[Movie Review] The Devil All the Time || El Diablo a Todas Horas (2020) [ENG/ESP]
Arvin Russell, played by the British actor Tom Holland, is a young man raised by his grandmother after the death years before of his parents: Charlotte, his mother, who dies after suffering from cancer; and Willard, his father, who before the futility of his prayers to save the life of his wife, decides to accompany her in this journey of no return to eternity, by taking his own life with his own hands.
In the home where Arvin's adolescence takes place, besides his grandmother, also live his uncle Earskell and a young girl named Lenora, presumably abandoned some time ago by her parents, whom Arvin loves and protects as if she were his own sister.
Every afternoon after finishing school activities at the local high school, Lenora, a fervent devotee, goes religiously and without fail to visit the grave of her mother, whose body was found buried in the woods in a makeshift grave, a few years after her mysterious disappearance, while Arvin waits for her in his vehicle to take her back home.
Due to health complications, the pastor of the church must abandon his duties before the faithful of the small community, being replaced by his nephew, Reverend Preston Teagardin, giving beginning to a complex story where the lives of abominable characters that inhabit the rural towns of southern Ohio and northeastern West Virginia intertwine, and where religious beliefs, or rather, their distortion, plays a predominant role in the plot.

The Devil All the Time
The Devil All the Time is a 2020 American psychological thriller directed by Antonio Campos, with a screenplay by Campos himself with his brother Paulo Campos, and photographic direction by Lol Crawley.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by American writer Donald Ray Pollock, who also serves as the film's narrator.
After its theatrical release in September 2020, the 138-minute film arrived on the Netflix platform a couple of weeks ago, where it is currently available in its original language and with English and Spanish subtitles.
The main cast includes, among others, the actors:

- Bill Skarsgård, as Willard Russell.
- Riley Keough as Sandy Henderson.
- Jason Clarke, as Carl Henderson.
- Sebastian Stan, as Lee Bodecker.

The plot takes place over a period of two decades, between the last battles in the Pacific during World War II that sought the surrender of the Japanese Empire, and the 1960s, more specifically, the year 1965.
Willard Russell is an American soldier who, during the fighting in the Solomon Islands during the war, witnessed a disturbing event that would haunt him for the rest of his life: In a field they find the body of a compatriot crucified by the Japanese combatants in a position similar to Jesus, however, they realize that he had not died yet, so before the impossibility of taking him down from the cross, and move him to a military base in search of medical assistance to try to save his life, his companions see the need to "sacrifice" him with a coup de grace to save him from further suffering.
Once he returns home, after the victory of the Allies, Willard meets a waitress in a small cafeteria in a rural town on his way home, with whom he falls madly in love, however, he forgot to ask her name, which would serve as a pretext to return some time later. What Willard didn't know is that at that moment in which he discovered love, romance was also born between another couple present in the cafeteria: the waitress Sandy and the photographer Carl.
A few years later, Willard, who had not prayed since the crucifixion episode, decides to do so again by placing an untidy wooden cross in the woods surrounding the house he shares with his wife Charlotte and their nine-year-old son, Arvin. At this makeshift altar, Willard goes every evening to pray after returning from work.
When Charlotte is diagnosed with cancer, Willard's prayers increase for his beloved, going so far as to sacrifice his son's pet, seeking to please God and restore his wife's lost health. Finally, Charlotte dies and Willard, disappointed, decides to take his own life, leaving his son alone and abandoned, who after the macabre discovery of his father's corpse, is sent by the authorities to the house of his grandmother Emma.
It is 1965, and during Arvin's birthday celebration, his uncle Earskell gives him a German gun that his father Willard had brought home from the war. Arvin thanks him for the gesture, stating that "it's the best present I've ever received in my life" and then puts it back in the box in which it was given to him and sets it aside from the table.
Lenora, a teenager who was left in the care of Arvin's grandmother since she was a baby of a few months old, after her parents Helen and the preacher Roy Laferty, did not pick her up; she is a constant victim of bullying by her classmates at the high school she attends, motivated by her religious fervor. Arvin, who loves and protects her as if she were his own sister, decides to take corrective measures, and while Lenora visits the grave of her mother, a mother whom she practically never knew and whose body appeared some years after her disappearance; he looks for the bullies to give them a good beating, to then return to the cemetery to look for his "sister" and go home.
When the local parish priest is forced to retire due to health problems, he is immediately replaced by his nephew, Reverend Preston Teagardin, a discourteous and unsympathetic young man, who will soon reveal himself for what he really is: a monster who will use God and the Faith he preaches as a means to get the sexual favors of the town's teenage girls, no matter what the consequences.
On one occasion, after visiting the cemetery as usual, Lenora, while waiting for Arvin to pick her up, goes to the church, where she meets the reverend, who invites her for a ride in his car. Once in the woods and away from the eyes of the curious, the young reverend convinces the teenager to show herself before the eyes of God, as she came to this world: without clothes, as a sign of her unconditional love for the Creator.
A few weeks later, Lenora discovers that she is pregnant and decides to hide it from her grandmother, her uncle Earskell and Arvin himself, however, she goes to the reverend, who upon hearing the news, decides to deny any carnal contact with the teenager whom he accuses of suffering from delusions.
Disappointed and fearing that the grandmother would throw her out of the house, Lenora decides to take her own life, placing a rope around her neck, but after some reflection she realizes that the grandmother would receive that creature with the same love with which she had arrived there many years before, so she decides to desist from her suicide attempt with the bad luck that she slips before taking off the rope, resulting dead. Once again, tragedy struck.
Once the body of Lenora is buried, Arvin learns from the forensic report that she was pregnant, and decides to take the gun that had belonged to his father Willard to confront the reverend, triggering a series of events, and consequently, the outcome of the film; where are involved a couple of serial killers in the best style of Bonnie and Clyde, who for more than a decade had traveled the roads of the area in search of victims, in addition to the presence of a corrupt police and the inefficiency of the institutions designed to assist the villagers, but above all, and in my opinion the most important thing, how the inhabitants of rural villages far from large urban centers, approach religion from their shortcomings, fears, whims and prejudices, sometimes distorting it for their personal gain.

