About the Quote

Johan Cruyff was speaking specifically about players who question playing for FC Barcelona. However, this quote can be applied outside the futbol context to any unit or organization.

We want for our units-- corporations, franchises, clans, sports teams, schools, armed forces, nations, etc.-- people who are totally committed to us at the unit level. We want people who totally buy in to what our unit holds dear. We want people who are all-in.

Why do we want people who are whole-heartedly on our side? They tend to be go-getters and self-starters. They require minimal to zero supervision. We don't need to waste time, effort, and energy in trying to get them to what what needs to be done.

To some degree, it even boils down to a question of loyalty and honor. Once a person has second thought about being associated with the unit, the honorable thing to do would be to cut ties when relations are still amicable and damage has not occurred. Once harm happens and hurts the unit, it gets worse from there for everyone.
