About the Quote
The gift, in this case, is talent or ability. We're all born with some quantity or other of talents or abilities. We could have all the talent in the universe, but it doesn't mean a thing if it is untapped, unused-- or, worst of all, buried away.
Once we discoverr we have a talent for something, we need to work at developing it. We all have the ability to draw, but some of us are stuck drawing stick figures because we never developed that drawing ability. On the flip side, someone who was given less drawing talent ends up being a superior artist because that person took advantage of every opportunity to learn how to draw and to perfect that drawing ability.
22 years ago this month the Arizona Diamondbacks faced the New York Yankees in the World Series. The New York Yankees were stacked with so many talented players that some of them would later be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Although the Arizona Diamondbacks had one or two Hall of Fame-caliber players of their own (specifically, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling), the Yankees were considered to be superior by far. Yet it would be the Diamond Backs who would win the 2001 World Series in 7 games on the last play of the game. The Yankees had the edge on talent, but the Diamondbacks had the edge on work ethic.
Some Information about Émile Zola
Émile-Édouard-Charles-Antoine Zola was born in and died in Paris, France. he was born on 1840-April-2. He died on 1902-September-28.
Known more simply as Émile Zola, he was one of the more prominent French novelists of the late 19th Century. He was also a literary critic and a political activist. Apart from his written works, Émile Zola is also famous for the open letter-- {J'accuse}-- he had written defending army captain Alfred Dreyfus, who was accused of treason.
Much of Émile Zola's youth was spent in southern France, in Aix-en-Provence. His father, an Italian immigrant, worked in Aix-en-Provence as a civil engineer involved in the construction of the municipal water system. When he was 7, the elder Zola died. As a result of the untimely demise of his father, Émile Zola and his mother were under serious financial hardship.
As a student in Aix-en-Provence, Émile Zola was a schoolmate of Paul Cézanne, who would go on to become one of the leading painters of his era. Cézanne would join Zola later in life when both lived in Paris. It was Cézanne who introduced Zola to Édouard Manet and the other Impressionist painters of the day.
