Hola, lindas personitas. Realmente tengo bastante tiempo sin escribir por acá y han pasado un montón de cosas, pero sinceramente no quiero centrarme en tantas cosas que ahora están en el pasado. Quisiera enfocar mis energías en lo que está en mi presente, y volver a conectar con esta comunidad era algo que estaba en mi lista de prioridades.

En esta oportunidad quería compartirles sobre una película que ha dado mucho de qué hablar: La Odisea. Uno de mis primeros posts en esta plataforma trataba justamente de un musical sobre este poema. Soy muy fan de la mitología desde hace muchísimo tiempo y, cuando me enteré de que estaban grabando esta adaptación, no pude estar más emocionada.

Hi, lovely people. It’s been quite a while since I last wrote here, and a lot has happened, but honestly, I don’t want to dwell on so many things that are now in the past. I’d like to focus my energy on what’s happening in my present, and reconnecting with this community was something high on my list of priorities.

This time, I wanted to share with you a movie that’s been the talk of the town: The Odyssey. One of my very first posts on this platform was actually about a musical based on this epic poem. I’ve been a huge fan of mythology for a very long time, and when I found out they were filming this adaptation, I couldn’t have been more excited.

Realmente La Odisea de Homero tiene muchísimos años, así que siento que no hay nada que pueda spoilear que ya no se haya discutido muchísimo antes. Pero sí hay un montón de cosas curiosas detrás de la producción de la película que me parecieron muy interesantes, así que primero les explicaré brevemente la historia y luego destacaré esos puntos.

La historia nos narra el largo viaje de Odiseo de regreso a su hogar, la isla de Ítaca, luego de la guerra de Troya. Y aunque la premisa suena muy simple, porque ¿qué tan difícil puede ser regresar?, pues para esa época, sin Google Maps, realmente era bien difícil. Además, Odiseo la verdad es que tiene muchísima sal (mucha mala suerte), porque le pasó de todo, de todo, antes de siquiera poder estar medio cerca de su hogar: desde encuentros con cíclopes y sirenas hasta ser transformados en animales por una bruja.

Homer’s The Odyssey is truly very, very old, so I don’t think there’s anything I can spoil that hasn’t already been discussed at length before. But there are plenty of fascinating behind-the-scenes details about the film’s production that I found very interesting, so first I’ll briefly explain the story and then highlight those points.

The story tells of Odysseus’s long journey back home to the island of Ithaca after the Trojan War. And although the premise sounds very simple—after all, how hard can it be to go home?—back then, without Google Maps, it was actually really difficult. Plus, Odysseus really had a lot of bad luck, because he went through absolutely everything—and I mean everything—before he could even get anywhere near home: from encounters with Cyclopes and sirens to being turned into animals by a witch.

Su esposa, Penélope, era presionada por los nobles para que eligiera un nuevo esposo y entregara el reino (porque sí, Odiseo era rey de Ítaca). Muchos creían que Odiseo había muerto y, como su hijo Telémaco aún no estaba listo para asumir ese cargo, querían hacer lo posible para sacarlos de ahí. Pero Penélope retrasa esta decisión haciendo una promesa: escogerá a un nuevo esposo cuando termine de tejer un sudario (que es como una tela para cubrir a los difuntos como señal de respeto). Sin embargo, cada noche ella deshace en secreto todo lo que ha tejido, manteniendo la esperanza de que su esposo pueda regresar a casa.

And while Odysseus was going through his very own odyssey to return home across the sea, things weren’t all that great in Ithaca. His wife, Penelope, was being pressured by the nobles to choose a new husband and hand over the kingdom (because yes, Odysseus was king of Ithaca). Many believed that Odysseus had died, and since his son Telemachus wasn’t yet ready to take on that role, they wanted to do everything possible to get rid of them. But Penelope delays this decision by making a promise: she’ll choose a new husband once she finishes weaving a shroud (which is a cloth used to cover the deceased as a sign of respect). However, every night she secretly unravels everything she’s woven, holding onto the hope that her husband might return home.

Datos que me parecieron interesantes:

La película se filmó por completo con cámaras IMAX, que ofrecen una calidad de imagen increíble y una experiencia mucho más inmersiva. El director llevaba muchísimo tiempo queriendo grabar con ellas, pero antes era prácticamente imposible porque son muy grandes y hacen bastante ruido. Sin embargo, se desarrolló una nueva generación de cámaras un poco más silenciosa, y eso hizo posible que toda la película pudiera rodarse en ese formato.

También se evitó usar efectos especiales siempre que fue posible. Se construyeron la mayoría de los escenarios y hasta el barco donde navegaba Odiseo era real, llamado Draken. Todo el elenco que interpretaba a la tripulación tuvo que aprender a izar velas y remar de verdad.

Facts I found interesting:

The film was shot entirely with IMAX cameras, which offer incredible image quality and a much more immersive experience. The director had wanted to shoot with them for a very long time, but it used to be practically impossible because they’re very large and make quite a bit of noise. However, a new generation of slightly quieter cameras was developed, making it possible to shoot the entire film in that format.

They also avoided using special effects whenever possible. Most of the sets were built, and even the ship Odysseus sailed on was real—it was called the Draken. The entire cast playing the crew had to learn how to hoist sails and row for real.

Cada toma tenía un límite de aproximadamente tres minutos. Las cámaras IMAX utilizan rollos de película que se agotan muy rápido, así que el equipo entrenó para cambiar la película en tiempo récord y no perder tiempo entre tomas.

La escena del inframundo se filmó en Islandia durante el "sol de medianoche", ese fenómeno en el que el sol prácticamente no se oculta durante 24 horas. Les pareció el escenario perfecto para representar el reino de los muertos.

Each take was limited to approximately three minutes. IMAX cameras use film reels that run out very quickly, so the crew trained to change the film in record time and avoid wasting time between takes.

The underworld scene was filmed in Iceland during the “midnight sun,” that phenomenon where the sun barely sets for 24 hours. They felt it was the perfect setting to depict the realm of the dead.

A muchos les tomó por sorpresa la aparición de Travis Scott en el elenco interpretando a un poeta, pero este detalle me pareció muy significativo. En la época de La Odisea, los poemas eran cantados por bardos, así que su personaje funciona como un equivalente moderno a los raperos de hoy: personas que cuentan historias, transmiten hazañas y construyen memoria a través de la música y la palabra.

Hay muchos más datos curiosos sobre esta película y, sobre todo, muchísimas críticas, porque al ser una adaptación mucha gente tenía una expectativa diferente. Lo que les puedo recomendar es que se den la oportunidad de verla y calificarla ustedes mismos.

Many were taken by surprise by Travis Scott’s appearance in the cast as a poet, but I found this detail very significant. In the time of The Odyssey, poems were sung by bards, so his character serves as a modern equivalent to today’s rappers: people who tell stories, recount feats, and preserve memory through music and words.

There are many more interesting facts about this movie and, above all, a lot of criticism, because since it’s an adaptation, many people had different expectations. What I can recommend is that you give it a chance and judge it for yourselves.
