Baby Powder - A Freewrite

Bitch.png

I hear baby powder and my eyes start rolling in my head, I start seeing red and steam is coming out of my ears, mouth - every single one of my hairs are standing up straight puffing steam of anger into the air. Hissing. I can't hear my own thoughts anymore because of all that anger, disgust, unbelieve rising up in me, and taking over.
Whey?
Aren't babies cute?
YES!!!!
Babies are super cute and that is why I am so angry. So very angry
It was just a few days - maybe a week ago, that a baby powder lawsuit was finally settled in the US. You know that Brand starting with a couple of J s that everyone and their grandmother - literally - was buying and thinking they were doing a good thing for their babies?
And not just babies. Many adults were buying it too. Using it on their skin, under their armpits, even in the neither regions to prevent sweat and smells that come along with sweat.
Some would say it is the body's perfumes - but that is another freewrite.
So, did you know that that baby powder everyone has been sprinkling around, getting absorbed in their skin, breathing in - you know, getting it everywhere on and in our bodies -has Asbestos in it?
Did you know?
ASBESTOS!!!
Yes, the stuff that kills you. And makes you sick for sure.
And do you know why I am so stinking angry?
Yup, it is causing ovarian cancer and who knows what else.
My oldest son is almost 38 years old. And I was told then by those in the know that baby powder is bad for kids and everyone else. I never used it.
Of course, like with so many things, people thought I was off the rocker, strange, hippie - whatever. It took 38 years for government agencies - FDA - to finally do their job and protect the people. They are really good at denying permission for things that are actually good for us but a product from a big company can do harm for a very long time.
And you know what pisses me off even more?
J&J will keep selling their Asbestos laden product in other countries - like everywhere in Africa and wherever else they can.
THAT is just WRONG!!!

Wow, I hadn't heard about that lawsuit! I don't remember if I used baby powder on my babies. It was too long ago. I think maybe I used cornstarch instead.

I used nothing - worked pretty well :)
Just cleaned their little but with water (and soap when necessary) :)

Thank goodness I brought my kids up in the bush and relied on good ole Vitamin D from the main supplier , Sol :)

Sure makes you wonder if those government agencies have our best interests in mind right now, no? I assume they do not. I think to assume anything else if quite foolish. Great freewrite

I don't think they have for the most part. It is actually really interesting to hear about how the FDA got started. Can't tell you the whole story of the top of my head, but it was in a very interesting documentary.
It did have to do with supporting big industry - or rather, getting them to be big
If I remember the title, I will tell you.

I've been hunting in vain for the documentary you have in mind. Maybe this...?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is the most powerful regulatory agency in the world. How did the FDA become so influential? And how exactly does it wield its extraordinary power? Carpenter traces the history of FDA regulation of pharmaceuticals, revealing how the agency's organizational reputation has been the primary source of its power, yet also one of its ultimate constraints.

Stacey... SKIM... skip around... fast-forward... I never watch entire videos of some guy just talking!

I try to do that, but I keep having to stop, rewind, listen to something I only half listened to. Takes longer!!! This is very technical and over my head, more so if I don't pay close attention. I love transcripts!!!

Transcripts. Yes. I read so much faster than people talk!
You are more diligent than I am. Dare I confess how often I skim and fast-forward on monologues?

I KNOW you skimmed this one! I can only barely get the gist of the math. I had to give up. I'd need a full semester of a college level statistics class, and calculus before that, before I had any idea of what he is saying. Not for sissies this video.

It is so crazy that we think we are doing the right thing...
And that so many ingredients that are forbidden in Europe to be used in cosmetics because they cause cancer are legal here...

Right?? Everybody keeps getting skin cancer and blaming it on the sun...the sun gives us vitamin d which fights cancer. Maybe...just maybe it is all the cleaners and lotions and soaps that we blindly trust.