Personal Appreciation
With respect to the film, I could highlight the following:
It has a good direction and a coherent script from beginning to end, where the consequences of a misunderstood religiosity are exposed, among which stand out the alleged sacrifices, even the offering of animals, that God demands from his faithful to forgive their sins and answer their prayers and prayers.
At times, the plot can be somewhat long and slow, and consequently, heavy; however, the common thread that is maintained throughout the film, allows the viewer's attention to be caught again, waiting for the next scenes to tie up the many loose ends that are presented.
The performances of Tom Holland as Arvin, Robert Pattinson as Reverend Teagardin, and Bill Skarsgård as Willard, are extraordinary, with very well built characters and where much of the plot rests.
The film should not be seen as a frontal attack on God or the church as an institution, but rather as a criticism of the misrepresentation or abuse of religious beliefs and the concept of God, either by exacerbated fanaticism, ignorance or personal gain, by the inhabitants of those villages, based on their own life experiences.
The denouement of the film allows us to know how they relate the stories of all the characters that appear in the plot, and that at the beginning, seem unconnected.
The film is currently available on Netflix, in its original English language or dubbed into Spanish with English and Spanish subtitles.
Finally, I am not a film critic, nor would I describe myself as a cinephile, I am just a person in search of recommendations and who occasionally enjoys movies. Arvin Russell, personaje interpretado por el actor británico Tom Holland, es un joven criado por su abuela tras la muerte años atrás de sus padres: Charlotte su madre, quien muere luego de padecer cancer; y de Willard, su padre, quien ante la inutilidad de sus oraciones para salvar la vida de su mujer, decide acompañarla en este viaje sin retorno a la eternidad, al quitarse la vida con sus propias manos.
En el hogar donde transcurre la adolescencia de Arvin, además de su abuela, también viven su tío Earskell y una joven llamada Lenora, presuntamente abandonada tiempo atrás por sus padres, y a quien Arvin ama y protege como si fuese su propia hermana.
Todas las tardes luego de finalizar las actividades escolares en la secundaria local, Lenora, una ferviente devota, acude religiosamente y sin falta a visitar la tumba de su madre, cuyo cuerpo fue hallado enterrado en el bosque en una improvisada tumba, unos años después de su misteriosa desaparición, mientras Arvin la espera en su vehículo para llevarla de regreso a casa.
Debido a complicaciones de salud, el párroco de la iglesia debe abandonar sus deberes ante los fieles de la pequeña comunidad, siendo sustituido por su sobrino, el reverendo Preston Teagardin, dando inicio a una compleja historia donde se entrecruzan las vidas de abominables personajes que habitan en los pueblos rurales del sur de Ohio y el noreste de Virginia Occidental, y donde las creencias religiosas, o más bien, su distorsión, juega un papel predominante en la trama.

