December 2023 (Photo Essay)

(Edited)

I've spent the last month introspecting and implementing some imminent changes. One, in particular, has been connecting with my family and friends and visiting the city of Leicester, where I lived when I first arrived in the UK as a newlywed.

This was the perfect opportunity for me to reunite with my in-laws, whom I had not seen for ages.

A casual family meet-up at the beginning of December. Gill, my mother-in-law (left), @kaykeys, my stepson (centre) and @scubahead hubby (right).

Gill is a force to be reckoned with, and amongst us, she's referred to as 'General Gill '. Hubby and I recently celebrated our 15th anniversary, which saw us apart due to work obligations. However, it was a great chance for Gill and I to bond, and we got on like a house on fire.

Gill's partner passed away earlier this year, so since this would have been her first Christmas alone, I decided to spend the entire Christmas into the new year, as she celebrates her birthday on New Year's Day.

Gill's beloved garden

This photo was taken while having our morning tea and reading the newspaper, a daily routine for Gill. We both like birds and animals in general, and she teaches me the names of the regular ones— robins, thrusts, magpies, pigeons, and squirrels— that perch down to eat food that she leaves for them every night.

There's also this stray cat that Gill has adopted.

Gill had a cat flap installed, so the cat sleeps and eats here and goes away for hours, returning ravenous. She now turns her nose up at some cat food, but she loves Whiskas.

We spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Gill says she's not the best cook, but she knows little secrets and takes delight in sharing them.

Our palettes are different, and herbs and spices, or seasonings in general, are not a priority for Gill's meals. So upon realising at the last minute that it meant there was no mint sauce for the leg of lamb, she said, Oh, there's a mint plant in the garden.

"Hey Gill! May I take a photo of you teaching me how to make mint sauce, for my blog?"

"If you must!" said Gill.

The thing is, there's mint growing in almost every garden in Jamaica, but we tend to only use it to make tea. So, the thought of making mint sauce from scratch never occurred to me.

Chalk and cheese

I won't lie. Gill is 'full-on', hence her nickname, 'General Gill'.

Surprisingly, though, we are compatible and see eye to eye on many things, hence why my husband and some of my friends call me 'Sergeant Major'.

We both have strong personalities, the difference being that Gill is loud, demanding, high-maintenance, and talkative. Whereas I'm quiet, reserved, low maintenance and enjoy being in my little world, and as Gill has observed and said, "you're stubborn," which rang familiar like my mother's cry.

Oftentimes, Gill and I find ourselves reminiscing while reading the papers in the kitchen, and now and then we stop to do puzzles and quizzes before going back to telling tales from our past.

Maintaining my sanity

It's been a marvellous experience— something that never happened before now, as I'm the kind who lets things such as friendship develop naturally. However, there are days when I need an escape, and I always go walking.

I need nature and the outdoors, and Leicester is the perfect city due to its mix of nature and city life, with historic buildings, shops, and multi-cultural liveliness.

This series of 6 photos was on my stroll across Victoria Park, which leads to Queens Road and Clarendon Park, which is known for its cosmopolitan flair, with several bars and restaurants.

My timing was good for the annual Christmas Street Fair, on Queen's Road.

Small business owners display handmade goods and products, inclusive of jewellery, arts and crafts for sale and street food.

I had samosas from an Indian stall, but I was still hungry, so I headed back to the town centre, which was only 10 minutes away.

City Centre and street scenes.

I treated myself to what has become a guilty pleasure— pistachio milkshakes and hotdogs from a new dining outlet right by the clocktower in the town centre, called Five Guys. This was a convenient stop for me to warm up and watch the world go by while doing what appeared to be Christmas shopping.

Five Guys makes hot dogs how you dream of them, with a selection of 15 free toppings ranging from jalapenos, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, lettuce, and a lot more.

Overall, my experience with Gill has been an entertaining, educational, and informative one.

"I'm from a family of nomads, from my grandparents down, who have all been in the forces," says Gill.

She's lived an exciting life, from being a war baby and the only child of parents who ran a huge public house (pub), to being an Au Pair for 6 kids in America, where she met my husband's father, to being an international telephone operator in the USA and UK, an air traffic controller in the Royal Airforce, to being the front of house at one of the prominent museums in Leicester for many years... and yes, I've heard several tales, several times, and that's also been something for me to ponder.

My brain has expanded, and my mind's listening speed has increased after taking in all the stories. However, this connection with my mother-in-law has been a positive one, which I'm happy that I made the effort to do, as this will help me to go into the new year with an optimistic mindset.

Thank you for being part of my journey in 2023, and I'm looking forward to 2024.

Happy New Year, Y'all 🔮

we got on like a house on fire.

Lmao 😂 is that good or bad?

