Robert es el undécimo hijo de un matrimonio afrodescendiente asentado en una población rural del sureño estado de Mississippi. Nace de un relación pasajera que tuvo su madre Julie Ann Dodds, quien se encontraba separada temporalmente de su marido; y un jornalero de nombre Noah Johnson que estaba de paso por el pueblo.

Crece sin conocer su verdadero padre biológico, de quien adoptaría posteriormente su apellido Johnson, cuando su madre le cuenta la verdad.

Desde niño muestra interés por la música, en primer lugar por el arpa y posteriormente por la armónica. Abandona sus estudios motivado, aparentemente, por una afección ocular.

Robert is the eleventh child of a married couple of African descent settled in a rural town in the southern state of Mississippi. He was born of a passing relationship between his mother Julie Ann Dodds, who was temporarily separated from her husband, and a day laborer named Noah Johnson who was passing through town.

He grows up without knowing his real biological father, from whom he would later adopt his last name Johnson, when his mother tells him the truth.

As a child he shows interest in music, first on the harp and later on the harmonica. He abandoned his studies, apparently due to an eye condition.

Se casa en 1929 con una joven de 16 años llamada Virginia Travis, que muere al año siguiente durante el parto. Posteriormente, desconsolado por la pérdida, se refugia en el alcohol y el blues, dedicándose a tocar la guitarra en bares y locales nocturnos sin mucha suerte, incluso, algunos que le conocieron en aquel entonces, confesarían que lo hacía de manera torpe y sin mucha gracia.

Es aquí cuando nace la leyenda del "hombre que vendió su alma al Diablo". Robert se aleja de la escena musical durante algunos meses, y posteriormente a su regreso, sus atributos como cantante, compositor e instrumentista habían mejorado una barbaridad, convirtiéndose en un verdadero prodigio de la guitarra.

He marries in 1929 with a 16 year old girl named Virginia Travis, who dies the following year during childbirth. Later, disconsolate by the loss, he took refuge in alcohol and blues, playing the guitar in bars and nightclubs without much luck, even some who knew him at that time, would confess that he did it awkwardly and without much grace.

This is when the legend of the "man who sold his soul to the Devil" was born. Robert left the music scene for a few months, and upon his return, his attributes as a singer, composer and instrumentalist had improved tremendously, becoming a true prodigy of the guitar.

Se dice que en la encrucijada o actual intersección de la autopista 61 con la 49 en Clarksdale, Mississipi; Robert Johnson vendió su alma al Diablo a cambio de tocar blues mejor que nadie.

Habría esperado en el cruce hasta la medianoche con la guitarra en sus manos. It is said that at the crossroads or actual intersection of Highway 61 and Highway 49 in Clarksdale, Mississippi; Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for playing blues better than anyone else.

He would have waited at the intersection until midnight with the guitar in his hands. Then, the Devil himself would have appeared to him and, after promising him that he would master the guitar like no one else, would explain that he only had to gently glide his hands over the instrument to play the best blues ever.

Mito o realidad, lo cierto es que Johnson deambula por todo el sur de los Estados Unidos. Las letras de sus canciones alimentaban el misterio, porque trataban sobre desesperación religiosa y demonios interiores. Dos de sus mayores éxitos hacen referencia a su supuesto pacto demoníaco, “Crossroad Blues” y “Me and the Devil Blues”.

Robert Johnson encuentra la muerte a sus 27 años de edad, siendo el miembro fundador del poco apetecido "Club de los 27", expresión utilizada para referirse a un grupo de músicos populares que fallecieron todos a la edad de 27 años, y que incluye entre otros, al multiinstrumentista británico Brian Jones, miembro fundador de The Rolling Stones; el guitarrista afroestadounidense Jimi Hendrix, la vocalista Janis Joplin, conocida por los apodos de "La Dama Blanca del Blues", "La Bruja Cósmica", entre otros, y el carismático vocalista, compositor y poeta estadounidense Jim Morrison, líder de la banda The Doors. A esta lista se les agregarían los casos de Kurt Cobain, y mas recientemente, la británica Amy Winehouse, lo que fortalecería la leyenda urbana de que las muertes de músicos a esta edad son inusualmente comunes.

Coincidencialmente, otro gran músico fallecería un 16 de agosto, pero treinta y nueve años después de la muerte de Robert Johnson. Se trata del llamado "Rey del Rock", Elvis Presley, encontrado muerto en su hogar de Memphis, Tennessee en el año 1977.

Myth or reality, what is certain is that Johnson roams the southern United States. The lyrics of his songs fueled the mystery, because they dealt with religious despair and inner demons. Two of his biggest hits reference his supposed demonic pact, "Crossroad Blues" and "Me and the Devil Blues."

Robert Johnson meets his death at the age of 27, the founding member of the less than desirable "27 Club", an expression used to refer to a group of popular musicians who all died at the age of 27, including, among others, British multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones, a founding member of The Rolling Stones; African-American guitarist Jimi Hendrix, vocalist Janis Joplin, known by the nicknames "The White Lady of the Blues", "The Cosmic Witch", among others, and the charismatic American vocalist, composer and poet Jim Morrison, leader of the band The Doors. To this list would be added the cases of Kurt Cobain, and more recently, the British Amy Winehouse, which would strengthen the urban legend that the deaths of musicians at this age are unusually common.

Coincidentally, another great musician would die on August 16, but thirty-nine years after the death of Robert Johnson. It was the so-called "King of Rock", Elvis Presley, found dead at his home in Memphis, Tennessee in 1977.

Si en vida Robert Johnson fue un completo misterio, en la muerte no podía ser de otra manera. En diversas localidades del estado de Mississippi, existen 3 tumbas que presuntamente guardan los restos mortales del gran músico. Se dice que fue adrede con el fin de "confundir al demonio" y no pudiera tomar posesión de su cuerpo.

If in life Robert Johnson was a complete mystery, in death it could not be otherwise. In various locations in the state of Mississippi, there are 3 tombs that allegedly hold the mortal remains of the great musician. It is said that this was deliberately done in order to "confuse the devil" so that he could not take possession of his body.
