About the Quote

Never underestimate the power which association has on us. It's been said that we are the product of the 5 people around whom we spend the most time. In the case of people who tend to be by themselves a lot (such as traveling sales representatives or long-haul truckers), that association can take the form of the (paper or audio) books we read (or listen to) (such as those from people such as Mary Kay Ash, Napoleon Hill, Zig Ziglar, Dale Carnegie, and Jim Rohn).

Closely related to association is this principle from computer science: Garbage in, Garbage out. If we associate with people of good character, we have a great chance of becoming people of great character ourselves. If we associate with negative influences, then there if a great chance that we regress as people.

When we are starting out as adults done with higher education, the choice of people we have around us is crucial. We want to be around people who can help bring the best out of us. We want to be around people who are where we want to be in the future. We want to be around people who are postivie influences in our lives. We even need enemies who end up making us raise our game to a higher level. This is the power of association.

Some (More) Information about Martha Stewart

During the 1980s, Martha Stewart published 2 books which were representative of what she had to offer: Martha Stewart’s {Hors d’Oeuvres} in 1984 and Weddings in 1987. In 1990, Martha Steward joined forces with Time Publishing Ventures, Inc. to publish her signature monthly magazine, Martha Stewart Living. She was both editor-in-chief of MSL as well as its featured personality.

From 1003 through 2004 she hosted a syndicated television program also titled Martha Stewart Living. MSL was so successful that she purchased the magazine from owner Time Warner, Inc. This purchase was made possible thanks to her merchandising deals with retail chain Kmart, which sold the Martha Stewart Everyday line of household merchandise for the home. Proceeds from the sales she earned under this arrangement were used to buy MSL from Time Warner, Inc.

Martha Stewart wanted to create a multimedia and marketing firm, and she realized this dream in 1999 when Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Thanks to MSLO going public and being listed on the NYSE, Martha Stewart was briefly a USD billionaire. At MSLO, she would be both Chairwoman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. However, it would be at least another decade before MSLO would turn a profit, and that was at the start of the 2008 financial crisis leading to the Great Recession.
