere.

One Christmas, there was a parcel delivered containing gifts from some repeat guests at the resort where I worked, and in it, was a VHS Yoga cassette (those things are obsolete now).

Somehow, my colleagues (a gregarious crew of entertainment staff who shared an office with me) 'mockingly' said, "Oh this must be for Milly, she has the temperament to sit quietly and do yoga.

I responded, "thank you, I AM interested in Yoga."

The crew chuckled and remarked,
"We know you well."

Later, I discovered that the pose of the lady on the lamp was a yoga pose called the shoulder stand. I then realised that the other elegant poses from the collection, that I'd seen in the shop were all yoga poses too.

I've often wondered, had I known yoga and all the different poses when I was making the selection of lamp if I would have made the same decision and purchased this pose that reminded me of myself as a little girl.

Maybe, maybe not! Still...

My favourite position, became my favourite possession.

I've always been happy with the lamp, and it's comforting to know that the Shoulder Stand is referred to as the Queen of all the asanas as it helps the body both inside and outside.

I've never told my mum that the lamp is precious to me, simply because I would hate for her to suffer guilt or try to replace the lamp if it broke or got damaged.
I would simply accept the end.

However, when I entered my parent's house last November, the lamp was the first thing that I saw on the centre coffee table.

I smiled. 🖤

The photos are mine

Happy New Year, Milly!
I love the lamp and it's funny, I've never done yoga but I used to do that position on my bed when I was a teenager and shared a room with my sister. My bed used to be against the wall.
My best wishes to you in 2023 🤗

Happy New Year to you too, Coquicoin 🤗

Yeah, it's funny!
I wonder what it is about that position?
I was bowled over to learn that that pose was yoga.

You never know, maybe you should give yoga a try 😁

Your mind is open to yoga, so I'd say give it a go.

I'll recommend you to a safe, easy-to-follow yoga routine. It's the very first routine that I came across, and I always find myself going back to it.

I have been doing this since her VHS days, and I cannot count the number of DVDs that I've purchased.
Since I've been back here in Jamaica, I discovered that her routine is now available on Youtube.
It's a demonstration with 4 different yoga instructors with all different levels of modification for different body types.
The presenter has a soothing voice and comes across as humble, caring, and kind.

The setting is relaxing and also the background music.

... it's Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss by Suzanne Deason 👍

Yes, my mind is open to it. Thank you very much for this. I'll give it a try.

Better, so I can lose some of the pounds gained with the Christmas food, hehe 😄

Haha! I really need to get back to doing it for the same reason... I still have more slices of Christmas pudding to eat though 😅

Haha! That's me... I just had 2 slices, and seeing this, I might have another slice as an appetiser, then another one as dessert.

It would be a shame to ignore the cake and leave it sitting in the corner 😂

That's a nice lamp. It's very unique. It's neat that it spoke to you before you even knew about the specific yoga pose. 👍

Art Deco is so cool! Back in my younger days when I did yoga, this was one of my favorite poses, too! Definitely a lovely objet d'art! 💜

It must be a "feel good" pose because it's a fav of many it seems.
Thanks, I'm surprised that I still have it, but special things are safest here at my mum's house:)))
Happy new year and all the best for 2023 😘💚

It must be so nice going home to see all these possessions from so many years ago. As much as people like minimalistic, and I know you're a fan of it, memories and nostalgic just isn't the same without something physical. Will you be bringing the lamp back with you or will it stay at your mum's?

That's so very true. I've come back to things that I had totally forgotten about, yet one thing triggers another memory. There's one candle holder that I really liked. It's not here, and I have a vague memory of packing it and I might have taken it back to the UK at some point. If that's the case, then more than likely it's lost forever😏... So, NO! There's no way I'm ever gonna take that lamp away from here 😊

That's a super sweet story! And a very cool lamp :)
I love that it brings memories of you as a kid, precious.

You know, this really does sound like a "that's what she said" joke.

Seriously, that's a really awesome piece, and I love the story to go with it. VHS! Now that's nostalgic. My 13 year old who is infatuated with all technology more than 20 years old wants one. I'll do a lot for my children, but... no.

Haha!😂
Yeah, I agree with you about not allowing your kids to cause you to revert to using VHS:) ... Funny thing is that I have a case of VHS cassettes and I even have an old VCR in storage with the remote control taped to it. I probably should check to see if by chance it still works. I can't imagine the tape to be good in this humid climate though.

I think I was the last person to progress to CDs and DVD's... My friends got frustrated and bought me new appliances 🤣
