Today I was distracted to wash clothes, when suddenly in the basket located next to the washing machine I was surprised by a mantis. It seemed to me a large animal, compared to others of its species that are more common to see, which are usually green. This specimen measured between 8 and 10 centimeters, approximately. Its elongated body is light brown, a beige color, ideal for camouflaging itself among dry branches in nature, I believe.
I identified it as soon as I saw it due to the position adopted by its front legs, as it had its arms together, as if in a "praying" position. This is exactly why this type of insect is called a praying mantis. My mom calls them "blessed foot". Another defining characteristic is the triangular shape of its head, where a pair of large eyes stands out.
Once I observed it, I went to get my phone to take a couple of pictures. I was very careful not to mistreat it, nor to use the flash because I think that light could cause damage to any living being of those dimensions.
Seeing it does not scare me, because since I was a child I have been used to seeing them in the garden. However, there was a moment when being so close with the phone the mantis stretched its front legs to try to climb over the phone. That scared me a little, just imagining that the spikes on its legs were going to touch me.
I managed to capture several photographs that I liked quite a bit. The position and the slow movements of the mantis played in my favor. Once I finished photographing it, I looked for an object for it to climb so I could take it to a green area outside the house, where it could be safe and could get its food. It was easy to do. I took her and made her climb on one of the flowers in the community garden next to the street. She stayed there quietly, trying to move from one flower to another.
I was reading on the National Geographic website something that I found very curious. And the fact is that, besides devouring other insects, praying mantises also record as victims some birds, among which hummingbirds stand out. Who would have thought that such a small and even harmless insect would be able to hunt such prey for food.
However, it is not a dangerous insect or one that could cause any harm to humans.

Hoy iba distraída a lavar ropa, cuando de repente en la cesta ubicada junto a la lavadora me sorprendió una mantis. Me pareció un animal de gran tamaño, en comparación a otras de su especie que son más comunes de ver, las cuales suelen ser de color verde. Este ejemplar medía entre 8 y 10 centímetros, aproximadamente. Su cuerpo alargado es de color marrón claro, una tonalidad beige, ideal para camuflarse entre ramas secas de la naturaleza, según considero.
La identifiqué en cuanto la vi debido a la posición que adoptan sus patas delanteras, pues llevaba juntos los brazos, como en posición para "orar". Justo por ello, a este tipo de insectos le llaman mantis religiosa. Mi mamá les llama "pie bendito". Otra característica que la define es la forma triangular de su cabeza, donde destaca un par de grandes ojos.
Una vez la observé fui a buscar mi teléfono para tomarle un par de fotografías. Eso si, con mucho cuidado de no maltratarla, ni de usar el flash pues creo que esa luz le podría causar daño a cualquier ser vivo de esas dimensiones.
Verla no me causa miedo, porque desde pequeña he estado acostumbrada a verlas en el jardín. Sin embargo, hubo un momento en que al estar tan cerca con el teléfono el mantis estiró sus patas delanteras para tratar de trepar sobre el móvil. Eso me asustó un poco, de solo imaginar que las púas que posee en sus patas me iban a tocar.
Logré capturar varias fotografías que me gustaron bastante. La posición y los movimientos lentos de la mantis jugaron a mi favor. Una vez terminé de fotografiarla busqué un objeto para que trepara y así poder llevarla a un área verde fuera de la casa, donde puediera estar segura y pudiera conseguir su alimento. Fue facil hacerlo. La llevé e hice que trepara sobre una de las flores del jardín comunitario que está junto a la calle. Allí se quedó tranquila, intentando pasar de una flor a otra.
Estuve leyendo en la página National Geographic algo que me resultó muy curioso. Y es que, las mantis religiosas además de devorar otros insectos también registran como víctimas algunas aves, entre las que se destacan los colibrís. Quién diría que un insecto tan pequeño, e incluso inofensivo, fuera capaz de cazar semejantes presas para alimentarse.
Sin embargo, no es un insecto peligroso ni que pudiera causarnos daño alguno a los seres humanos.
