Don't tell your problems to people: eighty percent don't care; and the other twenty percent are glad you have them.

About the Quote

This may be true in other nations, but this expression exists in American politics: "If you want a friend, get a dog." The exception to this expression is the spouse or the significant other. Everyone has problems, but what we don't want are other people's problems. We seek ways to solve our problems, and we seek people who can help us solve our problems.

As much as we may care about other people, the fact is we care about ourselves even more. That's only natural, and that's to be expected. People come to us in the hopes that we can solve their problems; they don't expect us to share our problems with them.

In any large enough group of people, there will be people happy to discover that we have problems. While some of these people can't stand the idea of someone living "the perfect life," most of these people delight in schadenfreude, especially against people they despise. We can't do anything about that, so we need to focus on how we can solve our own problems.
