Pepe y yo hemos venido a visitar a un amigo nuestro Cesar, un hombre mayor, calvo y de bigote blanco que vive en una gran casa de dos pisos, de tablas de madera de estilo norteamericano. Aquí los objetos se mueven solos, las cucharas flotan, oímos voces y quejidos horrendos, pero nuestro apacible amigo dice que todo eso no son más que ideas de nuestras mentes inquietas, trucos de nuestra juvenil imaginación, que allí no habitan demonios, fantasmas ni espectros.

Pepe and I have come to visit a friend of ours, Cesar, an older man with a bald head and a white mustache who lives in a large two-story American-style clapboard house. Here the objects move by themselves, the spoons float, we hear voices and horrendous moans, but our peaceful friend says that all this is nothing more than ideas of our restless minds, tricks of our youthful imagination, that there are no demons, ghosts or specters inhabiting it.

Preparo jugo de durazno con frutos que sembramos en nuestro patio y que trajimos a manera de regalo, pero cuando lo sirvo en tasas de cerámica pintadas con florecitas, instantáneamente se pudre. Lo botamos en el lavadero y seguimos conversando un poco de todo con nuestro Cesar, desde nuestro mas reciente recorrido por las selvas del estado Bolívar, allá en Venezuela, en nuestros intento por incursionar en la nueva fiebre del oro latino, hasta un poco de las noticias de política internacional, todo con mucha naturalidad, como si los jarrones Ming no explotaran sin razón al estrellarse de manera inexplicable contra las paredes.

I make peach juice from fruit we planted in our yard and brought as a gift, but when I serve it in flower-painted ceramic cups, it instantly rots. We threw it in the laundry room and continued talking a little about everything with our Cesar, from our most recent tour of the jungles of Bolívar state, back in Venezuela, in our attempts to venture into the new Latin gold rush, to a little of the international political news, all very naturally, as if the Ming vases did not explode for no reason by crashing inexplicably against the walls.

Ha llegado la hora de irnos, nuestro auto, un Volkswagen blanco, se queda atascado en el barro. Llueve a cantaros, el carro no prende. Del patio, entre el barro empiezan a levantarse zombis. Primero salen sus manos verdosas y azules entre el lodo color caca y luego sus cuerpo movidos como por una fuerza de gravedad inversa y lenta. Los cadáveres ayudan al anciano a empujar nuestro auto, este prende y nos alejamos aliviados en principio, pero luego aterrorizados al observar por el retrovisor a nuestro anciano amigo siendo devorado por los zombis gerontofilicos del espacio exterior.

It's time to go, our car, a white Volkswagen, gets stuck in the mud. It's raining a lot, the car won't start. In the backyard, zombies begin to rise from the mud. First their greenish and blue hands emerge from the poo-colored mud and then their bodies moved as if by a slow reverse force of gravity. The corpses help the old man to push our car, it starts and we drive away relieved at first, but then terrified to see our old friend in the rearview mirror being devoured by gerontophilic zombies from outer space.
