Modern Houses

I'm not a particular particular fan of that type of architecture. First of all, the eaves are too short and too narrow. They should hang a longer distance over the walls on every side. The siding is wooden and exposed to the rain throughout the year. This climate is unforgiving as the annual temperature range is from -30 C to +30 C.

The dark color makes the building very hot during heat waves in the summer. The highest recorded temperature in July 2021 was +34 C. This summer it has got almost as hot as it has during most summers in the past decade. Heatwaves are predicted to become more common in the near future. There is no shade as there are no taller buildings and almost no trees nearby. The occupants must either endure or turn up their A/C to the max, which will consume a lot of power.

What about reduced heating costs? The dark color does not reduce heating costs in the winter because the sun is so low that it has little in the way of warming effect anyway. Only on cold spring days when the sun his already high can the dark color help retain some heat during the day but the dark color also causes the building to radiate heat effectively during the night.

There is no benefit whatsoever in dark sidings at all. Traditionally, wooden buildings are painted red in this country. In the 20th century, all colors have been used but the dark gray and black are distinctly a fashion born only in the 2010s.

My attitude tends to be progressive and even futuristic in most things. But in architecture few things can beat centuries of evolution based on experience.
