Greetings to all, today I want to share with you one of the activities that begins Holy Week, the Palm Sunday Celebration.

This year was celebrated on April 2, 2023 and for the first time I decided to attend the Chacao Municipality, the smallest of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas in Venezuela, where every year they offer the people of Caracas a program where the members of the community take great care in the organization to give the best to all attendees.

When I arrived at 9:45 am the Procession of Jesus in the Garden had already left to walk the streets with @cargadoresdesantosdechacao, I found them when they were passing through Mohedano Avenue and arriving at Francisco de Miranda Avenue there was a musical group that played sacred music while the images were going through the place. Many people could already be seen with their palms in hand.

I continued my way to the Plaza Bolivar of Chacao, there was a stage destined for the mass to be held outside the San José de Chacao Church, which due to its size and after the pandemic, it did not have the capacity to accommodate all those who approached and that was when the Mayor's Office supported the proposal to do it in the square.

The first thing I did was to ask where they were giving the palms, which are traditionally brought by Los Palmeros de Chacao @palmeroschacaooficial I arrived at the Colegio Sagrado Corazón de Jesús which is located at the corner of the church, I made a queue until I was attended by one of the palmeros located on the corner.

Relating a little of what is the descent of the palm leaves, this is done by a group of people faithfully and with the commitment inherited even from generation to generation, on the eve of Palm Sunday. They go to the Sabas Nieves sector in the El Avila - Waraira Repano National Park and every year they collect the palm fronds that will be distributed to the faithful and blessed during the Palm Sunday masses.

The story goes that in 1770 with the arrival of the yellow fever epidemic in Caracas, the slaves and laborers of the sector motivated by religious beliefs and at the request of the father of the church went up in search of the palms to commemorate the arrival of Jesus, that is why every year the palmeros do it to fulfill the promise of Father Mohedano.

The descent of Los Palmeros de Chacao is a tradition with more than 200 years and were declared in 2019 as Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). They are accompanied by people from different parts of the capital who go through the streets doing various cultural activities in a tour to the vicinity of the San José de Chacao Church where they are kept.

After having the palms I entered the church, where several people were praying and making their petitions, I stayed there for a while, I could see the program that was placed in one of the exits and then when they announced the beginning of the mass, I went to the square to look for a place.

I located myself near the statue of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, a place where I could take shelter from the intense sun of 10:30 in the morning, it was also a good place because it was in the front.

During the mass there are two important moments, the procession of the palms and the reading of the Gospel of St. Matthew.

This feast is celebrated by the parishioners commemorating the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, where the crowd recognized him as the Messiah exclaiming "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!". Accepting him as the son of God and the Messiah. It is also a way of thanking Jesus for his sacrifice. Father Reinaldo Gamez blessed the palms and officiated the mass.

Listening to the father who commented after the readings, that the people acclaimed Jesus and then condemned him, behaviors that without judging the people of that time lead me to reflect on the reasons for the massive change of attitude.

Finally we received the blessing and the attendees began to leave. One of the things that caught my attention was the cheerful and collaborative atmosphere, where the public sector, merchants and businesses, the community, youth groups, religious groups and the church joined forces, all so that the ceremony could be successfully fulfilled for dozens of people.

I arrived home with my branches and my daughter, always attentive, made some crosses with the help of youtube tutorials, we placed one in the house and the others to give to the family.

Este año se celebró el pasado 2 de abril de 2023 y yo por primera vez decidí asistir al Municipio Chacao, el más pequeño del Área Metropolitana de Caracas en Venezuela, donde todos los años ofrecen a los caraqueños una programación en el que los miembros de la comunidad se esmeran en la organización para dar lo mejor a todos los asistentes.

Cuando llegue a las 9:45 am ya había salido la Procesión de Jesús en el Huerto a recorrer las calles con @cargadoresdesantosdechacao, los encontré cuando pasaban por la Av. Mohedano y llegando a la Av. Francisco de Miranda se encontraba un grupo musical que interpretaban música sacra mientras las imágenes recorrían el lugar. Se podía ver ya a muchas personas con sus palmas en mano.

Yo seguí mi camino hasta la Plaza Bolívar de Chacao, allí estaba una tarima destinada para que la misa se realizara a las afuera de la Iglesia San José de Chacao que debido a su tamaño y después de la pandemia, la misma no tenía capacidad para alojar a todos los que se acercaban y fue cuando la Alcaldía apoyo la propuesta de hacerlo en la plaza.

Lo primero que hice fue preguntar dónde estaban dando las palmas, las cuales son traídas tradicionalmente por Los Palmeros de Chacao @palmeroschacaooficial Llegue al Colegio Sagrado Corazón de Jesús que se encuentra a la esquina de la iglesia, hice una colita hasta que fui atendida por uno de los palmeros ubicados en la esquina.

Relatando un poco de que trata la bajada de la palma, esto lo hace grupo de personas fielmente y con el compromiso heredado incluso de generación en generación, en víspera del Domingo de Ramos. Van al sector de Sabas Nieves en el Parque Nacional El Avila – Waraira Repano y recogen cada año las hojas de palma que serán distribuidas a los fieles y bendecidas en las misas del Domingo de Ramos.

La historia cuenta que en 1770 con la llegada de la epidemia de la fiebre amarilla en Caracas, los esclavos y peones del sector motivados por las creencias religiosas y por petición del padre de la iglesia subieron en busca de las palmas para rememorar la llegada de Jesús, es por eso que los palmeros todos los años lo hacen para cumplir con la promesa del Padre Mohedano.

La bajada de Los Palmeros de Chacao es una tradición con más de 200 años y fueron declarados en el 2019 como Patrimonio Cultural e Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (Unesco). Junto a ellos les acompañan personas de diferentes partes de la capital que van por las calles haciendo diversas actividades culturales en un recorrido hasta las cercanías de la Iglesia San José de Chacao donde las guardan.

Luego de tener las palmas entre a la iglesia, donde estaban varias personas haciendo sus oraciones y peticiones, me quede allí un rato, pude ver la programación que estaba puesta en una de las salidas y luego cuando anunciaron el inicio de la misa, me fui a la plaza a buscar un lugar.

Me ubique cerca de la estatua del Libertador Simón Bolívar, lugar donde podía resguardarme del intenso sol de las 10:30 de la mañana, además era un buen lugar porque quedaba en todo el frente.

Durante la misa hay dos momentos de relevancia, la procesión de las palmas y la lectura del Evangelio de San Mateo.

Esta festividad es celebrada por los feligreses conmemorando la entrada de Jesús en Jerusalén, donde la multitud lo reconocía como el Mesías exclamando "¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!". Aceptándolo como hijo de Dios y como Mesías. También es una manera de agradecer a Jesús por su sacrificio. El Padre Reinaldo Gamez bendijo las palmas y oficio la misa.

Escuchando al padre que nos comenta luego de las lecturas, que el pueblo aclamo a Jesús y luego lo condeno, comportamientos que sin juzgar a las personas de aquella época me llevan a la reflexión de las razones del cambio de actitud masiva.

Finalmente recibimos la bendición y los asistentes comenzaron a retirarse. Una de las cosas que me llamo la atención fue el ambiente alegre y colaborativo, donde unen esfuerzos el sector público, los comerciantes y empresas, la comunidad, los grupos juveniles, los grupos religiosos y la iglesia, todo para que se pueda cumplir con éxito la ceremonia para la decenas de personas.

Llegue a casa con mi ramas y mi hija, siempre atenta, elaboro unas cruces con ayuda de los tutoriales de youtube, colocamos una en la casa y las otras para regalarlas a la familia.
