About the Quote

No matter what happens to us, we will be presented with the choice to love or to hate, to hate or to love. There may be reasons where the choice is made to hate: marital infidelity; watching loved ones killed; abuse by the legal system leading to wrongful inprisonment; etc. There may come satisfaction from the feeling that the hate provides; however, that satisfaction is short-term, and in the long-term it will lead to physiological harm, mental damage, and even loss of one's soul.

Even in those situations, choosing to love may be the better decision. It allows one to face the situation head on first in order to acknowledge that it hapepned, and then to put it behind and move forward in life. There won't be any affection of physical gestures such as hugs or kisses, but it would be the total opposite of "man's inhumanity to man" which tends to be the more common reaction.

Choosing to hate leads to such a single-minded obsession that it sucks up all energies and efforts just to feed that hate-- and then, at the end, there is nothing to show for that hate. However, choosing to love also happens to be the beginning of the self-healing process we need so that we no longer harm ourselves from dishing out to or receiving hate from others.

Some Information about Johnny Cash

John R. Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas, US on 1932-February-26. He died in Nashville, Tennessee, US on 2003-September-12.

Johnny Cash was a singer and songwriter whose works expanded the scope of country & western music in the United States. Many of his songs also crossed over into other genres such as blues and rock-n-roll. Partly because of his persona as a rebel, Johnny Cash usually wore black clothing, which is why he is also known to many people as "The Man in Black" (just not to be confused with membership in the "government organization" known as The Men in Black).

Like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash had been exposed to lusic styles such as folk ballads, religious hymns, and laborer's laments. Also like Elvis Presley, he served in the military in Germany; during this period in the 1950s, Johnny Cash began writing songs and also learned how to play the guitar. When he fulfilled his military service obligations, Cash settled in Memphis, Tennessee, US to begin his musical career.

Cash began his professional singing career by performing with the Tennessee Two (which later became the Tennessee Three). Besides singing with this duo/trio, he also performed at county fairs as well as local events. This extra work led to an opportunity for Cash to audition for Sam Phillips of the legendary music label Sun Records. Phillips signed Cash in 1955 to a contract with Sun Records.