From your post it sounds to be mostly good overall. It's not always easy to spead extended times periods with your in laws. Sounds like your are making it work though.

Pistachio milkshake. Interesting flavor. Sounds delicious. Treat yo self.

Is that good or bad?

Haha! It's a good thing, which has been a surprise.

Anyone who knows Gill, thinks I'm brave enough to spend time with her, but it works cos I'm easygoing.

Hubby always says,
"Gill is as loving and compassionate as a hand grenade."
Trust me, that's not a lie.
However, my stepson and I bring out her rare soft side, and apart from being rigid, she's bubbly, fun, and mischievous.

Treat yo self.

Yes, when I catch my breath, I tell myself that I deserve every treat 😆

Okay I see. Well that's great then. I feel like "house fire" as a description could be interpreted either way.

"house fire"

could be interpreted either way.

I agree with you,😁 and that's why I sometimes don't use idioms. I would have thought otherwise too, and I trusted my interpretation based on hearing others use it, already knowing what the relationship they were referring to. However, I still doubted and had to look it up to confirm just now.

Seriously, though, if I had not heard the term before and it was a quiz to save my life, I would have guessed that it meant negative 🤣

Oh thanks for sharing your family with us. It is so nice of you to spend the entire holiday days with your mother-in-law. I bet that is just what she needed. I wish her both a happy birthday and New Year's Day.

Five Guys we have those here, a shake and hot dog 😋 I ate at one a few weeks back. I had a shake and burger. Had a few too many of the free peanuts before hand. Only some of them offer them due to covid.

Take care and Happy New Years to you and the rest of your family 🎉

Heya 👋
Happy New Year to you!🎉
Yes, I'm so happy that the right time has come for Gill and me to get to know each other. She's a character and a half. More than a handful, but bubbly and entertaining.

We discovered Five Guys when we arrived in the city late and wanted a quick bite, and I've been back many times. I have a thing for hotdogs, but I should try their burgers.

Do you have fireworks in your city? Gill told me tonight that not all states were permitted to have fireworks when she lived there.

Yup their is fireworks that some big companies will set off. Even us citizens can set off here during certain hours. I might watch if I'm still awake, definitely not setting any off 😂 I think a few States can't but don't quote me on it. I know some citizens in certain States can't.

Do they offer free peanuts at Five Guys there?

I might still be up, but I have no idea if I will be able to view any fireworks from my place.
When I lived in the Philippines, it was always fun to sit by the pool overlooking the sea, to watch the fireworks across the Bay. They always started early, and by midnight, there was none left 😆

Do they offer free peanuts at Five Guys there?

I will have to check next time I go back, cos I didn't notice anything the last time I've been there.

Oh I bet being near the sea or on an island the firework show would be amazing. I've been on a lake on a boat during a show before but I bet your experience trumps that. 🤔 I wonder why not save for midnight, hehe

Yeah, it was amazing to watch the lights, and we all laughed knowing that they were just impatient 😆

Fireworks are going off around me, but I don't have a decent camera with me.

Happy New Year again... officially my time 🍾

Hey Nikki 😍
Happy New Year, and wishing you lots of positive changes for 2024. I appreciate your lovely message, and you for being caring and kind even through adversity.
(I believe @tennt had reached out to me on one of my posts, hello you and happy new year to you too.)
The last 3 months of last year were stressful for me Nikki, and I'm hoping to restore some stability in my life.
I hope that you're doing well healthwise, and I'll see you around as always ❤️🤗

Oh... sorry to hear this, Milly :(

We go through these times though. We like to say it's "life" or "the system" or "the world". But it's we humans.

Best to see things clearly and without judgement, in my experience, and accept them and work around them. Or without them!

You are amazing and awesome and a true gem of a woman. Only love and respect. Stay you. Despite whatever is unfolding around you! ❤️💪

I wonder if the stray cat is really a stray? I've had many a cat visit me for a warm when their owners are out. They use and abuse you lol.

It's funny how people can be different and still get on. I have two female friends who like their make up and their painted nails. I can't think of anything worse but we get on fine. I'm glad you survived General Gill.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year 🍾

Haha! Gill asked a few neighbours if anyone owned the cat, but everyone said they had only seen her. There is student housing close by and many students have cats and abandon them when they leave. She sleeps on the couch every night, stays in the garden most times, and then disappears through the hedges and we have no idea where she goes.

Gill is more than a handful, and it's best not to get into a conflict with her 😆
We spent some time looking through a bird book trying to figure out if, and what kind of white gulls were in your recent photography lovers post... They are grey wings and we wondered if they were young and if the features were not fully developed.

If you mean the black-headed gulls, after summer, they get their winter plumage and their head turns white but with a black spot on either side of their head.

At the moment, we are having an influx of waxwings, so you might see them in your area at some point.
