About the Quote

It's OK for us to be selfish in pursuit of our interests and goals. What is not OK is to step all over people along the way. Stabbing people in the back is not something we should be doing as we climb the ladder of success or climb the peak.

Even if we're self-centered people who don't care about anyone else, stabbing people in the back cannot be part of our behavior for one simple reason: We don't want other people stabbing us in the back. It's a most distasteful experience for us, and the trauma we suffer from such experiences can't be calculated. If we don't want to be on the receiving end of that sort of behavior, it's a good bet that other people don't want to be on the receiving end of that behavior, either.

If we do wrong to others as we're in the process of realizing our dreams and goals, a good situation ends up turning into one filled with strife and conflict going forward. Then if we end up needing help we may find ourselves denied the help we need. Stabbing people in the back is never a good idea.

Some (More) Information about Martha Stewart

When Martha Stewart sold 4,000 shares of ImClone systems stock in December 2001, it was the beginning of an unpleasant chapter in her life. Her stock sale took place one day before the public would learn of news which woulkd cause the price to drop. ImClone Systems was a biomedial firm owned by Samuel Waksal. Since he was a friend of the Stewarts and the timing was suspect, this caught the attention of the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, future FBI director James Comey. Due to this combination of factors, Martha Stewart was accused of insider trading.

In 2003 she stepped down as CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. In order to focus on defending herself against charges of lying or obstructing justice, she took the role of Chief Creative Officer. In 2004 she was found guilty, at which time she retained a strictly editorial connection with MSLO. Martha Stewart was sentenced to 5 months in prison followed by 5 months of house arrest. During this time she urged her fans and supporters to continue to support her businesses and enterprises.

After paying her debt to society, Martha Stewart returned to television as the host of the program Martha (2005-2012). She was able to rejoin the board of MSLO in 2006 when the SEC-imposed ban on her ended. In 2012 she was allowed to resume her duties as Chair of the Board.
