Forest flies, or often also called rat flies, are a type of insect that belongs to the Muscidae family. They are usually found in forests or areas with lots of vegetation, such as gardens or fields with dense grass.

Forest flies vary in size, from about 5 to 8 mm. They have a small body with transparent wings, and long antennae. Forest flies have a body color that is generally dark, with varying patterns.

The main food of forest flies is nectar and pollen from flowers, so they have potential as pollinators for several plants. However, they are also known as weedy insects