El Diablo a Todas Horas es un thriller psicológico estadounidense del año 2020, que cuenta con la dirección de Antonio Campos, con guión del propio Campos en compañía de su hermano Paulo Campos, y la dirección fotográfica de Lol Crawley.
La cinta está basada en la novela del mismo nombre del escritor estadounidense Donald Ray Pollock, quien también cumple funciones como narrador en la película.
Tras su estreno en las salas de cine en septiembre de 2020, la cinta de 138 minutos de duración, llegó a la plataforma Netflix hace un par de semanas atrás, donde se encuentra disponible actualmente en su idioma original y con subtítulos en inglés y español.

La trama transcurre en un período de dos décadas, entre los últimos combates registrados en el Pacífico durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial que buscaban la rendición del Imperio Japonés, y la década de los 60, más concretamente, el año 1965.
Willard Russell es un soldado estadounidense que durante los combates realizados en las Islas Salomón durante la guerra, presenció un hecho perturbador que le perseguiría durante toda su vida: en un campo encuentran el cuerpo de un compatriota crucificado por los combatientes japoneses en una posición similar a Jesús, sin embargo, se percatan que no había muerto aún, por lo que ante la imposibilidad de bajarlo de la cruz, y trasladarlo a alguna base militar en busca de asistencia médica para tratar de salvarle la vida, sus compañeros se ven en la necesidad de "sacrificarlo" con un tiro de gracia para ahorrarle mayores sufrimientos.
Una vez que retorna a casa, tras la victoria de los aliados, Willard conoce a una camarera en una pequeña cafetería de un pueblo rural camino a su hogar, de la que se enamora perdidamente, sin embargo, olvidó preguntarle su nombre, lo que serviría de pretexto para regresar tiempo después. Lo que no sabía Willard es que en aquel momento en el que descubría el amor, también nacía el romance entre otra pareja presente en la cafetería: la camarera Sandy y el fotógrafo Carl.
Unos años después, Willard, quien desde el episodio de la crucifixión no había vuelto a rezar, decide hacerlo nuevamente, para lo cual coloca una desprolija cruz de madera en el bosque que rodea la casa que comparte con su esposa Charlotte y su hijo de nueve años, Arvin. En este improvisado altar, Willard acude cada tarde a rezar luego de regresar del trabajo.
Charlotte es diagnosticada con cancer, y en consecuencia las plegarias de Willard se acrecientan pidiendo por su amada, llegando al extremo de sacrificar a la mascota de su hijo, buscando agradar a Dios y que éste le restaurara la salud perdida a su mujer. Finalmente, Charlotte muere y Willard decepcionado, decide quitarse la vida, dejando solo y abandonado a su hijo, quien luego del macabro hallazgo del cadáver de su padre, es enviado por las autoridades a la casa de su abuela Emma
Es 1965, y durante la celebración del cumpleaños de Arvin, su tío Earskell le obsequia un arma alemana que su padre Willard había traído consigo de la guerra. Arvin le agradece el gesto afirmando que "es el mejor regalo que he recibido en mi vida" y acto seguido, lo guarda en la caja en el que se lo entregaron y lo aparta de la mesa.
Lenora, una adolescente que quedó al cuidado de la abuela de Arvin desde que era una bebé de pocos meses de edad, luego de que sus padres Helen y el predicador Roy Laferty, no la pasaran a recoger; es víctima constante de bullying por parte de sus compañeros de la secundaria a la que asiste, motivado a su fervor religioso. Arvin, quien la ama y protege como si fuese su propia hermana, decide tomar medidas correctivas, y mientras Lenora visita la tumba de su madre, una madre a la prácticamente no conoció y cuyo cuerpo apareció algunos años después de su desaparición; busca a los acosadores para darles una buena paliza, para luego regresar al cementerio a buscar a su "hermana" y dirigirse a casa.
Cuando el párroco local se ve obligado a retirarse por problemas de salud, inmediatamente es sustituido por su sobrino, el reverendo Preston Teagardin, un joven descortés y antipático, que pronto se revelará como lo que realmente es: un monstruo que usará a Dios y a la Fe que predica como un medio para conseguir los favores sexuales de las adolescentes del pueblo, sin importar las consecuencias.
