A Fixed And Growth Mindset

The mind is a very powerful aspect of our body that controls the way our lives turn out to be and this is why it is being trained to what we want it to be and for we to become who we want to become. Our minds are controlled by our thoughts and how we do things, it reflects on the way we live our lives so what mindset do you have? Do you have the fixed or growth mindset?

The fixed mindset is either good at something or don't know how to. These set of people don't try to learn what they don't know, they stick to what they already know and even try to prove that they're too good in that area so they don't need to learn more. The growth mindset can learn to do anything they want, they just keep learning to be better.

The fixed mindset sees failure as a limit to abilities. One with a fixed mindset continues to fail because loss of confidence from past failures, they get easily scared to try out something they've once failed in. But the growth mindset sees every failure as an opportunity to grow. Someone once said "My failures makes me best at what I do" Failures are meant to bring out your best because no one wants to fail repeatedly so you'd work even harder and think better after a failure.

While a fixed mindset fears and hates challenges, a growth mindset takes any challenges on it's way, learn from it, accept it's mistakes and grow through the challenges. The fixed mindset runs away from challenges which is like "Accepting defeat even before going for a fight". Fear is a huge factor that has stopped so many minds from growing, once it is eliminated, a growth mindset is bound to be present.

A fixed mindset is jealous by the success of others. They are always busy looking at others success and talk about people's success forgetting to do something about their own success. Some would find ways to discourage a growing or a successful mind because they are afraid to try what a growth mind is trying. The growth mindset is inspired by the success of others, there's no doubt about that.

A fixed mindset refuses to grow because it never wishes to leave its comfort zone to try new things. They stick to the old methods of doing things and keep getting the same result but would not worry about it because they are too scared to fail. The growth mindset wants to learn every new thing that it comes across because that way, it just keeps growing.

In essence, a fixed mindset would reflect a bad personality and so would a growth mindset reflect a great personality, we've just got to train our minds to grow in every area of our lives and not remain in our comfort.

What's your mindset? Or is there a mindset that's neither a fixed nor a growth mindset... What would such mindset be? Just wondering.

Thanks for reading!!!

I never considered myself as having a "growth" mindset, but you defined it really well, and I see that is usually my way of thinking. I think what you referred to as a fixed mindset is also what I called "self-limiting beliefs" in my most recent post (life is not a choose your own adventure).

I like what you wrote about failure. "My failures make me best at what I do." It reminded me of the time my boss told me years ago that he never worried when I was going to do an operation on a big server (we were UNIX systems administrators on large servers that were very important and worth a lot of money.)

I was surprised because I worried like crazy. He explained that this was WHY he did not worry. He said with some other people who worked there, they did not worry, so he did. With me, I worried like crazy. Then, as a result of my worry, I carefully read what needed to be done. I prepared. I ensured I had a backup of the entire server in case things went haywire. That way, worst case scenario, I could just back out of the whole thing. Worry was my strength. It's funny how worry and failure can be positives like that.

Thank you for the thought-provoking post!

What an awesome feedback from you, I really appreciate it.
I've learnt something new from you today, there are positives in worries and failures

I’m trying to think of where a fixed mindset can be an advantage but it’s hard for me to think of one, perhaps because the world is continually evolving and we as humans are subject to change and change is constant, so having a fixed mindset doesn’t just sound right. Nice write, we need to constantly remind ourselves of these little things because sometimes we actually forget, thanks for sharing.

😂 I also tried thinking of that and I smiled at myself because the word "Fixed" said it all already, there's no good thing about it.

We've just got to keep that growth mindset and keep growing till whenever... Learning never ends, a fixed mindset ends its learning 😒

I hope that I have a growth mindset instead of a fixed one so that I can learn continually, and not get stuck in one way of doing or seeing things.

This is a well-written post on an awesome topic! I love writing about this topic myself and if you get me going I'll go on for hours on this topic...lol!

What you point out through this whole post is absolutely true. On the one hand, you have positive people who are willing to accept a challenge and see it as an opportunity to grow.

On the other hand, you have negative people who use past failures as an excuse not to try again.

At the end of the day, it's all about a decision. You have to decide how to think about these things. And while many believe that they cannot help what they think or how they think, it is possible to change the way you think indeed.

I can carry on about that, but that is a whole post by itself...lol!

Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

I got here via @dreemport.

Carol Dweck, Stanford psychologist said of growth mindset that it "creates a passion for learning rather than a hunger for approval". Someone who has the belief that their intelligence is immutable and fixed will not strive to challenge themselves, but rather seek approval to reinforce their known intellectual ability. Whereas one with a growth mindset sees human potential as undefined and capable of growth into any area if one simply accepts challenges and applies effort. What you say about how a fixed mindset stifles intellectual development is so true as a result. We make our own prisons for ourselves when we lack self-belief. We all have the key, some of us are either not capable of using it or just too afraid to turn it in the lock. Another meaningful post from you @merit.ahama merit.ahama. What a great contribution, it seem like you read books a lot or how do you know words said by some persons?

Well, I agree with your last words. People are either not capable of using the keys they possess or too afraid to.

Thanks for your comment, it's very much appreciated

Sorry, just realised I forgot to add the source in my comment. I credited Carol Dweck with the quote but here's the article it appears in if you fancy some further reading. Whenever I read an article that makes me think, I like to read a bit further on the topic and pull together my understanding with that of the author whose work I am appreciating :-) Fixed v Growth: The two basic mindsets that shape our lives ... I do have a pretty good memory for things and read a fair bit, but I'm not a font of quotes for everything in life ha ha 😄When i read something that gels with how I am thinking about something, I like to expand on it in my own words and try to give my own analogy/views

Fixing one's mindset is not a good way to live life and neither is being super flexible. A balanced must be maintained in order to have a meaningful life.

Growth mindset it is.
Most fixed mindset is caused by fear .fear of failing if they try but then you addressed it already
" my failures make me best at what I do" corrections are made from failure only when we try.
I find this post inspiring.
