About the Quote
Occasionally we feel vulnerable to whatever the outside world throws at us. We could be experiencing emotional or psychololigcal hurt or trauma. We could be feeling some sort of betrayal. We could be disappointed by those near us.
During these and other vulnerable moments, we tend to behave very defensilvely. We want to be left alone so that we can have time to figure out how to move past that moment. We also want to be left alone so that we don't hurt people near us.
One byproduct of being vulnerable is to lash out at people, both those who wish us harm as well as those truly concerned about our well-being. In the context of a struggle or battle against those who wish to beat us into submission (financial, legal, political, personal, etc.), we have to stand up defiantly if only to make their efforts costly to them. Even if we end up ground to dust, they don't escape untouched. This is when defiance is appropriate.