En una oportunidad, luego de visitar como acostumbraba el cementerio, Lenora mientras espera que Arvin pase a recogerla, acude a la iglesia, donde encuentra al reverendo, quien la invita a dar un paseo en su vehículo. Una vez en el bosque y apartados de las miradas de los curiosos, el joven reverendo convence a la adolescente a mostrarse ante los ojos de Dios, tal como llegó a este mundo: sin ropas, como una muestra de su amor incondicional por El Creador.
Unas semanas después, Lenora descubre que está embarazada y decide ocultarlo a la abuela, al tío Earskell y al propio Arvin, sin embargo, acude con el reverendo, quien al escuchar la noticia, decide negar cualquier contacto carnal con la adolescente a quien acusa de sufrir delirios.
Decepcionada y temiendo que la abuela la echara de la casa, Lenora toma la decisión de quitarse la vida, colocándose una soga al cuello, pero luego de reflexionar se dá cuenta que la abuela recibiría aquella criatura con el mismo amor con el que ella había llegado allí muchos atrás, por lo que decide desistir de su intento de suicidio con la mala suerte que resbala antes de quitarse la cuerda, resultando muerta. Una vez más, la tragedia se hacía presente.
Una vez que el cuerpo de Lenora es sepultado, Arvin se entera por el informe forense que ésta se encontraba embarazada, y decide tomar el arma que había pertenecido a su padre Willard para confrontar al reverendo, desencadenando una serie de sucesos, y en consecuencia, el desenlace de la película; donde están involucrados una pareja de asesinos seriales al mejor estilo de Bonnie y Clyde, quienes por más de una década había recorrido los caminos de la zona en busca de víctimas, además, de la presencia de un policía corrupto y la ineficiencia de las instituciones destinadas a prestar asistencia a los pobladores, pero ante todo, y en mi opinión lo más importante, como los habitantes de los pueblos rurales alejados de los grandes centros urbanos, se aproximan a la religión desde sus carencias, temores, caprichos y prejuicios, tergiversándola en ocasiones, para su provecho personal.
Apreciación Personal
Con respecto a la película, podría destacar lo siguiente:
Cuenta con una buena dirección y un guión coherente de principio a fin, donde se exponen las consecuencias de una religiosidad mal entendida, entre los que destacan los supuestos sacrificios, incluso la ofrenda de animales, que exige Dios a sus fieles para perdonar sus pecados y dar respuesta a sus plegarias y oraciones.
En ocasiones, la trama puede resultar algo larga y lenta, y en consecuencia, pesada; sin embargo, el hilo conductor que se mantiene a todo lo largo de la cinta, permite atrapar nuevamente la atención del espectador que espera en las próximas escenas, atar los múltiples cabos sueltos que se van presentando.
Las actuaciones de Tom Holland en el papel de Arvin, Robert Pattinson como el reverendo Teagardin, y Bill Skarsgård como Willard, son extraordinarias, con personajes muy bien construidos y donde descansa gran parte de la trama.
La cinta no debe ser vista como un ataque frontal a Dios o a la iglesia como institución, sinó más bien, como una crítica a la tergiversación o abuso que, bien sea por fanatismo exacerbado, ignorancia o por provecho personal; hacen los habitantes de aquellos poblados de las creencias religiosas y del concepto del propio Dios, en base a sus propias experiencias de vida.
El desenlace de la película nos permite conocer la forma en que relacionan las historias de todos los personajes que van apareciendo en la trama, y que en un principio, lucen inconexas.
La película está disponible actualmente en Netflix, en su idioma original inglés o doblada al español con subtítulos en inglés y español.
Finalmente, no soy crítico cinematográfico, tampoco podría describirme como cinéfilo, tan solo, soy una persona en búsqueda de recomendaciones y que disfruta ocasionalmente del cine. Yo diría que algo extraña, sin duda, las actuaciones, no son resaltantes, medio enredada diría yo con un final extraño.
No diría mala película, pero tampoco la colocaría en las categoría de buena
En verdad es medio enredada, porque te vá presentando 3 o 4 historias paralelas que no parecen tener conexión entre sí, sinó que hay que esperar hasta el final para saber de que forma se relacionan.

When Tom Holland stars on a movie you should expect a good performance. I've seen a couple of his movies, for example uncharted was a great movie I saw it this year. I'm surprised I'm yet to see this very movie you reviewed, despite the great actors on it. Thanks for the review.
