En los primeros días del año se presentó una situación bastante irregular en Venezuela específicamente en el estado Yaracuy en dónde un grupo de personas para celebrar la llegada del año nuevo ingirieron un tipo de bebida alcohólica adulterada con metanol el cual les causó la muerte a la mayoría de ellas, fueron aproximadamente 16 personas intoxicadas y a más de 10 les causó la muerte.

El metanol es un tipo de sustancia química utilizada en la industria para la elaboración de diferentes productos entre ellos: combustible, productos utilizados para la limpieza del hogar, entre otros. Ciertamente no es apto para el consumo humano es altamente tóxico para el organismo dependiendo la cantidad que pueda ser ingerida o inhalada.

Está sustancia al ser ingerida a nivel digestivo degrada sus producto en ácido formico y que al distribuirse por todo el organismo genera efectos graves como lo es a nivel del sistema nervioso central, pulmón, corazón, riñones y en el metabolismo los efectos comienzan aparecer posterior a las 24 horas de ingerir la sustancia, cabe destacar a pesar de no ser una urgencia tan frecuente presenta un alto riesgo de morbi-mortalidad.

El riesgo de mortalidad va a depender de la cantidad ingerida, la principal manifestación clínica en el paciente es la alteración del nivel de consciencia se ve reflejada en la somnolencia, alteración pupilar, confusión, delirio, convulsión por otra parte a nivel digestivo se presenta dolor abdominal, náuseas, vomitos, insuficiencia renal, daño hepático y pulmonar.

La atención al paciente intoxicado por metanol debe ser inmediata a través de la infusión de líquidos, monitoreo hemodinámico, administración de oxígeno, la intubación si es necesaria, en algunos casos puede realizarse hemodiálisis para así eliminar parte del producto tóxico, así como la infusión de fármacos de elección por el médico, el paciente puede sobrevivir el algunos casos pero también hay un elevado riesgo de mortalidad.
