If you want to see the true measure of a man, watch how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.

About the Quote

We tend to present the best versions of ourselves to others, especially to our superiors and to our peers. In a professional setting we spend a lot of time with people who have greater standing or greater status. In personal settings, we don't want to look weak or lesser in the presence of family or friends or even casual acquaintances.

However, when it comes to people who are inferior to us-- not as human beings, but rather in terms of position and status-- we tend to let down our guard and let slip more of our true selves.

How many times have we heard of paragons of virtue who turn out to be (to be kind) reprehensible people? How often do we find ourselves dealing with service attendants-- waiters, bank tellers, custodians, etc.-- and behave dismissive toward them? People watch us in these situations, and they confirm for themselves either how genuine we are or how hypocritical we are. Additionally, today the waiter is that person, but tomorrow the waiter could be any of us.

We all have our situations and challenges, including those at the moment who are in positions inferior to us. Just as we want to be treated with dignity and respect, so do they.

Some Information about J. K. Rowling

Joanne Kathleen Rowling was born in Yate, England, UK on 1965-July-31.

J. K. Rowling is an author and writer. She is best known as the creator of the universally popular Harry Potter series of novels. These novels have been made into motion pictures, and they have inspired stage plays and amusement rides.

J. K. Rowling graduated from the University of Exeter in 1986. After graduation, she went to work for the human rights organization Amnesty International in London, England, UK. It was during this period when she began writing content for what would later be the Harry Potter novels.

In the 1990s Rowling went to Portugal to teach English as a second language. Before returning to the UK she was married briefly and became mother to a daughter. On returning to the UK she settled down in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. During her early years in Edinburgh she worked as a French teacher. Work wasn't steady, so between teaching jobs she lived on public assistance. Throughout all this time-- going back to 1986-- she kept writing and developing Harry Potter.

1997 was the breakthrough year when the first novel was published: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (which was published elsewhere as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone). At the suggestion of her publisher, she was encouraged to use a gender-neutral name. This is why, from the publication of this first novel, she chose to be known by her initials.
