Eating a sandwich with extra "mustache" (ENG/ESP)
A couple of decades ago, I temporarily emigrated to an English-speaking country with the intention of learning the language "in situ" because I consider that, although courses can be good, there is nothing better than facing the challenge of being in a place where you have to speak it.
This, added to the political situation of a country in which the government and the opposition were only dedicated to fighting and not to building, finally motivated me to leave, first to study and with the intention of staying or from there to migrate permanently.
For visa reasons, I decided to register in an academy to take an English course, in which I met people from different places in America, and among us we used to speak in Spanish, until I rebelled and decided to go on my own, because I had gone was to speak English.
However, at lunchtime we went out in groups to eat at the fast food places that were nearby, and among us we helped each other sometimes when we had to make the order, all in English of course.
One day we decided to eat at Subway, the chain of food in which you make the sandwich to your liking, and although in many cases we defended ourselves by pointing out the ingredients, when it came to ordering the dressings, what I said in the title happened. Lol.
I couldn't remember how to say mustard, so I asked one of my classmates how to say it, but he told me it was called mustache, and although it didn't seem appropriate to me, the term was similar, so I decided to ask them to add mustache.
The look of surprise on the face of the person in charge at the end made us all laugh, because she was making mustache signs with her finger and I was showing her the pot of sauce she was wanting.
What did happen is that I never forgot how to say mustard in English again!
Hace ya un par de décadas, emigré temporalmente hacia un país de habla inglesa, con la intención de aprender el idioma "in situ" ya que considero que si bien los cursos pueden resultar buenos, no hay nada mejor que enfrentarse directamente con el reto de estar en un lugar en el que debas obligatoriamente a hablarlo.
Esto, aunado a la situación política de un país en el que gobierno y oposición se dedicaban solo a pelear y no a construir, me terminó de animar a irme, primero a estudiar y con la mira en quedarme o de ahí volver a migrar de forma permanente.
Por el tema del visado, decidí registrarme en una academia para cursar el inglés, en la cual conocí gente de diferentes lugares del América, y entre nosotros solíamos hablar en español, hasta que me rebelé y decidí andar por mi cuenta, pues yo había ido era a hablar inglés.
Sin embargo, en los almuerzos salíamos en grupo a comer en los lugares de comida rápida que habían cerca, y entre nosotros nos ayudábamos a veces cuando debíamos hacer la orden, todo en inglés por supuesto.
Un día decidimos comer en Subway, la cadena de comidas en las que haces el sandwich a tu gusto, y aunque en muchos casos nos defendíamos señalando los ingredientes, al momento de pedir los aderezos, ocurrió justo lo que dije en el título. Lol.
No recordaba como decir mostaza (mustard), así que le pregunté a uno de mis compañeros como decirlo, pero él me dijo que se decía bigote (mustache), y aunque no me resultaba adecuado, el término era similar, por lo que decidí pedir que le agregaran bigote (mustache).
La cara de sorpresa de la encargada al final nos dio risa a todos, pues ella me hacía señas poniendo su dedo como un bigote y yo le mostraba el pote de la salsa que estaba queriendo.
Lo que si pasó es que más nunca olvidé como se dice mostaza en inglés!

That was quite funny and something I can relate to, also having moved to another country and not just because of my facial hair ;^)
Things that are forgivable when you are a student, but still bring a smile to our faces.
Although I have gone through similar ones, for terms that in Spanish have another meaning.
I remember first learning Spanish in Salamanca ( back in 2007 ), after having finished University.
When I learnt the word 'lentejas' I had to laugh and told my profesora: "En holandes, lente = primavera y jas = chaqueta. Temos chaquetas de verano y chaquetas de invierno pero no existen chaquetas de primavera"
