Since time immemorial there have been people clinging to the past, human beings who, due to ignorance, arrogance or convenience, remain anchored to a thought, an idea, a doctrine... people who refuse to "lift anchor" leaving them with no possibility of advancing and to discover new seas. Fanaticism, from every point of view, is retrograde, archaic. Always staying the same is like anchoring a boat in a small landlocked lake. Stopping the march, closing your eyes and ears to reality or to the new, ignoring the signs of the times, is to condemn yourself to darkness and die without being dead.

In the Gospel of Saint Mark 2, 18-22, a situation similar to that stated in the previous paragraph is observed, disciples clinging to regulations imposed by the teachers of the law that were not even written in the Law of Moses. In the days of Jesus of Nazareth fasting was practiced twice a week (Luke 18:12)

This way of fasting was not contemplated in the Law, but was an imposition of the Pharisees, so, although it was not against the Law, it was socially frowned upon not to do it.

Jesus of Nazareth was the new, The Good News, for that reason, when asked: “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, and yours don't?” He answers: “How are the guests at a wedding going to fast, while the bridegroom is with them? While the bridegroom is with them, they cannot fast. But the day will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them and then they will fast.

Jesus does not rule out the possibility of fasting when he is not with his disciples, but why would they do it at that time if he was with them? We must remember that fasting, combined with sincere prayer, helps prepare you to receive God's blessings. Fasting is a source of spiritual strength.

A vino nuevo, odres nuevos”.

In today's Gospel, Jesus of Nazareth uses a pedagogical resource to compare the new with the old:

"Nobody puts a patch of new fabric on an old dress, because the patch shrinks and tears the old fabric and makes the tear worse. Nobody puts new wine in old skins, because the wine breaks the skins, the wine would be lost and the skins would be spoiled. To new wine, new skins”.

The old, stiff, and hardened wineskins represent inflexible religious systems that have become obsolete. The new wine represents the new people of God in search of the spirituality to which the Holy Spirit guides them.

A vino nuevo, odres nuevos”.

Palabra del Señor

Gloria a ti Señor Jesús
